Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would (39:57)

﴿أَوْ تَقُولَ لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ هَدَانِي لَكُنتُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ﴾
[ الزمر: 57]

39:57 Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."

Or it will attempt to justify itself through the argument of fate and say: If Allah had guided me I would have been one of those who are mindful of him, by fulfilling His instructions and avoiding His prohibitions.

Or (lest) he should say: "If only Allah had guided me, I should indeed have been among the Muttaqun (pious and righteous persons - see V. 2:2)."

Aw taqoola law anna Allaha hadanee lakuntu mina almuttaqeena

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Translation

"Or (lest) it should say: 'If only Allah had guided me, I should certainly have been among the righteous!'-

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Or (lest) he should say: "If only Allah had guided me, I should indeed have been among those who have Taqwa."
