Quran 71:4 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
that He may forgive you some of your sins min dhunūbikum ‘some of your sins’ min may be taken as extra because submission to God islām expunges everything of sin that was committed previous to it; or it min may be understood as partitive to point out that which is due to those who were already God’s servants and defer you without chastising you until an appointed term the term for death. Indeed when God’s term for your chastisement — should you not believe — comes it cannot be deferred if only you knew’ this you would believe.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
He forgives you your iniquities, extends your period of duration, and He cancels your misfortunes and your punishment, for when Allahs fixed date for punishment is due, it shall not be postponed ever, if only you knew

Nuh's Invitation to His People
Allah says concerning Nuh that He sent him to his people commanding him to warn them of the punishment of Allah before it befell them.
He was to tell them that if they would repent and turn to Allah, then the punishment would be lifted from them.
Due to this Allah says,
( "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment." He said: "O my people! Verily, I am a plain warner to you." ) meaning, clarity of the warning, making the matter apparent and clear.
( That you should worship Allah, and have Taqwa of Him, ) meaning, `abandon those things that He has forbidden and avoid that which He has declared to be sinful.'
( and obey me, ) `In that which I command you to do and that which I forbid you from.'
( He will forgive you of your sins ) meaning, `if you do what I command you to do and you believe in what I have been sent with to you, then Allah will forgive you for your sins.
'
( and respite you to an appointed term. ) meaning, `He will extend your life span and protect you from the torment that He would have made befall you if you did not stay away from His prohibitions.' This Ayah is used as proof by those who say that obedience ( to Allah ), righteousness and maintaining the family ties truly increase the life span of a person.
This is like that which has been reported in the Hadith,
«صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ تَزِيدُ فِي الْعُمُر»
( Maintaining the family ties increases the life span. ) Concerning Allah's statement,
( Verily, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but know. ) means, hasten to the obedience ( of Allah ) before the coming of His vengeance.
For verily, if He commands that to happen, it cannot be repulsed or prevented.
For He is the Great One Who compels everything, and He is the Almighty Whose might all of creation succumbs to.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(71:4) He will forgive your sins *3 and will grant you respite until an appointed term. *4 Indeed when Allah's appointed term comes, it cannot be deferred; *5 if you only knew!' *6
Allah will forgive you of your sins meaning
*3) The sentence yaghfir la-kum min dhunub-i-kum in the original does not mean that Allah will forgive some of their sins, but its correct meaning is: " If you accept and acknowledge the three things which are being presented before you, He will forgive all the sins that you have committed in the past. "
*4) That is, " If you accepted these three things, you would be given respite to live in the world until the time that Allah has appointed for your natural death. "
*5) " The appointed time of Allah ..
": the time fixed by Allah for sending down a torment on a people.
In this regard the Qur'an has at several places stated explicitly that when Allah's torment has been decreed for a certain people, they are not pardoned even if they affirm the faith after it.
*6) That is, " If you come to know fully well that the time which is now passing after you have received Allah's message through me, is, in fact, a period of respite that has been granted to you for affirming the faith-and there is no chance of escape from Allah's torment after the term of respite has elapsed-you would testify to the faith without delay and would not like to postpone it until the torment actually started descending on you. ( That He may forgive you somewhat of your sins ) He will forgive your sins through your repentance and belief in Allah’s divine Oneness ( and respite you ) without sending a punishment on you ( to an appointed term ) until you die. ( Lo! the term of Allah ) the torment of Allah, ( when it cometh, cannot be delayed, if ye but knew ) if you believe in what I say to you.
