English - Sahih International

18:29 And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place.

Quran 18:29 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And say to him and to his companions that this Qur’ān is ‘The truth that comes from your Lord; so whoever will let him believe and whoever will let him disbelieve’ — this is meant as a threat to them. Indeed We have prepared for the wrongdoers that is the disbelievers a Fire and they will be surrounded by its pavilion by that which encloses the Fire itself. If they cry out for help they will be succoured with water like molten copper like thick burning oil which scalds faces because of the intensity of its heat if it is brought near them. What an evil drink that is and how ill is the Fire as a resting-place! murtafaqan is a specification derived from the agent of the verb in other words vile is the person choosing to rest thereon; and this is in contrast to what He will say next about Paradise How fair a resting-place below verse 31. For indeed what resting-place can there be in the Fire?

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

And say to them: Allahs truth has come to guide us into all truth and he who wishes to acknowledge it with judgement and choice is free to do so and he who wishes to reject it is free to do so. We have prepared for the wrongful of actions a fire whose scorching and merciless flames beset them on all sides as if it were a bed having an arched canopy and covered sides. As often as they cry for help they are given a draught of boiling water like molten brass or molten lead scalding the faces; evil indeed is the drink and evil is the society

Quran 18:29 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

The Truth is from Allah, and the Punishment of Those Who do not believe in it Allah says to His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ: "Say to the people, `What I have brought to you from your Lord is the truth, in which there is no confusion or doubt."' فَمَن شَآءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَآءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ ( Then whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. ) This is a type of threat and stern warning, after which Allah says, إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا ( Verily, We have prepared ), meaning made ready, لِّلظَّـلِمِينَ ( for the wrongdoers, ) meaning those who disbelieve in Allah, His Messenger and His Book, نَارًا أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَا ( a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them. ) Ibn Jurayj said that Ibn `Abbas said, أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَا ( a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them. ) "A wall of fire." وَإِن يَسْتَغِيثُواْ يُغَاثُواْ بِمَآءٍ كَالْمُهْلِ يَشْوِى الْوجُوهَ ( And if they ask for drink, they will be granted water like Al-Muhl, that will scald their faces. ) Ibn `Abbas said; "Al-Muhl is thick water which is similar to the sediment in oil." Mujahid said, "It is like blood and pus." `Ikrimah said, "It is the thing that is heated to the ultimate temperature." Others said: "It is everything that is melted." Qatadah said, "Ibn Mas`ud melted some gold in a grove, and when it became liquid and foam rose to the top, he said, this is the thing that is most like Al-Muhl." Ad-Dahhak said: "The water of Hell is black, and it itself is black and its people are black." There is nothing contradictory in these comments, for Al-Muhl includes all of these unpleasant characteristics, it is black, evil-smelling, thick and hot, as Allah said, يَشْوِى الْوجُوهَ ( it will scald their faces. ) meaning because of its heat.
When the disbeliever wants to drink it and brings it close to his face, it will scald it so that the skin of his face falls off into it.
Sa`id bin Jubayr said, "When the people of Hell get hungry, they will ask for relief from it, and they will be given the tree of Zaqqum from which they will eat.
The tree will tear off the skin of their faces, and if anyone who knew them were to pass by, he would recognize the skin of their faces in the tree.
Then they will feel thirsty, so they will ask for drink, and they will be granted water like Al-Muhl, that is what has been heated to the ultimate temperature.
When it is brought near their mouths, the flesh of their faces from which the skin has been torn off will be baked." After describing this drink in these horrifying qualities, Allah says: بِئْسَ الشَّرَابُ ( Terrible is the drink, ) meaning, how awful this drink is.
Similarly, He says in another Ayah: وَسُقُواْ مَآءً حَمِيماً فَقَطَّعَ أَمْعَآءَهُمْ ( and be given to drink boiling water so that it cuts up their bowels. ) 47:15 تُسْقَى مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ ( They will be given to drink from a boiling spring. ) 88:5 وَبَيْنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٍ ( They will go between it (Hell ) and the fierce boiling water.) 55:44 وَسَآءَتْ مُرْتَفَقًا ( and an evil Murtafaq! ) means, how evil a place is the Fire to dwell and rest and gather.
As Allah says elsewhere: إِنَّهَا سَآءَتْ مُسْتَقَرّاً وَمُقَاماً ( Evil indeed it (Hell ) is as an abode and as a place to rest in.) 25:66

