﴿۞ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا عَبْدًا مَّمْلُوكًا لَّا يَقْدِرُ عَلَىٰ شَيْءٍ وَمَن رَّزَقْنَاهُ مِنَّا رِزْقًا حَسَنًا فَهُوَ يُنفِقُ مِنْهُ سِرًّا وَجَهْرًا ۖ هَلْ يَسْتَوُونَ ۚ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾
[ النحل: 75]
16:75 Allah presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allah! But most of them do not know.

God strikes a similitude mathalan this is substituted by the following ‘abdan mamlūkan a slave who is a chattel mamlūkan an adjective to distinguish him this type of slave from a free man who is the servant of God alone having no power over anything since he has no mastery and one on whom man is an indefinite noun adjectivally qualified in other words a free man We have bestowed a fair provision from Us such that he spends thereof secretly and openly that is disposing of it as he wishes the first similitude is for the idols while the second is His exalted be He. Are they equal? the powerless slaves and the dispensing free men? No. Praise belongs to God alone. But most of them that is the people of Mecca do not know the chastisement they will come to and so they associate others with God.

Allah cites an instance of two men in illustration of a general truth. One is a slave, the property of his master, who is divested of freedom and personal rights, the other is the master in whom Our grace abounds; he is free to spend in divine service and/or in other services secretly and publicly. Can they produce or achieve something equal or possess a like degree in any aspect of life! Never. Therefore, how can Allah the Creator of all be equaled with any being! Praise be to Him and extolled are His glorious attributes, but most of them do not realize this fact

The Example of the Believer and the Disbeliever, or the Idol and the True God
Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said: "This is the example which Allah gives of the disbeliever and the believer." This was also the view of Qatadah and Ibn Jarir.
The servant who has no power over anything is like the disbeliever, and the one who is given good provisions and spends of them secretly and openly is like the believer.
Ibn Abi Najih reported that Mujahid said: "This is an example given of the idol and the True God - can they be the same" Once the difference between them is so clear and so obvious, no one can be unaware of it except the one who is foolish.
Allah says:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ
( All the praises and thanks are to Allah.
Nay! (But ) most of them know not.)

(16:75) Allah cites a similitude *66 (of two men): one of them is a slave, who is owned by another and has no power over anything. There is the other man whom We Ourselves have provided with a fair provision from which he freely spends openly and secretly. (Ask them): "Are these two men equal?"-May God be praised! *67 But most people do not mderstand (this simple thing). *68

*66) In the preceding verse, the mushriks were told not to make comparisons between AIlah and His creatures, for there is nothing like Him.
As the bases of their comparison were wrong, their conclusions were also misleading.
In this verse appropriate similitudes have been cited and right comparisons have been made to lead them to Reality.
*67) Between the last question and " May God be praised! " there is a gap which is to be filled with the help of the latter.
When the question was posed, obviously the mushriks could not say that the two men were equal.
So some of them would have admitted that they were not equal, while the others would have kept quiet for fear that in case of admission, they would have to abide by its logical conclusion, that is, the admission of refutation of the doctrine of shirk.
Therefore, the words, " May God be praised ! " have been put in the mouth of the Prophet in answer to both kinds of the response to the question.
In the first case, it would mean: " May God be praised! you have admitted at least so much " .
In the second case, it would mean: " May God be praised! you have kept quiet in spilte of alI your obduracy and have not had the audacity to say that both were equal " .

most people do not understand ( this simple thing ) " that while they feel and carefully observe the distinction between those who have powers and those who are powerless, they neither feel nor observe the clear distinction between the Creator and His creation.
That is why they associate the creatures with the Creator in His Attributes and Powers and show the kind of allegiance to them as is the exclusive right of the Creator.
The pity is that in their everyday life, they would beg for sane thing from the master of the house and not from the servants but in contrast to this, they would beg for their needs from the servants of Allah and not from Him.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
Allah then gave a parable regarding the believer and the disbeliever, saying: ( Allah coineth a similitude: (on the one hand ) a ( mere ) chattel slave) Allah explained the traits of this slave, ( who hath control of nothing ) he has no power to spend or do any good, and in this respect he is just like the disbeliever from whom no good ever comes, ( and (on the other hand ) one on whom We have bestowed a fair provision) abundant wealth ( from Us, and he spendeth thereof secretly ) between him and his Lord ( and openly ) between him and other people for the sake of Allah; this is the simile of the sincere believer. ( Are they equal ) in their reward and obedience? ( Praise be to Allah! ) gratitude is due to Allah and divine Oneness is also Allah’s. ( But most of them know not ) the parable of the Qur’an. It is also said that this verse was revealed about ’Uthman Ibn ’Affan and an Arab man called Abu’l-’Is Ibn Umayyah.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Allah puts forward the example (of two men a believer and a disbeliever); a slave (disbeliever) under the possession of another, he has no power of any sort, and (the other), a man (believer) on whom We have bestowed a good provision from Us, and He spends thereof secretly and openly. Can they be equal? (By no means, not). All the praises and thanks be to Allah. Nay! (But) most of them know not.
