39:24 Then is he who will shield with his face the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection [like one secure from it]? And it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste what you used to earn."

Quran 39:24 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Is he who will be fending off is he who will encounter with his face the awful chastisement on the Day of Resurrection …? that is the most severe chastisement when he is flung into the Fire with his hands bound to his neck in fetters is he like one who will be secure from it by entering Paradise? And it will be said to the wrongdoers namely the disbelievers of Mecca ‘Taste now what you used to earn’ that is taste the requital for it.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Does he who has no other means but his face to fight hopelessly the torture of the blazes in Day of Judgement compare with him in whose heart had reigned piety!. There and then shall the wrongful of actions be told: Taste -you infidels- the torment in requital of setting yourselves against Allah and of your evil which was wrought by want of thought
Quran 39:24 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Final Destination of the Disbelievers
( Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection ) he will be rebuked and he and the evildoers like him will be told:
( Taste what you used to earn! ) `Is this like the one who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection' as Allah says:
( Is he who walks prone on his face, more rightly guided, or he who walks upright on the straight way ) ( 67:22 );
( The Day they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire (it will be said to them ): "Taste you the touch of Hell!") ( 54:48 ), and
( Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection ) ( 41:40 ) In each of these Ayat, it was sufficient to refer to one of the two groups.
( Those before them denied, and so the torment came on them from directions they perceived not. ) means, the previous generations who denied the Messengers were destroyed by Allah for their sins.
And none had they to protect them from Allah.
( So Allah made them to taste the disgrace in the present life, ) means, by means of the punishment and revenge which He sent down upon them, and the rejoicing of the believers for what happened to them.
So, let those who are addressed beware, for they have rejected the noblest of the Messengers and the Seal of the Prophets .
And what Allah has promised them of severe punishment in the Hereafter is worse than whatever befell them in this world.
Allah says:
( but greater is the torment of the Hereafter if they only knew! )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(39:24) How woeful is the plight of him who has nothing except his face to shield him from severe chastisement on the Day of Resurrection? *44 Such evil-doers shall be told: 'Taste now the consequence of your deeds.' *45
Then is he who will shield with meaning
*44) One takes a blow on one's face only when one is absolutely helpless and powerless, otherwise until one has some power to resist, one goes on receiving the blows on the other parts of one's body but saves one's face.
Therefore, here the extreme state of helplessness of a person has been depicted, saying that he will receive the severe punishment on his face.
*45) The word kasab, in the Qur'anic terminology, implies one's descrying and earning a reward and punishment in consequence of one's actions and deeds.
The real earning of a doer of good is that he becomes worthy of Allah's reward, and the earning of the evil-doer is the punishment that he will receive in the Hereafter.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( Is he then, who will strike his face against the awful doom ) the severe torment ( upon the Day of Resurrection ) the reference here is to Abu Jahl and his host; his hands will be tied to his neck with iron chains, this is why he covers his face ( (as he who doeth right )? And it will be said unto the wrong-doers) the disbelievers: Abu Jahl and his host; the angels of the Fire say to them: ( Taste ) the doom of ( what ye used to earn ) of what you used to do and say of transgressions in the life of this world.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection (as he who enters peacefully in Paradise)? And it will be said to the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.): "Taste what you used to earn!"
