﴿وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ﴾
[ الأنعام: 42]

English - Sahih International

6:42 And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

I sent messengers to many communities before you, O Messenger, but those communities denied their messengers and turned away from what they brought.
I then tried them with poverty and sickness in order for them to submit and humble themselves before their Lord.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad SAW). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility.

Walaqad arsalna ila omamin min qablika faakhathnahum bialbasai waalddarrai laAAallahum yatadarraAAoona

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Translation

Before thee We sent (messengers) to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity, that they might learn humility.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you. And We seized them with extreme poverty and loss of health so that they might believe with humility.
