English - Sahih International

41:50 And if We let him taste mercy from Us after an adversity which has touched him, he will surely say, "This is [due] to me, and I do not think the Hour will occur; and [even] if I should be returned to my Lord, indeed, for me there will be with Him the best." But We will surely inform those who disbelieved about what they did, and We will surely make them taste a massive punishment.

Quran 41:50 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And if wa-la-in the lām is for oaths We let him taste if We bestow on him mercy such as riches or good health from Us after the harm the hardship or tribulation that had befallen him he will surely say ‘This is my due! in other words it is on account of what I do. I do not think that the Hour will ever set in and even if wa-la-in the lām is for oaths I am returned to my Lord I will indeed have the best reward with Him’ namely Paradise. But We will assuredly inform those who disbelieve of what they did and assuredly We will make them taste a harsh chastisement the lām prefixed in both verbs is that for oaths.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

And if We should extend to man Our mercy and make him taste Our benefaction and benediction following what had befallen him of a misfortune, he ventures to say: This is the meritorious outcome of my thought which ran before my action and I doubt if the alleged Eventful Hour will ever present itself, and if I happen to be resurrected and return back to Allah, my Creator, there and then and at His hands shall I merit the desert of good. In effect there and then We will inform those who denied Allah, and refused to acknowledge His Omnipotence and Authority, of the detailed particulars of their life and We will subject them to a condign punishment which doubles their torment

Quran 41:50 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Man is fickle when Ease comes to Him after Difficulty Allah tells us that man never gets bored of asking his Lord for good things, such as wealth, physical health, etc., but if evil touches him -- i.e., trials and difficulties or poverty -- فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ ( then he gives up all hope and is lost in despair. ), i.e., he thinks that he will never experience anything good again. وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَـهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا مِن بَعْدِ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ هَـذَا لِى ( And truly, if We give him a taste of mercy from Us, after some adversity has touched him, he is sure to say: "This is due to my (merit )...") means, if something good happens to him or some provision comes to him after a period of difficulty, he says, `this is because of me, because I deserve this from my Lord.' وَمَآ أَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَائِمَةً ( I think not that the Hour will be established. ) means, he does not believe that the Hour will come.
So when he is given some blessing, he becomes careless, arrogant and ungrateful, as Allah says: كَلاَّ إِنَّ الإِنسَـنَ لَيَطْغَى - أَن رَّءَاهُ اسْتَغْنَى ( Nay! Verily, man does transgress.
Because he considers himself self-sufficient. )
( 96:6 ) وَلَئِن رُّجِّعْتُ إِلَى رَبِّى إِنَّ لِى عِندَهُ لَلْحُسْنَى ( But if I am brought back to my Lord, surely there will be for me the best with Him. ) means, `if there is a Hereafter after all, then my Lord will be generous and kind to me just as He was in this world.' So he expects Allah to do him favors in spite of his bad deeds and lack of certain faith.
Allah says: فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُمْ مِّنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ ( Then, We verily will show to the disbelievers what they have done, and We shall make them taste a severe torment. ) Thus Allah threatens punishment and vengeance to those whose conduct and belief is like that. وَإِذَآ أَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى الإنْسَـنِ أَعْرَضَ وَنَأَى بِجَانِبِهِ ( And when We show favor to man, he turns away and becomes arrogant; ) means, he turns away from doing acts of obedience and is too proud to obey the commands of Allah.
This is like the Ayah: فَتَوَلَّى بِرُكْنِهِ ( But Fir`awn turned away along with his hosts ) ( 51:39 ). وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ ( but when evil touches him, ) means, difficulties, فَذُو دُعَآءٍ عَرِيضٍ ( then he has recourse to long supplications. ) means, he asks at length for one thing.
Long supplications are those which are long on words and short on meaning.
The opposite is concise speech which is brief but full of meaning.
And Allah says: وَإِذَا مَسَّ الإِنسَـنَ الضُّرُّ دَعَانَا لِجَنبِهِ أَوْ قَاعِدًا أَوْ قَآئِمًا فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُ ضُرَّهُ مَرَّ كَأَن لَّمْ يَدْعُنَآ إِلَى ضُرٍّ مَّسَّهُ ( And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying on his side, or sitting or standing.
But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him! )
( 10:12 )

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(41:50) And if We bestow Our Mercy upon him after hardship, he will surely say: 'This is what I truly deserve, *66 and I do not believe that the Hour (of Resurrection) will ever come to pass; and if I am returned to my Lord, there too I shall enjoy the best.' Surely We shall fully apprise the unbelievers of what they have done, and We shall certainly make them taste a severe chastisement.

And if We let him taste mercy meaning

*66) That is 'I have got all this because of my being worthy of it :it is my right that I should receive all this."

Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi

( 10:12 )

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( And verily, if We cause him to taste mercy ) through wealth and offspring ( after some hurt that hath touched him ) after being touched by some hardship, ( he will say: This is my own ) because of some goodness which Allah knows that I have in me; ( and I deem not that the Hour will ever rise ) as claimed by Muhammad ( pbuh ); thus denying the resurrection, ( and if I am brought back to my Lord ) as Muhammad ( pbuh ) says, ( I surely shall be ) in the Hereafter ( better off with Him ) I will enter Paradise; this is what ’Utbah Ibn Rabi’ah and his host said. ( But We verily shall tell those who disbelieve (all ) that they did) in their state of disbelief, ( and We verily shall make them taste hard punishment ) a severe punishment in hell: one sort of punishment after another.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And truly, if We give him a taste of mercy from us, after some adversity (severe poverty or disease, etc.) has touched him, he is sure to say: "This is for me (due to my merit), I think not that the Hour will be established. But if I am brought back to my Lord, Surely, there will be for me the best (wealth, etc.) with Him. Then, We verily, will show to the disbelievers what they have done and We shall make them taste a severe torment.
