Quran 11:44 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And it was said ‘O earth swallow your waters that have sprung forth from you — and it reabsorbed it all except for what came down from the sky and formed rivers and seas — and O heaven abate!’ withhold the rain and it did. And the waters subsided decreased. And the affair was accomplished the matter of the destruction of Noah’s people was complete and it settled and the ship came to rest upon al-Jūdī a mountain in Mespotamia al-jazīra near Mosul; and it was said ‘Away with — perish — the evildoing the disbelieving folk!’

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

There and then was a divine command pronounced to the weather -beaten earth, thus: Engulf O earth your water and cease O heaven your rainfall, and the water subsided and the die was cast and the Ark rested securely upon Mount Judy -Gudy-*. and then it was said: Away with those wrongful of actions

Quran 11:44 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

The End of the Flood Allah, the Exalted, informs that when the people of the earth were all drowned, except for the people on the ship, He commanded the earth to swallow its water, which had sprang from it and gathered upon it.
Then He commanded the sky to cease raining. وَغِيضَ الْمَآءُ ( And the water was made to subside ) This means that it ( the water ) began to decrease. وَقُضِىَ الاٌّمْرُ ( and the decree was fulfilled. ) This means that all of those who disbelieved in Allah were removed from the people of the earth.
Not a single one of them remained upon the earth. وَاسْتَوَتْ ( And it (the ship ) rested) This is referring to the ship and those who were in it. عَلَى الْجُودِىِّ ( on (Mount ) Judi.) Mujahid said, "Judi is a mountain in Al-Jazirah ( Northwest Mesopotamia ) where the mountains sought to tower above each other on the day of the drowning.
On that day of destruction, all the mountains sought to be higher ( to avoid being overcome by the water ).
However, this mountain ( Judi ) humbled itself for Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and therefore it was not drowned.
This is why Nuh's ship anchored upon it." Qatadah said, "The ship rested upon it ( Mount Judi ) for a month before they ( the people ) came down from it.
" Qatadah also said, "Allah made Nuh's ship remain on Mount Judi in the land of Al-Jazirah, as a lesson and a sign." Even the early generations of this Ummah saw it.
How many ships are there that have come after it and have been destroyed and became dust وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ الظَّـلِمِينَ ( and it was said: "Away with the people who are wrongdoing!" ) means destruction and loss for them.
The term "away with" here implies being far away from the mercy of Allah.
For verily, they were destroyed to the last of them, and none of them survived.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(11:44) And the command was given: 'Earth! Swallow up your water'; and: 'Heaven! Abate!' So the water subsided, the command was fulfilled, and the Ark settled on Mount Judi, *46 and it was said: 'Away with the wrong-doing folk!'

And it was said, "O earth, swallow meaning

*46).
Mount Judi is situated to the north-east of the Island of Ibn 'Umar in Kurdistan.
According to the Bible, the Ark's resting place was Ararat, which is the name of a particular mountain as well as of a whole range of mountains in Armenia.
Ararat, in the sense of a mountain range, extends from the Armenian plateau to southern Kurdistan.
The mount called Judi is part of this range and is known even today by the same name.
In ancient historical accounts, Mount Judi is mentioned as the place where the Ark rested.
Around 250 B.C., a Babylonian priest, Berasus, wrote a history of his country based on Chaldean traditions.
He mentions Judi as the resting-place of Noah's Ark.
The history written by Abydenus, a disciple of Aristotle, also corroborates this.
Abydenus further remarks that many people in Mesopotamia possessed pieces of the Ark which they used as a charm.
They ground those pieces in water and gave the preparation to the sick so as to cure them of their ailments.

In connection with this great incident one is also faced with the question of whether the Flood was universal or whether it was limited to the area inhabited by the people of Noah.
This question remains unanswered to this day.
Under the influence of Israelite traditions, it is believed that it was a universal Flood ( Genesis 7: 18-24 ).
The Qur'an, however, does not explicitly say so.
There are several allusions in the Qur'an which indicate that subsequent generations of mankind are the descendants of those who were saved from the Flood.
But that does not necessarily mean that the Flood covered the whole world.
For, it is quite plausible that at that point in history the human population was confined only to the area which was overtaken by the Flood, and that those born after the Flood gradually dispersed to other parts of the world.

This view is supported by two things.
Firstly, ancient historical traditions, archaeological discoveries and geological data provide evidence that a great flood took place at some period in the distant past in the Tigris-Euphrates region.
There is no such evidence for a universal flood.
Secondly, traditions about a great flood have been popular among all communities of the world down the ages.
Such traditions are found even in the folklore of such distant regions as Australia, America and New Guinea.
One may thus conclude that at some time in the past the ancestors of all these communities lived together in some region which was overtaken by the Flood.
Since presumably their descendants subsequently dispersed to, and settled down in.
different parts of the world, they transmitted and preserved the traditions of this great Flood.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( And it was said: O earth! Swallow your water ) dry your water ( and, O sky! be cleared of clouds! ) stop your rain! ( And the water was made to subside. And the commandment was fulfilled ) the destruction of those people was accomplished, i.e. those who were supposed to be destroyed were destroyed and those who were supposed to be saved were saved. ( And it ) the ship ( came to rest upon (the mount ) Al-Judi) a mountain in Nisibin in the land of Mosul ( and it was said: A far removal ) from Allah’s mercy ( for wrong-doing folk! ) for the idolaters, the people of Noah.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And it was said: "O earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain)." And the water was diminished (made to subside) and the Decree (of Allah) was fulfilled (i.e. the destruction of the people of Nuh (Noah). And it (the ship) rested on Mount Judi, and it was said: "Away with the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing)!"
