38:46 Indeed, We chose them for an exclusive quality: remembrance of the home [of the Hereafter].

Quran 38:46 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Assuredly We purified them with an exclusive thought namely the remembrance of the Abode of the Hereafter in other words to always remember it and to work for it a variant reading for bi-khālisatin dhikrā’l-dār has the genitive construction bi-khālisati dhikrā’l-dār making this dhikrā al-dār ‘remembrance of the Abode’ the explicative thereof.

The Chosen and the Best among the Prophets
Allah tells us about the virtues of His servants the Messengers and His Prophets:
وَاذْكُرْ عِبَادَنَآ إِبْرَهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ أُوْلِى الاٌّيْدِى وَالاٌّبْصَـرِ
( And remember Our servants, Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya`qub, Ulil-Aydi wal-Absar. ) meaning, righteous deeds, beneficial knowledge, strength in worship and insight.
`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
أُوْلِى الاٌّيْدِى
( Ulil-Aydi ) "Of great strength and worship;
وَالاٌّبْصَـرُ
( wal-Absar ) means, understanding of the religion." Qatadah and As-Suddi said, "They were given strength in worship and understanding of the religion."
إِنَّآ أَخْلَصْنَهُمْ بِخَالِصَةٍ ذِكْرَى الدَّارِ
( Verily, We did choose them by granting them the remembrance of the Abode. ) Mujahid said, "This means: We made them strive for the Hereafter, and there is nothing else for them besides that." As-Suddi also said, "The remembrance of the Hereafter and striving for it." Malik bin Dinar said, "Allah removed the love of this world from their hearts, and singled them out for land remembrance of the Hereafter." Qatadah said, "They used to remind the people about the Abode of the Hereafter and to strive for it."
وَإِنَّهُمْ عِندَنَا لَمِنَ الْمُصْطَفَيْنَ الاٌّخْيَارِ
( And they are with Us, verily, of the chosen and the best! ) means, they are among those who have been elected and chosen, and they are the best and the chosen ones.
وَاذْكُرْ إِسْمَـعِيلَ وَالْيَسَعَ وَذَا الْكِفْلِ وَكُلٌّ مِّنَ الاٌّخْيَارِ
( And remember Isma`il, Al-Yasa`, and Dhul-Kifl, all are among the best. ) We have already discussed their characteristics and stories in detail in Surat Al-Anbiya', may peace be upon them, and there is no need to repeat it here.
هَـذَا ذِكْرُ
( This is a Reminder ) means, a reminder to those who will be reminded.
As-Suddi said, "This means the Holy Qur'an."
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(38:46) Verily We exalted them in consideration of a sterling quality: their remembrance of the Abode of the Hereafter. *49
Indeed, We chose them for an exclusive meaning
*49) That is, "The real cause for their success and eminence was that there was no tinge of-worldliness in their character: all their efforts, mental and physical, were directed towards the Hereafter.
They remembered it themselves and urged others also to remember it.
That is why Allah exalted them to such high ranks as have never been attained by those who remained absorbed in earning worldly wealth and prosperity.
In this regard, one should also keep in view the subtle point that Allah here has only used the word ad-dar ( that abode, or the real abode ) for the Hereafter.
This is meant to impress the truth that this world is no abode for man, but only a passage and a rest house, which man has to Ieave in any cast.
The real abode is the abode of the Hereafter.
He who works to adorn that abode is the man of insight and such a one should inevitably be a commendable person in the sight of Allah.
As for him who in order to adorn his transitory abode in this rest house behaves in a way as to ruin his real abode in the Hereafter, is foolish, and naturally cannot be liked by Allah.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( Lo! We purified them with a pure thought ) We selected them, ( remembrance of the Home (of the Hereafter ) for the remembrance of Allah and the remembrance of the Hereafter.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Verily, We did choose them by granting them (a good thing, i.e.) the remembrance of the home [in the Hereafter and they used to make the people remember it, and also they used to invite the people to obey Allah and to do good deeds for the Hereafter].
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
