Quran 7:53 Surah Araf ayat 53 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
7:53 Do they await except its result? The Day its result comes those who had ignored it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth, so are there [now] any intercessors to intercede for us or could we be sent back to do other than we used to do?" They will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

Quran 7:53 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Are they waiting — they are not waiting — for anything but its fulfilment the consequences of what is in it? On the day when its fulfilment comes which will be on the Day of Resurrection those who were forgetful of it before those who neglected to believe in it shall say ‘Indeed our Lord’s messengers came with the truth. Have we then any intercessors that they may intercede for us or shall we be returned to the world that we may act otherwise than we used to act?’ and instead affirm God’s Oneness and refrain from associating others with Him. It will then be said to them ‘No!’ God exalted be He says Verily they have lost their souls for they have ended up in perdition and that which they used to invent in alleging that God has a partner has failed has abandoned them.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Do they -the infidels- purpose to wait until fitting events fulfill the prophecies and all that has been promised in the Book! But when such overwhelming events present themselves shall those who had disregarded the promise and willfully neglected it say: Indeed; now we do realize that the Messengers of Allah had brought us the truth which dawned on us with illumination and enlightenment. Are there intercessors to intercede for us or can we be permitted to go back to life below to decide more wisely, think better than what our minds and souls had impelled us to do! Indeed they have lost their own souls and have been forsaken and renounced by those whom they presumed to share with Allah His divine nature, who failed their expectation
Quran 7:53 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Idolators have no Excuse
Allah states that He has left no excuse for the idolators, for He has sent to them the Book that the Messenger came with, and which is explained in detail,
( (This is ) a Book, the Ayat whereof are perfected ( in every sphere of knowledge ), and then explained in detail ) 11:1 Allah said next,
( We have explained in detail with knowledge ) meaning, `We have perfect knowledge of what We explained in it'.
Allah said in another Ayah,
( He has sent it down with His Knowledge, ) 4:166 The meaning here is that after Allah mentioned the loss the idolators end up with in the Hereafter, He stated that He has indeed sent Prophets and revealed Books in this life, thus leaving no excuse for them.
Allah also said;
( And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (to give warning ).) 17:15 This is why Allah said here,
( Await they just for the final fulfillment of the event ) in reference to what they were promised of torment, punishment, the Fire; or Paradise, according to Mujahid and several others.
( On the Day the event is finally fulfilled, ) on the Day of Resurrection, according to Ibn `Abbas,
( those who neglected it before will say ) those who ignored it in this life and neglected abiding by its implications will say,
( "Verily, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth, now are there any intercessors for us that they might intercede on our behalf" ) so that we are saved from what we ended up in.
( "Or could we be sent back" ), to the first life,
( "So that we might do (good ) deeds other than those ( evil ) deeds which we used to do").
This part of the Ayah is similar to Allah's statement,
( If you could but see when they will be held over the (Hell ) Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!" Nay, it has become manifest to them what they had been concealing before.
But if they were returned ( to the world ), they would certainly revert to that which they were forbidden.
And indeed they are liars) 6:27-28 Allah said here,
( Verily, they have lost themselves and that which they used to fabricate has gone away from them. ) meaning, they destroyed themselves by entering the Fire for eternity,
( And that which they used to fabricate has gone away from them. ) What they used to worship instead of Allah abandoned them and will not intercede on their behalf, aid them or save them from their fate.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(7:53) Are they waiting for the fulfilment of its warning? *38 On the Day that warning is fulfilled, those that have neglected it before will say: 'The Messengers of Our Lord did indeed bring forth the truth. Are there any intercessors who will now plead on our behalf? Or, can we be restored to life that we might perform differently from that which we did? ' *39 They surely ended in utter loss, and the lies they had fabricated failed them.
Do they await except its result? The meaning
*38).
The position of the people in question is as follows.
The difference between good and evil was first explained to them, and yet they turned a deaf ear to it.
Then some people established a good example by following the right path notwithstanding the dominant trend towards error.
The wholesome effect of righteous conduct became evident from the lives of such people, but it made no impression on the people concerned.
Their persistence in error could only mean one thing: that they would only learn the lesson the hard way when they saw the painful effects of their error.
Such people are like stupid patients who neither follow the directions of the physician, nor learn any lesson from their own observations of the many patients who have been cured of their diseases by following the directions of physicians.
Thesc people will realize - if they realize at all - on their death-bed that their ways were foolish and fatal.
*39).
Such people will long to return to the world, pleading that they will believe in the truth which they had rejected since they have now witnessed it.
They will also ensure that their attitude will be different from that which had been before.
For a fuller discussion of this plea and the rejoinder to it see al-An'am 6: 27-8; Ibrahim 14: 44 and 45; al-Sajdah 32: 12-13; al-Fatir 35: 37; al-Zumar 39: 56-9; and al-Mu'min 40: 11-12.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( Await they ) what do the people of Mecca wait for when they have refused to believe ( aught save the fulfilment thereof ) the consequence of what Allah has promised them in the Qur’an? ( On the day ) which is the Day of Judgement ( when the fulfilment thereof ) when the consequence of what Allah has promised them in the Qur’an ( cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof ) those who did not believe in it in the life of this world ( will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! ) with the exposition of the resurrection, Paradise and hell but we denied all. ( Have we any intercessors, that they may intercede for us ) to avoid the torment? ( Or can we be returned ) to life on earth, ( that we may act ) that we may believe and act ( otherwise than we used to act ) of idolatry? ( They have lost their souls ) by missing Paradise and abiding in hell, ( and that which they devised ) that which they worshipped falsely ( hath failed them ).
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Await they just for the final fulfillment of the event? On the Day the event is finally fulfilled (i.e. the Day of Resurrection), those who neglected it before will say: "Verily, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth, now are there any intercessors for us that they might intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back (to the first life of the world) so that we might do (good) deeds other than those (evil) deeds which we used to do?" Verily, they have lost their ownselves (i.e. destroyed themselves) and that which they used to fabricate (invoking and worshipping others besides Allah) has gone away from them.
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
