﴿فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيْكَ وَضَائِقٌ بِهِ صَدْرُكَ أَن يَقُولُوا لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ جَاءَ مَعَهُ مَلَكٌ ۚ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ نَذِيرٌ ۚ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَكِيلٌ﴾
[ هود: 12]

11:12 Then would you possibly leave [out] some of what is revealed to you, or is your breast constrained by it because they say, "Why has there not been sent down to him a treasure or come with him an angel?" But you are only a warner. And Allah is Disposer of all things.

Perhaps O Muhammad (s) you might think to leave out some of what is revealed to you such that you do not convey it to them for they do not take it seriously and that your breast should be straitened by it by reciting it to them because they say ‘Why has a treasure not been sent down for him or an angel not come with him?’ to confirm his sincerity as we had requested? You are but a warner and yours is only to convey the Message not to produce what they have requested; and God is Guardian over all things He is Preserver of all things so He will requite them accordingly.

You Muhammad seem inclined to omit the recital of a part of what is revealed to you, the part that depresses your spirits and oppresses your thoughts and feelings because it is not to the infidels liking. You think that by so doing, Allahs message of truth would be accepted more readily and the infidels shall not use the usual formula of insolence and say: If only a treasure were sent down to him from heaven or an angel to companion him, we may be induced to recognize his mission. You must realize that you are only a spectacle and a warning, and Allah is the Tutelary Guardian of the whole and of all in all

The Messenger grieving by the Statements of the Polytheists, and His Gratification This statement of Allah, the Exalted, to His Messenger comforted the worries that the polytheists were causing him due to their statements directed towards him.
This is just as Allah says about them, وَقَالُواْ مَا لِهَـذَا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشِى فِى الاٌّسْوَاقِ لَوْلا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيَكُونَ مَعَهُ نَذِيراً - أَوْ يُلْقَى إِلَيْهِ كَنْزٌ أَوْ تَكُونُ لَهُ جَنَّةٌ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا وَقَالَ الظَّـلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلاَّ رَجُلاً مَّسْحُوراً ( And they say: "Why does this Messenger eat food, and walk about in the markets.
Why is not an angel sent down to him to be a warner with him" Or; "(why )
has not a treasure been granted to him, or why has he not a garden whereof he may eat" And the wrongdoers say: "You follow none but a man bewitched.") 25:7-8 Thus, Allah commanded His Messenger and guided him to not let these statements of theirs grieve his heart.
Allah directed him to not let these statements prevent him, or deter him from calling them to Allah, both day and night.
This is as Allah said, وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ( Indeed, We know that your breast is straitened at what they say. ) 15:97 Allah says in this verse, فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَى إِلَيْكَ وَضَآئِقٌ بِهِ صَدْرُكَ أَن يَقُولُواْ ( So perchance you may give up a part of what is revealed unto you, and that your breast feels straitened for it because they say... ) The meaning here is that he ( the Prophet ) may be compelled to give up the Message due to what they ( the polytheists ) say about him.
However, Allah goes on to explain: "You ( Muhammad ) are only a warner and you have an example in your brothers of the Messengers who came before you.
For verily, the previous Messengers were rejected and harmed, yet they were patient until the help of Allah came to them." An Explanation concerning the Miracle of the Qur'an Then Allah, the Exalted, explains the miracle of the Qur'an, and that no one is able to produce its like, or even bring ten chapters, or one chapter like it.
The reason for this is that the Speech of the Lord of all that exists is not like the speech of the created beings, just as His attributes are not like the attributes of the creation.
Nothing resembles His existence.
Exalted is He, the Most Holy, and the Sublime.
There is no deity worthy of worship except He and there is no true Lord other than He.
Then Allah goes on to say, فَإِلَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُواْ لَكُمْ ( If then they answer you not, ) Meaning, that if they do not come with a reply to that which you have challenged them with ( to the reproduction of ten chapters like the Qur'an ), then know that it is due to their inability to do so.
Know ( that this is a proof ) that this is the speech revealed from Allah.
It contains His knowledge, His commands and His prohibitions.
Then Allah continues by saying, وَأَن لاَّ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ فَهَلْ أَنتُمْ مُّسْلِمُونَ ( and that there is no God besides Him! Will you then be Muslims )

