﴿وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا يَأْتِينَا بِآيَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ ۚ أَوَلَمْ تَأْتِهِم بَيِّنَةُ مَا فِي الصُّحُفِ الْأُولَىٰ﴾
[ طه: 133]

20:133 And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

These disbelievers who reject the Prophet ( peace be upon him ) said: “Why does Muhammad not bring us a sign from his Lord which proves his truthfulness and that he is a Messenger?” Has the Qur’ān which confirms the previous divine books not come to these rejecters?

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

They say: "Why does he not bring us a sign (proof) from his Lord?" Has there not come to them the proof of that which is (written) in the former papers [Scriptures, i.e. the Taurat (Torah), and the Injeel (Gospel), etc. about the coming of the Prophet Muhammad SAW].

*116) This means that the Qur'an itself is a great miracle, for though it is being presented by an unlettered person from among them, it contains the essence of the teachings and guidance of all tire previous Divine Books. Not only this: it makes those teachings and guidance so plain and clear that even a simple man of the desert can benefit from them.
