English - Sahih International

73:20 Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Surah Al-Muzzammil in Arabic

Tafsir Surah Muzammil ayat 20

Al-Jalalayn Muntakhab Ibn Kathir

تفسير الآية Indonesia tafsir Urdu

Quran 73:20 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

Assuredly your Lord knows that you stand vigil less than two thirds of the night or at times a half of it or a third of it if read wa-nisfihi wa-thuluthihi then these constitute a supplement to thuluthay ‘two thirds’; if read wa-nisfahu wa-thuluthahu then a supplement to adnā ‘less than’ — his keeping vigil in the way mentioned is in accordance with what was enjoined on him at the beginning of this sūra — along with a group of those with you wa-tā’ifatun mina’lladhīna ma‘aka constitutes a supplement to the subject of the verb taqūmu ‘you stand vigil’ but it may also constitute although it is not certain a separating clause. The keeping vigil by some of his companions in this way indicates their emulation of him. Some of them could not tell how much of the night they had spent in prayer and how much of it had remained and would therefore keep vigil all night as a precaution; and so they used to keep vigil in this way for a whole year or more with their feet swollen until God alleviated matters for them. He exalted be He says and God keeps measures He keeps count of the night and the day. He knows that an softened in place of the hardened form its subject having been omitted that is to say annahu you will not be able to keep count of it that is the length of the night so that you may perform the vigil at the time in which it is required unless you stay up all night which is hard on you and so He has relented to you making you revert to what is easier. So recite as much as is feasible of the Qur’ān during prayer by performing as much prayer as is feasible. He knows that an softened in place of the hardened form that is to say annahu some of you will be sick while others will be travelling in the land seeking the bounty of God seeking of His provision through commerce and otherwise and others will be fighting in the way of God for each of the three groups mentioned the keeping of nightly vigil is hard and so God has alleviated things for them by enjoining on them what is feasible.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Allah, your Creator knows that you (Muhammad) and some of those who follow you, engage in the act of worship and meditation, at times, close to two thirds of the night or half the night and other times one third of it to ponder the Revelation. Allah determines the duration of the night and the day; He knew you would not be able to determine the course He prescribed and ordained, and so He gave so merciful a turn to you. Therefore, read of the Quran as much as will put you at ease. He knows that among you there will be those who are suffering from illness, others journeying the land to seek Allahs bounty and others fighting in His cause. Therefore, read of it - the Quran - as much as will put you at ease, and perform your prayers and give alms, for alms are but the vehicles of prayer. Also lend Allah all you can of your benevolence, and whatever you advance of piety toward future security, you shall find it in heavens realm of such a value that it reimburses you what is indeed profitable and really rewarding and invoke Allahs forgiveness; Allah is indeed Ghaforun (Forgiving) and Rahimun (Merciful)

