﴿۞ كُلُّ الطَّعَامِ كَانَ حِلًّا لِّبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ إِلَّا مَا حَرَّمَ إِسْرَائِيلُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن تُنَزَّلَ التَّوْرَاةُ ۗ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِالتَّوْرَاةِ فَاتْلُوهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ﴾

بنی اسرائیل کے لیے (تورات کے نازل ہونے سے) پہلے کھانے کی تمام چیزیں حلال تھیں بجز ان کے جو یعقوب نے خود اپنے اوپر حرام کر لی تھیں کہہ دو کہ اگر سچے ہو تو تورات لاؤ اور اسے پڑھو (یعنی دلیل پیش کرو)

(1) یہ اور مابعد کی دو آیتیں یہود کے اس اعتراض پر نازل ہوئیں کہ انہوں نے نبی کریم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) سے کہا کہ آپ (صلى الله عليه وسلم) دین ابراہیمی کے پیروکار ہونے کا دعویٰ کرتے ہیں اور اونٹ کا گوشت بھی کھاتے ہیں جب کہ اونٹ کا گوشت اور اس کا دودھ دین ابراہیمی میں حرام تھا۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا یہود کا دعویٰ غلط ہے۔ حضرت ابراہیم (عليه السلام) کے دین میں یہ چیزیں حرام نہیں تھیں۔ ہاں البتہ بعض چیزیں اسرائیل (حضرت یعقوب (عليه السلام) ) نے خود اپنے اوپر حرام کر لی تھیں اور وہ یہی اونٹ کا گوشت اور اس کا دودھ تھا (اس کی ایک وجہ نذر یا بیماری تھی) اور حضرت یعقوب (عليه السلام) کا یہ فعل بھی نزول تورات سے پہلے کا ہے، اس لئے کہ تورات تو حضرت ابراہیم (عليه السلام) وحضرت یعقوب (عليه السلام) کے بہت بعد نازل ہوئی ہے۔ پھر تم کس طرح مذکورہ دعویٰ کر سکتے ہو؟ علاوہ ازیں تورات میں بعض چیزیں تم (یہودیوں) پر تمہارے ظلم اور سرکشی کی وجہ سے حرام کی گئی تھیں۔ (سورة الأنعام: 46، النساء: 160) اگر تمہیں یقین نہیں تو تورات لاؤ اور اسے پڑھ کر سناؤ جس سے یہ بات واضح ہو جائے گی کہ حضرت ابراہیم (عليه السلام) کے زمانے میں یہ چیزیں حرام نہیں تھیں اور تم پر بھی بعض چیزیں حرام کی گئیں تو اس کی وجہ تمہاری ظلم وزیادتی تھی یعنی ان کی حرمت بطور سزا تھی۔ (أيسر التفاسير)

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(3:93) All food (that is lawful in the Law revealed to Muhammad) was lawful to the Children of Israel, *76 except what Israel *77 made unlawful to themselves before the revelation of the Torah. Tell them: 'Bring the Torah and recite any passage of it if you are truthful.'

When the Jewish rabbis found no grounds for criticizing the fundamental teachings of the Prophet (there was no difference between the teachings of the previous Prophets and that of the Arabian Prophet on matters which constitute the core of religion), they raised objections about the details of religious law. The first objection was that the Prophet (peace be on him) had declared lawful a number of things which had been reckoned as unlawful since the time of the ancient Prophets. What is said here is a refutation of that objection.

If 'Israel' is taken to mean the 'Children of Israel' then the interpretation of this verse must be that before the revelation of the Torah they treated a number of things as prohibited on the grounds of custom and usage alone. If, however, 'Israel' signifies Jacob (Ya'qub) then, the meaning is that he avoided the use of certain foods, which his descendants wrongly understood to be religiously prohibited, as a result of either a temperamental dislike or an ailment. This latter version is more commonly accepted. It becomes clear from the next verse that the Biblical injunction regarding the prohibition of the flesh of camels and rabbits was not part of the original Torah but an interpolation by Jewish doctors. All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muhammad], "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."