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(18:29) Proclaim, "This is the Truth from your Lord: now whosoever will, he may accept it and whosoever will, he may reject it".  *31 (As for those who reject this,) We have prepared for such workers of iniquity a fire whose flames have encircled them.  *32 If they will ask for water there, they will be treated with such a drink as will have its residue like that of oil  *33 and burn their lips: what an evil drink and what an evil abode!

And say, "The truth is from your meaning

*31) This verse makes it quite plain that the story of the Sleepers of the Cave has been related to tell the opponents of Islam: " This is the Truth from your Lord: now whosoever wills, he may accept it and whosoever wills, he may reject it.
But people must understand that no compromise will be made in regard to the Truth just as the Sleepers of the Cave did not make any compromise with regard to their creed.
They did not make any compromise in regard to the Doctrine of Tauhid after they had believed in it and categorically declared, "
Our Lord is the One Who alone is the Lord of the heavens and the earth." After this declaration they did not in any way accede to the making of any compromise with their people, who had gone astray, but firmly declared, "We will not give Him up and pray to other deities, because it will be the most improper thing, if we do so." After making this declaration they left their people and deities and took refuge in the Cave without taking any provisions with them.
After' this when they rose up, the only thing about which they showed any anxiety, was that their people might not succeed in forcing them back to their own faith.
After relating these things, the Qur'an addresses the Holy Prophet to the effect ( though these words are really meant for the opponents of Islam ): "
It is absolutely out of question whether any compromise can be made with mushriks and disbelievers.
present the truth intact to them whether they accept it or not.
If they do not accept it, they themselves will meet with an evil end.
As regards those, who have accepted the Truth ( whether they be youngsters or poor, indigent people or slaves or labourers, ) they are really those people who have a worth with Allah, and they alone will be honoured.
Therefore you should not discard them and prefer the chiefs and the rich people who may be neglectful of Allah and be slaves of their lust, even though they might be possessors of worldly grandeur.
"
*32) The Arabic word ~l~ir' ( Suradiq ) literally means sides of a tent but, as used in the case of Hell, it may mean its external boundaries to which its flames and heat may reach.
According to some commentators, it applies to the future reuse " ....
its flames will encircle them "
so as to refer to the flames of Hell in the Hereafter.
But we are of the opinion that its flames have already encircled, in this very world, these workers of iniquity, who have turned away from the Truth and that they cannot escape them.
*33) The Arabic word ,}~ ( muhl ) has several lexical meanings.
According to some people, it means " the residue of oil "; according to others, " lava ", which is formed by the melting of things in the earth; according to some, " molten matter " and according to others " pus and blood "

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( Say ) to ’Uyaynah: ( (It is ) the Truth) there is no deity except Allah ( from the Lord of you (all ). Then whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve) this is a threat from Allah; it is also said that this means: for whomever Allah wants faith, he will believe; and for whomever He does not want faith, he will not believe. ( Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers ) for ’Uyaynah and his host ( Fire. Its tent encloseth them ) the extent of the Fire surrounds them. ( If they ask for showers ) if they ask for water to drink, ( they will be showered with water like molten lead ) like boiling oil or hot liquid silver ( which burneth the faces. Calamitous the drink and ill the resting place! ) evil is their dwelling; He says: evil is the abode of their companions: the satans and the disbelievers.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And say: "The truth is from your Lord." Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them (disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). And if they ask for help (relief, water, etc.) they will be granted water like boiling oil, that will scald their faces. Terrible the drink, and an evil Murtafaqa (dwelling, resting place, etc.)!