Quran 73:20 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

This is a Surah that Men of Sound Understanding receive Admonition from Allah says, إِنَّ هَـذِهِ ( Verily, this ) meaning, this Surah. تَذْكِرَةٌ ( an admonition, ) meaning, men of understanding receive admonition from it.
Thus, Allah says, فَمَن شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَى رَبِّهِ سَبِيلاً ( therefore whosoever wills, let him take a path to His Lord. ) meaning, from those whom Allah wills that they be guided.
This is similar to the stipulation that Allah mentions in another Surah, وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلاَّ أَن يَشَآءَ اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيماً حَكِيماً ( But you cannot will, unless Allah wills.
Verily Allah is Ever All-Knowing, Al-Wise. )
( 76:30 ) Abrogation of the Obligation to offer the Night Prayer and a Mention of its Valid Excuses Then Allah says, إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَى مِن ثُلُثَىِ الَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ( Verily, your Lord knows that you do stand a little less than two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and also a party of those with you. ) meaning, sometimes like this and sometimes like that, and all of these are done unintentionally.
However, you all are not able to be consistent with the night prayer Allah has commanded you, because it is difficult for you.
Thus, Allah says, وَاللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ( And Allah measures the night and the day. ) meaning, sometimes the night and day are equal, and sometimes one of them will be longer or shorter than the other. عَلِمَ أَلَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ ( He knows that you are unable to pray the whole night, ) meaning, the obligation which He prescribed for you. مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْءَانِ عَلِمَ ( So, recite you of the Qur'an as much as may be easy. ) meaning, without specification of any set time.
This means, stand and pray during the night as much as is easy ( for you ).
Allah uses the term recitation ( Qira'ah ) to mean prayer ( Salah ).
This is as Allah says in Surah Subhan ( Al-Isra' ), وَلاَ تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاتِكَ ( And offer your Salah neither aloud ) ( 17:110 ) meaning, your recitation. وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِهَا ( Nor in low voice. ) ( 17:110 ) Then Allah says, أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُمْ مَّرْضَى وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِى الاٌّرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَـتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَاقْرَءُواْ ( He knows that there will be some among you sick, others traveling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty, yet others fighting in Allah's cause. ) meaning, He knows that there will be people of this nation who will have excuses for not praying the ( voluntary ) night prayer.
They are those who are ill and therefore they are not able to perform it, and those who are traveling in the land seeking the bounty of Allah in business and trade, and others who will be busy with that which is more important to them.
An example of this is going on expeditions to fight in the way of Allah.
This Ayah, rather, this entire Surah was revealed in Makkah even though fighting was not legislated until after it was revealed.
Thus, it is among the greatest of the signs of prophethood, because it informs about unseen matters of the future.
Thus, Allah says, مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ وَأَقِيمُواْ ( So recite as much of the Qur'an as may be easy, ) meaning, stand and pray at night whatever is easy for you to do of it.
Allah said; وَأَقِيمُواْ الصَّلوةَ وَآتُواْ الزَّكَوةَ ( and perform Salah and give Zakah, ) meaning, establish your obligatory prayers and pay your obligatory Zakah.
This is a proof for those who say that Zakah was made obligatory in Makkah, but the various amounts of Nisab and how much was to be given was clarified in Al-Madinah.
And Allah knows best.
Ibn `Abbas, `Ikrimah, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, Qatadah and others from the Salaf have said, "Verily, this Ayah abrogated the standing for prayer at night that Allah previously made obligatory for the Muslims." It has been confirmed in the Two Sahihs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man,
«خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَة»
( Five obligatory prayers during a day and a night (are obligatory ).)" The man said, "Is there anything other than this ( of prayer ) that is obligatory upon me" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied,
«لَا، إِلَّا أَنْ تَطَوَّع»
( No, except what you may do voluntarily. ) The Command to give Charity and do Good Deeds Allah says, اللَّهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناً وَمَا ( and lend to Allah a handsome loan. ) meaning, from charitable donations.
For verily, Allah will reward for this the best and most abundant of rewards.
This is as Allah says, مَّن ذَا الَّذِى يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً ( Who is he that will lend to Allah a goodly loan so that He may multiply it to him many times ) ( 2:245 ) Then Allah says, تُقَدِّمُواْ لاًّنفُسِكُمْ مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْراً وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْراً وَاسْتَغْفِرُواْ ( And whatever good you send before you for yourselves, you will certainly find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. ) meaning, for all that you send before yourselves, you will get it ( back ) and it will be better than what you kept for yourselves in the worldly life.
Al-Hafiz Abu Ya`la Al-Mawsili reported from Al-Harith bin Suwayd, from `Abdullah that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
«أَيُّكُمْ مَالُهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ مَالِ وَارِثِهِ؟»
( Which of you hold his wealth to be more beloved to him than the wealth of his heir ) rThey said, "O Messenger of Allah! There is not a single one of us who does not hold his wealth to be more beloved to him than the wealth of his heir." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said,
«اعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُون»
( Know what you are saying! ) They replied, "What do we know other than this, O Messenger of Allah" He then said,
«إِنَّمَا مَالُ أَحَدِكُمْ مَا قَدَّمَ، وَمَالُ وَارِثِهِ مَا أَخَّر»
( The wealth of one of you is only that which he sends forth, and the wealth of his heir is that which he leaves behind. ) Al-Bukhari also recorded this Hadith.
Then Allah says, وَاسْتَغْفِرُواْ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ( And seek forgiveness of Allah.
Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. )
meaning, remember Him and seek forgiveness from Him often for all of your matters.
For verily, He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful to whoever seeks His forgiveness.
This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Al-Muzzammil, and all praise and blessings are due to Allah.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(73:20) (O Prophet), *18 your Lord knows that you sometimes stand up in Prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, and sometimes half or one-third of it,  *19and so does a party of those with you; *20 Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot keep an accurate count of it, so He has shown mercy to you. So now recite as much of the Qur'an as you can. *21 He knows that there are among you those who are sick and others who are journeying in the land in quest of Allah's bounty, *22 and still others who are fighting in the cause of Allah. *23 So recite as much of the Qur'an as you easily can, and establish Prayer, and pay Zakah, *24 and give Allah a goodly loan. *25 Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you shall find it with Allah. That is better and its reward is greater. *26 And ask for Allah's forgiveness; surely He is Most Forgiving, Most Compassionate.

Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that meaning

*18) About this verse in which reduction has been made in the injunction concerning the Tahajjud Prayer, there are different traditions.
Musnad Ahmad, Muslim and Abu Da'ud have related a tradition, on the authority of Hadrat `A'ishah, saying that this second command was sent down one year after the first command, and the standing up in the Prayer at night was made voluntary instead of obligatory.
Another tradition which Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim have related, again on the authority of Hadrat `A'ishah, says that this command came down 8 months after the first command, and a third tradition which Ibn Abi Hatim has related again from her, says that it came down 16 months later.
Abu Da'ud, Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim have cited the period of one year from Hadrat `Abdullah bin 'Abbas.
But Hadrat Sa'id bin Jubair has stated that it was sent down ten years later.
( Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim ).
In our opinion this last view is most sound, for the subject-matter of the first section clearly shows that it was sent down in Makkah and that too in the earliest stage when at the most four years might have passed since the advent of Prophethood.
Contrary to this, this second section, .in view of the express evidence of its subject matter, seems to have been revealed at Madinah when fighting had started with the disbelievers and the zakat also had been enjoined as an obligatory duty.
On this basis inevitably the two sections should have been sent down at an interval of at least ten years between them.

*19) Although the initial command to the Holy Prophet was to keep standing up in the Prayer for half the.
night, or thereabout, it was difficult to compute the tithe precisely in the absorption of the Prayer, especially when there were no watches either to measure time accurately; therefore, sometimes twothirds of the night passed in the prayer and sometimes only one-third of it.

*20) In the initial command only the Holy Prophet ( upon whom be peace ) was addressed and only he was instructed to stand up in the Prayer by night.
But since the Muslims at that time were ardently desirous of following him in everything he did and of earning more and more good and virtues, many of the Companions also performed this Night Prayer regularly.

*21) As the Prayer is prolonged due mainly to a lengthy recital of the Qur'an, it is said: " You may recite as much of the Qur'an as you easily can in the Tahajjud Prayer This would automatically cause the Prayer to be shortened " .
Although the words here are apparently in the imperative mood, it is agreed by all that Tahajjud is not an obligatory but a voluntary Prayer.
In the Hadith also it has been explained that on an enquiry by a person the Holy Prophet ( upon whom be peace ) replied: " Five times Prayer in the day and night is obligatory on you.
He asked: Is anything besides this also binding on me? The Holy Prophet said: No, unless you may like to offer something of your own accord.
"
( Bukhari, Muslim ).
This verse also shows another thing.
Just as the bowing ( ruku ) and prostration ( sajdah. ) are obligatory in the Prayer, so is the recital of the Qur'an.
For just as Allah at other places has used the words ruku' and sajdah for the prayer, so here He has mentioned recital of the Qur'an, which implies its recital in the Prayer.
If somebody objects to this conclusion, saying: When the Tahajjud Prayer itself is voluntary, how can recital of the Qur'an in it be obligatory? The answer is: Even in case of the voluntary Prayer it is incumbent on one to fulfil all the pre-requisites of the Prayer and to perform all its basic elements and obligatory parts.
No one can say that in case of the voluntary Prayer, purity of the garments and body, ablutions and concealment of the satar ( minimal part of the body to be covered ) are not obligatory, and the standing up and sitting and performance of ruku`and sajdah also in it are only voluntary.

*22) Travelling to earn one's living by lawful and permissible methods has been described in many places in the Qur'an as the seeking of Allah's bounty.

*23) Here, the way Allah has made mention of seeking pure livelihood and fighting in the Way of Allah together and declared these two, besides the compulsion on account of illness, as reasons for exemption from the Tahajjud Prayer, or concession in it, shows how meritorious it is in Islam-to earn one's livelihood by lawful methods.
In the Hadith, Hadrat `Abdullah bin Mas`ud has reported that the Holy Prophet ( upon whom be peace ) said: " The person who came to a city of the Muslims with foodgrains and sold it at the rate of the day, will attain to a place nearest to Allah, and then the Holy Prophet recited this very verse. " ( lbn Marduyah ), Hadrat 'Umar once said: " Except for fighting in the way of Allah, the state in which I would love to be overtaken by death, is the state when I am overtaken by it while passing through a mountain pass in search of livelihood and then he recited this very verse. " ( Baihaqi, Shu ab al-Iman ).

