Verse 118 from surah Al-Baqarah

﴿وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ لَوْلَا يُكَلِّمُنَا اللَّهُ أَوْ تَأْتِينَا آيَةٌ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّثْلَ قَوْلِهِمْ ۘ تَشَابَهَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ قَدْ بَيَّنَّا الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ﴾
[ البقرة: 118]

Ayat With Urdu Translation

اور جو لوگ (کچھ) نہیں جانتے (یعنی مشرک) وہ کہتے ہیں کہ خدا ہم سے کلام کیوں نہیں کرتا۔ یا ہمارے پاس کوئی نشانی کیوں نہیں آتی۔ اسی طرح جو لوگ ان سے پہلے تھے، وہ بھی انہی کی سی باتیں کیا کرتے تھے۔ ان لوگوں کے دل آپس میں ملتے جلتے ہیں۔ جو لوگ صاحبِ یقین ہیں، ان کے (سمجھانے کے) لیے نشانیاں بیان کردی ہیں

Surah Al-Baqarah Full Urdu

(1) اس سے مراد مشرکین عرب ہیں جنہوں نے یہودیوں کی طرح مطالبہ کیا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ ہم سے براہ راست گفتگو کیوں نہیں کرتا، یا کوئی بڑی نشانی کیوں نہیں دکھا دیتا؟ جسے دیکھ کر ہم مسلمان ہوجائیں جس طرح کہ سورۂ بنی اسرائیل (آیت 90 تا 93) میں اور دیگر مقامات پر بھی بیان کیا گیا ہے۔
(2) یعنی مشرکین عرب کے دل، کفروعناد اور انکار وسرکشی میں اپنے ماقبل کے لوگوں کے دلوں کے مشابہ ہوگئے۔ جیسے سورۂ ذاریات میں فرمایا گیا : «كَذَلِكَ مَا أَتَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلا قَالُوا سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ، أَتَوَاصَوْا بِهِ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ»۔ ”ان سے پہلے جو بھی رسول آیا، اس کو لوگوں نے جادوگر یا دیوانہ ہی کہا۔ کیا یہ اس بات کی ایک دوسرے کوو صیت کرجاتے تھے؟ نہیں یہ سب سرکش لوگ ہیں۔“ یعنی قدر مشترک ان سب میں سرکشی کا جذبہ ہے، اس لئے داعیان حق کے سامنے نئے نئے مطالبے رکھتے ہیں، یا انہیں دیوانہ گردانتے ہیں۔

نادان کہتے ہیں کہ اللہ خود ہم سے بات کیوں نہیں کرتا یا کوئی نشانی ہمارے پاس کیوں نہیں آتی؟ ایسی ہی باتیں اِن سے پہلے لوگ بھی کیا کرتے تھے اِن سب (اگلے پچھلے گمراہوں) کی ذہنیتیں ایک جیسی ہیں یقین لانے والوں کے لیے تو ہم نشانیاں صاف صاف نمایاں کر چکے ہیں

(2:118) The ignorant people say, "Why does not Allah Himself talk to us or why does not a Sign come to us?" *117 The people before them also talked like this, for all (who swerve from the Right Path) have the same mentality. *118 We have already shown clear Signs to those who believe; *119

Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to meaning

What they meant was that God should either appear before them Himself, tell them plainly that the Qur'an was a revelation from Him, and proclaim His injunctions, or cause them to see some extraordinary sign that would convince them that whatever Muhammad (peace be on him) told them was from Him.

The fact is that the misguided people of the time of the revelation of the Qur'an did not raise any objection or make any demands essentially different from those of the misguided people of the past. From the remote past till today, error and misguidedness seem to have the same character, so the same doubts and objections are repeated over and over again.
*119). The demand that God should speak to them directly was too absurd even to be answered. The question dealt with here concerns the demand for a sign that would convince them of the Truth. In response to this it is pointed out that many signs do exist, but all such signs are of profit only to those who are inclined to believe. As for those who are bent on disbelief, what sign can be shown to them, and to what avail?

Waqala allatheena la yaAAlamoona lawla yukallimuna Allahu aw tateena ayatun kathalika qala allatheena min qablihim mithla qawlihim tashabahat quloobuhum qad bayyanna alayati liqawmin yooqinoona

English - Sahih International

Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith].

और जो (मुशरेकीन) कुछ नहीं जानते कहते हैं कि खुदा हमसे (खुद) कलाम क्यों नहीं करता, या हमारे पास (खुद) कोई निशानी क्यों नहीं आती, इसी तरह उन्हीं की सी बाते वह कर चुके हैं जो उनसे पहले थे उन सब के दिल आपस में मिलते जुलते हैं जो लोग यक़ीन रखते हैं उनको तो अपनी निशानियाँ क्यों साफतौर पर दिखा चुके

যারা কিছু জানে না, তারা বলে, আল্লাহ আমাদের সঙ্গে কেন কথা বলেন না? অথবা আমাদের কাছে কোন নিদর্শন কেন আসে না? এমনি ভাবে তাদের পূর্বে যারা ছিল তারাও তাদেরই অনুরূপ কথা বলেছে। তাদের অন্তর একই রকম। নিশ্চয় আমি উজ্জ্বল নিদর্শনসমূহ বর্ণনা করেছি তাদের জন্যে যারা প্রত্যয়শীল।
