Quran 8:26 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land the land of Mecca and were fearful lest men should snatch you away lest the disbelievers should seize you swiftly; how He gave you refuge in Medina and reinforced you strengthened you with His help on the day of Badr with the angels and provided you with the good things the spoils that you might be thankful for His graces.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Remember, you were some few viewed with contempt, living in fear of persecution, abduction and exile, and Allah put you under His tutelage, gave you shelter and made you strong in influence and authority and gave you security of position and reinforced you by His additional support and made victory sit on your helm. He provided you with victuals of the various good and wholesome kinds hoping you would impel yourselves to gratitude and gratefulness
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(8:26) And recall when you were few in numbers and deemed weak in the land, fearful lest people do away with you. Then He provided you refuge, strengthened you with His help, and provided you sustenance with good things that you may be grateful. *21
And remember when you were few and meaning
*21).
The reference to gratefulness in the verse is worthy of reflection.
Bearing in mind the subject under discussion, it appears that gratefulness does not simply mean that Muslims should acknowledge God's favour to them insofar as He rescued them from their state of abject weakness.
God had not only salvaged them from an insecure life in Makka and provided them with a haven of security in Madina where they enjoyed an abundance of livelihood.
Gratefulness does not simply require all that.
Apart from acknowledging God's favour, gratefulness also demands that Muslims should faithfully obey God and His Messenger out of a consciousness of God's munificence, out of loyalty and devotion to the Prophet's mission, and should cast aside all dangers, hardships and misfortunes that might confront them.
In their struggle for God's cause Muslims should have complete trust in God Who has helped them on earlier occasions and Who has delivered them from dangers.
The Muslims should also have faith that if they work sincerely in God's cause He will certainly help and protect them.
Hence, the gratefulness expected of the Muslims does not simply consist of a verbal acknowledgement of God's benefaction.
Gratefulness to God should manifest itself in actual deeds as well.
If someone were to acknowledge the favour of his Lord, and yet is slack in seeking His good pleasure, lacks sincerity in serving Him, and entertains doubts that God's benefaction will continue in the future, then that can hardly be characterized as gratitude.
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( And remember ) O group of Emigrants, ( when ye were few ) in number ( and reckoned feeble ) oppressed ( in the land ) the land of Mecca, ( and were in fear lest men should extirpate you ) you feared that the people of Mecca would expel or imprison you, ( how He gave you refuge ) in Medina, ( and strengthened you with His help ) i.e. He assisted and gave you strength when He made you victorious on the Day of Badr, ( and made provision of good things ) the spoils of war ( for you, that haply ye might be thankful ) in order that you give thanks for His bounty: victory and the spoils of war on the Day of Badr.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.