*24) Commentators are agreed that this implies observance of the obligatory Prayer five times a day and giving away of the obligatory zakat.

*25) Ibn Zaid says this implies spending one's wealth in the cause of Allah besides the zakat, whether it is in the cause of fighting in the way of Allah, or for helping the needy, or for public utilities, or other good works.
The meaning of giving to Allah a good loan has been explained at several places above.
See E.N 267 of AI-Baqarah, E.N.
33 of Al-Ma'idah, E.N.
16 of Al-Hadid).

*26) It means: " Whatever you have sent forward for the good of your Hereafter is more beneficial for you than that you withheld in the world and did not spend in any good cause for the pleasure of Allah.
According to a Hadith reported by Hadrat 'Abdullah bin Mas`ud the Holy Prophet ( upon whom be peace ) once asked: "
Which of you has a greater love for his own wealth than for the wealth of his heir? The people said: There is none among us, O Messenger of Allah, who would not have greater love for his own wealth than for the wealth of his heir.
He said: Consider well what you are saying.
The people submitted: This indeed is our considered opinion, O Messenger of Allah.
Thereupon the Holy Prophet said: Your own property is only that which you have sent forward ( for the good f your Hereafter ), and whatever you held back indeed belongs to the heir." ( Bukhari.
Nasa'i, Musnad Abu Ya`la )
.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( Lo! thy Lord ) O Muhammad ( knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly ) less than ( two thirds of the night ) up to half of the night, ( or (sometimes ) half) and sometimes you keep vigil half of the night ( or a third thereof ) and you keep vigil a third of the night; it is also said this means: and sometimes less than half of the night, ( as do a party of those with thee ) and a group of believers with you who keep vigil of the night in prayer. ( Allah measureth the night and the day ) Allah knows the hours of the day and night. ( He knoweth that ye count it not ) i.e. keep track of the hours of the night; it is also said that this means: He knows you will not be able to persevere in that which you are commanded of prayer in the night, ( and turneth unto you in mercy ) and so He forgives you if you do not pray at night. ( Recite, then, of the Qur’an ) when you perform the prayers ( that which is easy for you ) 100 verses and more; and it is also said this means: whatever you wish to recite of the Qur’an. ( He knoweth that there are sick folk among you ) wounded people among you who cannot pray at night, ( while others travel in the land ) fleeing from something or ( in search of Allah’s bounty ) of Allah’s provision and other things, and it is hard on them to pray at night, ( and others (still ) are fighting for the cause of Allah) for the obedience of Allah who will find it hard to pray at night. ( So recite of it ) of the Qur’an in your prayers ( that which is easy (for you ), and establish worship) complete the five daily prayers including what is required for its validity of ritual ablution, bowings, prostrations and the observation of their due times ( and pay the poor-due ) from your wealth ( and (so ) lend unto Allah) by giving to charity; and it is also said: by doing righteous works ( a goodly loan ) truly and sincerely from your hearts. ( Whatsoever good ) alms or righteous works ( ye send before you for your souls, ye will surely find it ) find its reward ( with Allah ) in Paradise preserved for you, neither stolen, drowned, burnt or eaten by borer, ( better ) than what you have left in the life of the world ( and greater in the recompense ) than that which you have. ( And seek forgiveness of Allah ) from your sins. ( Lo! Allah is Forgiving ) He forgives whoever repents, ( Merciful ) towards he who dies repentant, because of the mercy of he who is enveloped in his cloak’.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Verily, your Lord knows that you do stand (to pray at night) a little less than two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so do a party of those with you, And Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to pray the whole night, so He has turned to you (in mercy). So, recite you of the Quran as much as may be easy for you. He knows that there will be some among you sick, others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's Bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause. So recite as much of the Quran as may be easy (for you), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, and lend to Allah a goodly loan, and whatever good you send before you for yourselves, (i.e. Nawafil non-obligatory acts of worship: prayers, charity, fasting, Hajj and 'Umrah, etc.), you will certainly find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. And seek Forgiveness of Allah. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
