Verse 31 from surah Hud

English - Sahih International

11:31 And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers."

Quran 11:31 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And I do not say to you “I possess the treasure houses of God” nor “I have knowledge of the Unseen”; nor do I say “I am an angel” nay I am human like you. Nor do I say to those whom your eyes scorn that God will not give them any good — God knows best what is in their souls in their hearts. Lo! if I were to say this then indeed I would be of the evildoers’.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

I do not claim to be in possession of the treasuries of Allah, nor do I indulge in prophecy or claim to foretell future events or realize the unseen nor do I say to you I am an angel, or say to you that those whom you view with contempt shall be denied Allahs blessings. Allah knows best their innermost thoughts and feelings. If I commit myself to such a line of conduct, then I am indeed wrongful of actions

Quran 11:31 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

وَمَآ أَنَاْ بِطَارِدِ الَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ ( I am not going to drive away those who have believed. ) This alludes to the fact that they ( the disbelievers ) requested Nuh to disassociate himself from the believers, because they were averse to them and felt themselves too important to sit with them.
This is similar to the request of disbelievers to the seal of the Messengers ﷺ to disassociate himself from a group of the people who were considered weak in their social status.
They wanted the Prophet to sit with them in a special gathering of the elite.
Therefore, Allah revealed, وَلاَ تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ ( And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon. ) Allah also says, وَكَذلِكَ فَتَنَّا بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لِّيَقُولواْ أَهَـؤُلاءِ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّن بَيْنِنَآ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِالشَّـكِرِينَ ( Thus We have tried some of them with others, that they might say: "Is it these (poor believers ) whom Allah has favored from among us" Does not Allah know best those who are grateful)6:53

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(11:31) I do not say to you that I possess Allah's treasures, nor that I have access to the realm beyond the ken of sense-perception, nor do I claim to be an angel. *37 Nor do I say regarding those whom you look upon with disdain that Allah will not bestow any good upon them. Allah knows best what is in their hearts. Were I to say so I would be one of the wrongdoers.'

And I do not tell you that meaning

*37).
This is a rejoinder to the Prophet Noah's opponents.
His opponents tried to discredit him by saying that he appeared to them to be merely an ordinary human being just like any one of them.
In response to this Noah acknowledges that he is indeed nothing more than a human being, and that he has never claimed to be anything other than that.
Hence, any attack on him on the grounds that he was merely a human being was pointless.

Noah ( peace be on him ), like other Prophets, had claimed no more than what God had intimated to him about the Straight Way comprising right beliefs and sound principles of behaviour.
His people were free to test him in regard to that claim.
It was strange, however, that they asked him about a matter which lay beyond the ken of human perception, something which he had never claimed to know They also made strange demands of him which suggested that he possessed the keys to God's treasures.
They even taunted him on the grounds that like other human beings he also ate and drank and walked around.

All this was meaningless for Noah ( peace be on him ) had never claimed to he an angel and that as such he could dispense with necessary physical and biological requirements.
All that Noah ( peace be on him ) had claimed was that he possessed the knowledge needed to guide human beings in matters of belief, moral conduct, and social behaviour.
Now, what sense did it make to ask such a person what gender a cow's calf would be? By what stretch of the imagination can one establish a nexus between the pregnancy of a cow and sound principles of individual and social conduct? ( See also Towards Understanding the Qur'an, vol.
II, al-An'am 6, nn.
31-2, pp.
234-5. )

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( I say not unto you: I have the treasures of Allah ) I have the keys to Allah’s stores of provision ( nor I have knowledge of the Unseen, ) when the chastisement shall descend or that which is hidden from me ( nor say I: Lo! I am an angel! ) from heaven. ( Nor say I unto those whom your eyes scorn ) those whom you belittle ( that Allah will not give them good ) that Allah will not favour them with genuine faith. ( Allah knoweth best what is their hearts ) of belief. ( Lo! then indeed ) if drive them away ( I should be of the wrong-doers ) I should be of those who harm themselves.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

"And I do not say to you that with me are the Treasures of Allah, "Nor that I know the Ghaib (unseen); "nor do I say I am an angel, and I do not say of those whom your eyes look down upon that Allah will not bestow any good on them. Allah knows what is in their inner-selves (as regards belief, etc.). In that case, I should, indeed be one of the Zalimun (wrong-doers, oppressors, etc.)."
