[We revealed it] lest you say, "The Scripture was only sent down (6:156)

﴿أَن تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أُنزِلَ الْكِتَابُ عَلَىٰ طَائِفَتَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِنَا وَإِن كُنَّا عَن دِرَاسَتِهِمْ لَغَافِلِينَ﴾
[ الأنعام: 156]

6:156 [We revealed it] lest you say, "The Scripture was only sent down to two groups before us, but we were of their study unaware,"

This Book was revealed so that you, idolaters, do not say: Allah only revealed the Torah and the Gospel to the Jews and the Christians before us and He did not reveal any scripture to us.
I do not know how to read their scriptures as they are in their language and not in ours.

Lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: "The Book was only sent down to two sects before us (the Jews and the Christians), and for our part, we were in fact unaware of what they studied."

Lest ye should say: "The Book was sent down to two Peoples before us, and for our part, we remained unacquainted with all that they learned by assiduous study:"

Lest you should say: "The Book was sent down only to two sects before us, and for our part, we were in fact unaware of what they studied."
