They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were (36:19)

The Messengers said: You augur well or ill according to your disposition and your intentions, and the mould of your fortune is in yourselves and the event is only sanctioned by Allah. And do you people, they added, consider the spirit of truth that guides into all truth a presage of evil! You are but a people characterized by disobedience and transgression

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(36:19) The Messengers replied: 'Your evil omen is with you. *15 (Are you saying this) because you were asked to take heed? The truth is that you are a people who have exceeded all bounds.' *16

They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were meaning

*15) That is, "No one is an evil omen for another. Everyman's augury is hanging around his own neck.If a person sees an evil, it is because of his own self; and if he sees a good, it is also because of his own self. 'We have fastened the augury of every man to his own neck'." (Bani Isra'il: 13).
*16) That is, "You in fact want to avoid the good and you like the deviation instead of the guidance. Therefore, instead of determining the truth and falsehood by means of an argument, you arc making these false pretences on account of your superstitious whims."

رسولوں نے جواب دیا "تمہاری فال بد تو تمہارے اپنے ساتھ لگی ہوئی ہے کیا یہ باتیں تم اِس لیے کرتے ہو کہ تمہیں نصیحت کی گئی؟ اصل بات یہ ہے کہ تم حد سے گزرے ہوئے لوگ ہو"
