23:67 In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil.

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

You did that displaying arrogance over the people, because you thought you were the people of the sanctuary while you were not; the true people of the sanctuary are the Mindful.
You also talked ill of it by night and would not deem it sacred.


Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

In pride (they Quraish pagans and polytheists of Makkah used to feel proud that they are the dwellers of Makkah sanctuary Haram), talking evil about it (the Quran) by night.
