Quran 34:50 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Say ‘If I go astray from the truth I will be going astray only to my own loss that is to say the sin of my going astray shall be held against me; and if I am rightly guided it will have been by what my Lord reveals to me of the Qur’ān and wisdom. Truly He is Hearer of supplications Nigh’.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Say to them: If I should deviate from sense as to tread the wrong path leading into error, then I will have hurt my own soul. And if I should follow the path of righteousness leading into the truth, it is only because Providence is my guide. He inspires me with the spirit of truth guiding into all truth; He is Samiun (His audition is unlimited) and Qaribun. His Omnipresence puts Him in the proximity of all His created beings
Quran 34:50 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
I do not ask for any Reward for conveying the Message
Allah commands His Messenger to say to the idolators:
مَا سَأَلْتُكُم مِّن أَجْرٍ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ
( Whatever wage I might have asked of you is yours. ) meaning, `I do not want anything for conveying the Message of Allah to you, advising you and telling you to worship Allah.'
My wage is from Allah only, means, rather I will seek the reward for that with Allah.
and He is a Witness over all things.
means, He knows all things, and He knows everything about me and the manner in which I am conveying the Message to you, and He knows all about you.
( Say: "Verily, my Lord sends down the truth, the All-Knower of the Unseen." ) This is like the Ayah:
يُلْقِى الرُّوحَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ عَلَى مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ
( He sends the Revelation by His command to any of His servants He wills ) ( 40:15 ).
meaning, He sends the angel to whomsoever He wills of His servants among the people on earth, and He is the All-Knower of the Unseen; nothing whatsoever is hidden from Him in the heavens or on earth.
( Say: "The truth has come, and the falsehood can neither create anything nor resurrect." ) means, truth and the great Law have come from Allah, and falsehood has gone and has perished and vanished.
This is like the Ayah:
بَلْ نَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ عَلَى الْبَـطِلِ فَيَدْمَغُهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٌ
( Nay, We fling the truth against the falsehood, so it destroys it, and behold, it is vanished ) ( 21:18 ).
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Al-Masjid Al-Haram on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and found those idols standing around the Ka`bah, he started to hit the idols with his bow, reciting,
( And say: "The truth has come and the falsehood has vanished.
Surely, the falsehood is ever bound to vanish." ) ( 17:81 ), and:
( Say: "The truth has come, and the falsehood can neither create anything nor resurrect." ) This was recorded by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i.
( Say: "If (even ) I go astray, I shall stray only to my own loss.
But if I remain guided, it is because of the Revelation of my Lord to me...") means, all good comes from Allah, and in what Allah sends down of revelation and clear truth there is guidance and wisdom.
So whoever goes astray, does so by himself, as `Abdullah bin Mas`ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said when he was asked about some issue.
He said, "I will say what I think, and if it is correct, then it is from Allah, and if it is wrong, then it is from me and from the Shaytan, and Allah and His Messenger have nothing to do with it."
Truly, He is All-Hearer, Ever Near.
means, He hears all the words of His servants, and He is always near to respond to them when they call on Him.
An-Nasa0 0 recorded the Hadith of Abu Mu0sa0 which also appears in the Two Sلahل0hلs:
«إِنَّكُمْ لَاتَدْعُونَ أَصَمَّ وَلَا غَائِبًا، إِنَّمَا تَدْعُونَ سَمِيعًا قَرِيبًا مُجِيبًا»
( You are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent; you are calling upon One Who is All-Hearer, Ever Near and Responsive. )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(34:50) Say: 'If I go astray then the hurt of straying will come only upon me. But if I am rightly-guided, that is only because of the revelation that my Lord makes to me. He is All-Hearing, Ever Nigh.' *71
Say, "If I should err, I would meaning
*71) From this verse some people of the modern age have argued thus: According to it the Holy Prophet also could go astray: rather used to go astray.
That is why Allah has made the Holy Prophet himself say: `If I have gone astray, I am myself responsible for this.
And I am on right guidance only when my Lord sends down Revelation ( i.e., verses of the Qur'an ) to me." By this wrong interpretation these unjust people in fact want to prove that the Holy Prophet's life was, God forbid, a combination of guidance and error, and Allah had made him confess this before the disbelievers Lest one should adopt his obedience completely, taking him to be wholly on right guidance.
The fact however is that whoever considers the theme in its correct context will know that here the words, 'If I have gone astray', are not meant to give the meaning that the Holy Prophet actually used to go astray, but it means: `If I have gone astray, as you accuse I have, and my claim to Prophethood and my this invitation to Tauhid are the result of the same deviation, as you seem to imagine, then the burden of my going astray, will be on me alone; you will not be held responsible for it.
But if I am on right guidance, as in fact I am, it is because I receive Revelation from my Lord, by virtue of which I have obtained the knowledge of the guidance.
My Lord is near at hand and is hearing everything.
He knows whether I have gone astray or am on right guidance from Him.

We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
