﴿إِنَّمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَوْثَانًا وَتَخْلُقُونَ إِفْكًا ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ لَكُمْ رِزْقًا فَابْتَغُوا عِندَ اللَّهِ الرِّزْقَ وَاعْبُدُوهُ وَاشْكُرُوا لَهُ ۖ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ﴾
[ العنكبوت: 17]

29:17 You only worship, besides Allah, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allah do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allah provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."

What you worship besides God that is other than Him are only graven images and you fabricate a calumny you speak lies such as ‘These graven images are God’s partners’. Truly those whom you worship besides God have no power to provide for you. So seek your provision from God request it from Him and worship Him and be thankful to Him; to Him you shall be returned.


Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim


Those you worship besides Allah, he added, are simply idols and this way you are indeed creating falsehood and discord. Those you worship besides Allah do not have the power to provide for you livelihood, therefore betake yourselves to Providence seeking His bounty for your livelihood and worship Him and impel to yourselves to the feeling of gratitude and gratefulness to Him and do realize that to Him shall all of you return

Quran 29:17 Tafsir Ibn Kathir


Ibrahim's preaching to His People Allah tells us how His servant, Messenger and close friend Ibrahim, the Imam of the monotheists, called his people to worship Allah alone, with no partner or associate, to fear Him alone, to seek provision from Him alone, with no partner or associate, to give thanks to Him alone, for He is the One to Whom thanks should be given for the blessings which none can bestow but He.
Ibrahim said to his people: اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ وَاتَّقُوهُ ( Worship Allah, and have Taqwa of Him, ) meaning worship Him and fear Him Alone, with all sincerity. ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ( that is better for you if you know. ) if you do that you will attain good in this world and the next, and you will prevent evil from yourselves in this world and the Hereafter.
Then Allah states that the idols which they worshipped were not able to do any harm or any good, and tells them, "You made up names for them and called them gods, but they are created beings just like you." This interpretation was reported by Al-`Awfi from Ibn `Abbas.
It was also the view of Mujahid and As-Suddi.
Al-Walibi reported from Ibn `Abbas: "You invent falsehood, means, you carve idols," which do not have the power to provide for you. فَابْتَغُواْ عِندَ اللَّهِ الرِّزْقَ ( so seek from Allah your provision, ) This emphasizes the idea of asking Allah Alone.
This is like the Ayat: إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ( You (Alone ) we worship, and You ( Alone ) we ask for help.) ( 1:5 ) And His saying: رَبِّ ابْنِ لِى عِندَكَ بَيْتاً فِى الْجَنَّةِ ( My Lord! Build for me, with You, a home in Paradise ) ( 66:11 ).
Allah says here: فَابْتَغُواْ ( so seek ) meaning, ask for عِندَ اللَّهِ الرِّزْقَ ( from Allah your provision, ) meaning, do not seek it from anyone or anything other than Him, for no one else possesses the power to do anything. وَاعْبُدُوهُ وَاشْكُرُواْ لَهُ ( and worship Him, and be grateful to Him. ) Eat from what He has provided and worship Him Alone, and give thanks to Him for the blessings He has given you. إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ( To Him you will be brought back. ) means, on the Day of Resurrection, when He will reward or punish each person according to his deeds.
His saying: وَإِن تُكَذِّبُواْ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أُمَمٌ مِّن قَبْلِكُمْ ( And if you deny, then nations before you have denied. ) means, `you have heard what happened to them by way of punishment for opposing the Messengers.' وَمَا عَلَى الرَّسُولِ إِلاَّ الْبَلَـغُ الْمُبِينُ ( And the duty of the Messenger is only to convey plainly. ) All the Messengers have to do is to convey the Message as Allah has commanded them.
Allah guides whoever He wills and leaves astray whoever He wills, so strive to be among the blessed.
Qatadah said concerning the Ayah: وَإِن تُكَذِّبُواْ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أُمَمٌ مِّن قَبْلِكُمْ ( And if you deny, then nations before you have denied. ) "These are words of consolation to His Prophet, peace be upon him." This suggestion by Qatadah implies that the narrative ( about Ibrahim ) is interrupted here, and resumes with the words "And nothing was the answer of ( Ibrahim's ) people..." in Ayah 24.
This was also stated by Ibn Jarir.
From the context it appears that Ibrahim, peace be upon him, said all of what is in this section.
Here he establishes proof against them that the Resurrection will indeed come to pass, because at the end of this passage it says: فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِ ( "And nothing was the answer of his people..." )( 29:24 ) And Allah knows best.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(29:17) Those that you worship instead of Allah are merely idols, and you are simply inventing lies (about them). *28 Indeed those whom you worship beside Allah have no power to provide you with any sustenance. So seek your sustenance from Allah and serve only Him and give thanks to Him alone. It is to Him that you will be sent back. *29

You only worship, besides Allah, idols, and meaning

*28) That is, " You are not forging idols but a lie.
These idols are in themselves a lie.
Then your beliefs that they are gods and goddesses, or they are incarnation of God, or His offspring, or His favourites, or intercessors with Him, ur that someone of them is bestower of health, or giver of children or jobs, are aII lies, which you have invented from your own whims and conjecture.
The fact is that they are in no way more than idols-lifeless, powerless and impotent.

*29) In these few sentences the Prophet Abraham has put together aII rational arguments against idol-worship.
There must necessarily be some reason for making somebody or something a deity.
One such reason can be that somebody should be entitled to being a deity due to some personal excelle nce.
Another, that he should be the creator of man, and man should be indebted to him for tiffs existence.
Third, that he should be responsible for man's sustenance, his food and other means of life.
Fourth, that man's future should be linked up with his support and bounty, and man may be afraid that annoying him would mean bringing about his own ruin.
The Prophet Abraham said that none of these four things favoured idol-worship, but they all favoured and demanded pure God-worship.
Saying that they are mere idols, he demolished the first argument, for a mere idol could have no excellence to entitle it to be a deity.
Then, by saying that "
You are their creator" , be refuted the second argument, and "they have no power to give you any sustenance" destroyed the third reason.
Lastly.
he said, "
You have to return to Allah ultimately" and not to the idols; therefore, it was not in their power to make or mar your destiny, but in the power of God alone.
Thus, after a complete refutation of shirk, the Prophet Abraham made it clear to them that all the reasons for which man could regard somebody as a deity only applied to Allah, Who alone should be worshipped without associating anyone else with him.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs


( Ye serve instead of Allah only idols ) stones, ( and ye only invent a lie ) carving with your own hand what you worship beside Allah. ( Lo! those whom ye serve instead of Allah ) of idols ( own no provision for you ) they are unable to provide your sustenance. ( So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him ) declare His divine Oneness, ( and give thanks unto Him ) through the profession of Allah’s divine Oneness, ( (for ) unto Him ye will be brought back) after death and He will reward each according to his works.
