Quran 12:36 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And there entered the prison with him two youths two young men servants of the king one of whom was his cup-bearer the other his food-taster. They noticed that he interpreted dreams and so they said ‘Let us try him’. One of them the cup-bearer said ‘I dreamed that I was pressing wine’ that is grapes. The other the food-taster said ‘I dreamed that I was carrying on my head bread whereof the birds were eating. Tell us inform us of its interpretation for indeed we see you as being among the virtuous’.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Along with Yusuf, two young men serving in the court were dismissed and put in prison. Each of them had a dream. One of them saw himself pressing grapes to make wine and the other saw himself carrying bread on his head and the birds were eating therefrom. Impressed by Yusufs appearance which they thought was conformable to reason and piety, they asked him: Can you reveal to us the significance of these dreams! We do see you a man of piety and we see in you virtue in its true signification

Quran 12:36 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Two Jail Mates ask Yusuf to interpret their Dreams Qatadah said, "One of them was the king's distiller and the other was his baker." Each of these two men had a dream and asked Yusuf to interpret it for them.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(12:36) Two *31 other slaves also entered into the prison along with him. *32 One day one of them said, "I have dreamt that I am pressing grapes into wine," and the other said, "I have dreamt that I am carrying loaves of bread on my head, of which birds are eating. " Then both of them said, "Tell us their interpretations, for we have seen that you arc a righteous man. " *33

And there entered the prison with him meaning

*31) At the time when Prophet Joseph was sent to prison, probably he was about twenty years old.
This has been inferred from two statements in the Qur'an and the Talmud.
The Qur'an ( v.
42 )
says that `....he remained in the prison for a decade or so' and the Talmud says that `....Joseph was thirty years old when he was elevated to his honourable and trustworthy position' .

>*32) One of the two prisoners, according to the Bible, was the chief of the butlers of the king of Egypt, and the other the chief of the bakers.
And according to the Talmud, they were condemned to the prison because during a feast stone grits were found in the bread and a fly in the wine.

*33) The fact that two prisoners attested his righteousness shows that Prophet Joseph was held in high esteem in the prison.
Otherwise there was no reason why the two should have requested him alone to interpret the dreams and paid their homage like this: " We have seen that you are a righteous man ".
It clearly means that the events narrated in the preceding verses had reached all and sundry and the people inside the prison and outside it, knew that he had not been guilty of any crime or sin.
On the other hand, he had proved himself to be a noble soul who had come out successful in the hardest test of his piety.
So much so that there was not the like of him in piety, not even among their own religious leaders in the whole country.
That was why not only the prisoners but also the officers and officials of the prison looked upon him as an honourable man and had full confidence in him.
The Bible confirms this: " And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand. "
( Gen.
39: 22-23 )
.

Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi

Two Jail Mates ask Yusuf to interpret their Dreams Qatadah said, "One of them was the king's distiller and the other was his baker." Each of these two men had a dream and asked Yusuf to interpret it for them.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( And two young men ) two slaves of the king: his cupbearer and his cook-he got angry with them and put them in prison-( went to prison with him ) they stayed together five years. ( One of them ), the cupbearer, ( said: I dreamed that I was pressing wine ) pressing grapes to make wine and giving it to the king. This cupbearer saw in a dream that he entered a vineyard and there he saw a pleasant bough with three offshoots and on the offshoots bunches of grapes. He picked the grapes, pressed them and gave it to the King. Joseph said: As for the vineyard, it is the job you had; the bough represents the expertise you have in your job; its pleasantness represents your position and merit in that job. The three offshoots mean that you will be released in three days and shall return to your job. The pressed grapes you gave to the king means that he will give you your job back, honour you and treat you well. ( The other ) the cook, who prepared the king’s bread ( said I dreamed that I was carrying upon my head bread whereof the birds were eating ) he saw in his dream that he was coming out of the king’s kitchen carrying on his head three baskets of bread when birds came and ate from the bread on the baskets. Joseph said: You have seen an evil thing. As for your going out of the King’s kitchen, this means that you will lose your job; the three baskets means that you will stay in prison for three days. The birds eating from the baskets means that the king will get you out of prison in three days to crucify you and the birds will eat of your head. Before Joseph interpreted their dreams for them, the two men said to him: ( Announce unto us the interpretation ) interpret for us our dreams, ( for we see thee of those good ) towards the prisoners; it is also said that this means: you are of those who are truthful in their speech.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And there entered with him two young men in the prison. One of them said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." The other said: "Verily, I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head and birds were eating thereof." (They said): "Inform us of the interpretation of this. Verily, we think you are one of the Muhsinun (doers of good - see V. 2:112)."