(11:12) (O Messenger!) Let it not happen that you omit (to expound) a portion of what was revealed to you. And do not be distressed that they will say: 'Why was a treasure not bestowed upon him?' or 'Why did no angel accompany him?' For you are merely a warner, whereas Allah has control over everything. *13

In order to fully understand the verse one should take mental note of the circumstantial background of its revelation.
At the time this verse was revealed, Makka was the centre of the Quraysh who had a preponderant influence over the whole of Arabia because of their religious prestige, wealth, trade, and political power.
At the very moment when the Quraysh were at the zenith of their power and authority, a Makkan - the Prophet - stood up and vehemently denounced the religion of which they were custodians as a bundle of ignorance and error.
He also condemned the social system of which they were standard-bearers, calling it rotten to the core.
He also warned them of an impending punishment from God.
He emphasized that the only way to avert this punishment was to accept the true faith and righteous order of life which he had expounded to them on God's behalf.

The only thing which this man had to make people believe he had been appointed by God to communicate His message, was the purity of his character and the utter reasonableness of his teaching.
In addition, there was apparently nothing in the milieu except the deep-rooted wrongs which had corrupted the religious, moral and social life of the Quraysh that would suggest that God's punishment was close at hand.
On the contrary, all portents indicated that the Makkans enjoyed God's plenteous favours and of the deities which they worshipped.
Thus, apparently they had every reason to believe that they were on the right path.

If, under such circumstances, someone in the manner of the Prophet ( peace be on him ) were to strongly denounce the prevalent way of life, it was hardly surprising that all except a very few right-thinking people who had access to the truth would become his inveterate enemies.
This enmity found its expression in a myriad of forms.
Some people sought to suppress the Prophet ( peace be on him ) by resorting to harsh methods of repression.
Others tried to undermine his position by false accusations and vicious propaganda.
Some discouraged him with their bigoted indifference and frowning, while others resorted to jests, pranks, taunts, and ridicule in order to dismiss his message as absurd.

It is clear that such a hostile attitude would have been heart-breaking for the Prophet ( peace be on him ).
This would have been especially so since the hostility persisted for several years.
It is under these trying circumstances that God consoled the Prophet ( peace be on him ).
He comforted him by saying that it is people of low mettle who turn boastful in prosperity and become downcast and despondent in adversity.
A worthy person in God's sight pursues righteousness with patience and courage.
Hence, the Prophet ( peace be on him ) should not be shaken by the bigoted opposition, the aversion, the ridicule and mockery, and the foolish objections which he was subjected to by the unbelievers.
On the contrary, he should have no hesitation, despite all the opposition he faced, in calling people to the truth revealed by God.
In fact, he should not even permit a moment's reluctance in proclaiming the truth for fear that he would be ridiculed for propagating those teachings.
Nor should he shrink from performing his duty to preach because some of those teachings would be too unpalatable for his people even to hear.
For the main task of the Prophet ( peace be on him ) was to continuously state the truth, uncompromisingly and fearlessly, and regardless of those who accepted it and those who did not.
Once this duty had been performed, it was pointless worrying whether it would be of any effect.
In that regard, the Prophet ( peace be on him ) ought to place his reliance entirely on God.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs


( A likely thing, that thou ) O Muhammad ( wouldst forsake aught of that which hath been revealed unto thee ) that which you were commanded in the Qur’an of conveying the message and of reviling and denigrating their idols, ( and that thy breast should be straitened for it ) and that you are annoyed with what you were commanded, ( because they say ) because the disbelievers of Mecca say: ( Why hath not a treasure ) wealth from heaven ( been sent down for him ) for Muhammad to support himself with, ( or an angel come with him ) to testify in his favour? ( Thou art ) O Muhammad ( but a warner ) a warning Messenger, ( and Allah is in charge ) Allah is Custodian; it is also said this means: witness ( of all things ) of their saying and chastisement.

So perchance you (Muhammad SAW) may give up a part of what is revealed unto you, and that your breast feels straitened for it because they say, "Why has not a treasure been sent down unto him, or an angel has come with him?" But you are only a warner. And Allah is a Wakil (Disposer of affairs, Trustee, Guardian, etc.) over all things.
