English - Sahih International

35:18 And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And if a heavily laden soul calls [another] to [carry some of] its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he should be a close relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord unseen and have established prayer. And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to Allah is the [final] destination.

Quran 35:18 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another sinful soul. And should one soul burdened heavily with sin call for some of its burden to be borne by another nothing of it will be borne even if the one called be a relative kin such as a father or a son — the impossibility of ‘having something borne by another’ in both instances is something ordained by God. You can only warn those who fear their Lord in secret in other words those who fear Him despite not having seen Him for they are the ones to benefit from the warning and observe the prayer maintain performance of it. For whoever purifies himself cleansing himself of idolatry and other similar abominations is purifying himself only for the sake of his own soul because the reforming of his self pertains to him. And to God is the end of the journeying the return in the Hereafter when He will requite according to deeds.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Nor would a soul heavily laden with wrongs find a single one to disburden her of some of her wrongs, nor the least of her burden be carried by any one else even if related by consanguinity. Your admonition and warning O Muhammad take effect with those who entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Allah albeit they do not apprehend Him by sight and they attend to religious Observances. And he who presents himself with a heart impressed with the image of religious and spiritual virtues and deeds with wisdom and piety will have successfully saved his own soul, and to Allah is the final and inevitable destination

Quran 35:18 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Mankind is in need of Allah, and each Person will carry His own Burdens on the Day of Resurrection Allah tells us that He has no need of anyone or anything else, but all of creation is in need of Him and is in a position of humility before Him.
He says: يأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَآءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ( O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allah. ) meaning, they need Him in all that they do, but He has no need of them at all.
Allah says: وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْغَنِىُّ الْحَمِيدُ But Allah is the Rich, Worthy of all praise.
meaning, He is unique in His being Free of all needs, and has no partner or associate, and He is Worthy of all praise in all that He does, says, decrees and legislates. إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُـمْ وَيَأْتِ بِخَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ ( If He willed, He could destroy you and bring about a new creation. ) means, if He wanted to, He could destroy you and bring forth another people, and this is not difficult or impossible for Him.
He says: وَمَا ذَلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ بِعَزِيزٍ ( And that is not hard for Allah. ) Allah's saying: وَلاَ تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى ( And no bearer of burdens shall bear another's burden; ) means, on the Day of Resurrection. وَإِن تَدْعُ مُثْقَلَةٌ إِلَى حِمْلِهَا ( and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear ) his load, ) means, if the person who is carrying a heavy burden calls someone else to help him carry his load, all or part of it, لاَ يُحْمَلْ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَى ( nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. ) means, even if he is closely-related to him, even if he is his father or son, for each person will be preoccupied with his own self and his own situation.
Then Allah says: إِنَّمَا تُنذِرُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ وَأَقَامُواْ الصَّلَوةَ ( You can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen and perform the Salah. ) means, `the only ones who will draw a lesson from what you have brought are those who are possessed of insight and wisdom, who fear their Lord and who do as He commands.' وَمَن تَزَكَّى فَإِنَّمَا يَتَزَكَّى لِنَفْسِهِ ( And he who purifies himself, then he purifies only for the benefit of himself. ) means, who does righteous deeds, the benefit of that will come back to him, وَإِلَى اللَّهِ الْمَصِيرُ And to Allah is the Return.
means, to Him everything will ultimately return, and He is swift in bringing to account.
He will reward or punish everyone according to his deeds: if they are good, then the end will be good, and if they are bad, then the end will be bad.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(35:18) No one can bear another's burden. *39 If a heavily laden one should call another to carry his load, none of it shall be carried by the other, even though he be a near of kin. *40 (O Prophet), you can warn only those who fear their Lord without seeing Him and establish Prayer. *41 Whoever purifies himself does so to his own good. To Allah is the final return.

And no bearer of burdens will bear meaning

*39) " Burden ": the burden of the responsibilities of actions.
It means: In the sight of Allah every one is responsible for his own actions and for no one else's.
There is no possibility that AIlah will place the burden of one man's responsibility upon the other, nor is there the possibility that a person will take the burden of another's responsibility upon himself and get himself seized for the crime committed by the other.
This thing has been said here because the polytheist kinsmen and relatives of the people who were embracing Islam in Makkah, used to urge them, saying, 'Give up Islam and return to your ancestral faith.
We take the responsibility of any punishment etc.
on ourselves."
*40) In the preceding sentence, Allah's law of justice has been enunciated, according to which He will not seize any person for the sin committed by another, but will hold everyone responsible for his own sin.
In this sentence the Muslims have been told: `Those who urge you to give up faith and commit evil on the assurance that they will take on themselves the burden of your sins on the Day of Resurrection, are in fact giving you a false hope.
When Resurrection comes and the people see what fate they are going to meet in consequence of their misdeed, everyone will be concerned only about himself.
Brother will turn away from brother and father from son, and no one will be prepared to take even an atom's weight of another's burden on himself. "

*41) In other words, " Your warnings cannot have any effect on obstinate and stubborn people.
Your admonitions can bring only such people to the right path, who have fear of God in their hearts, and who are inclined to bow before their real Master. "

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

And no burdened soul can bear another’s burden) i.e. with a good disposition of the soul but only insofar as it is forced to do so; it is also said that this means: no soul will be taken to task for the crime of another; and it is also said that this means: no soul will be tormented without having committed a crime, ( and if one heavy laden ) with sins ( crieth for (help with ) his load, naught of it) none of the sins ( will be lifted even though he (unto whom he crieth ) be of kin) his father, mother, son or daughter. ( Thou warnest only ) your warning, O Muhammad, benefits only ( those who fear their Lord in secret ) those who work for their Lord even though He is invisible to them, but nothing is invisible to Him, ( and have established worship ) and perform the five daily prayers. ( He who groweth (in goodness )) he who believes in Allah’s divine Oneness, does good works and spends of his wealth in charity, ( groweth only for himself ) the reward of all this goes to his own soul. ( Unto Allah is the journeying ) unto Allah is the return in the Hereafter.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And no bearer of burdens shall bear another's burden, and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. You (O Muhammad SAW) can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen, and perform As-Salat (IqamatasSalat). And he who purifies himself (from all kinds of sins), then he purifies only for the benefit of his ownself. And to Allah is the (final) Return (of all).
