English - Sahih International

39:6 He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

Quran 39:6 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

He created you from a single soul namely Adam then made from it its mate Eve; and He sent down for you of the cattle of camels cows small cattle sheep and goats eight kinds of each kind a male and a female — as He makes clear in sūrat al-An‘ām Q. 6143f.. He creates you in your mothers’ wombs creation after creation that is to say as a sperm-drop then a blood clot then a foetus in a threefold darkness that is the darkness of the belly that of the womb and that of the placenta. That is God your Lord. To Him belongs all sovereignty. There is no god except Him. Why then are you being turned away? from worshipping Him to worshipping things other than Him?

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

He is it Who brought you all into being from one single soul -Adam-and from him did He, by special creation, evolve his mate Eve* And He supplied you with eight heads of cattle -males and females- (sheep, goats, oxen and camels). He forms you in the wombs within your mothers bellies varying your constitution in stages of development one stage after another (from rudimentary to complete state) in the depth of darkness environed by three superimposed dark compartments This is Allah your Creator, Who has the rightful claim to the sovereign authority, there is no Ilah but Him and so how could you reject Him in favour of other objects of worship

Quran 39:6 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Evidence of the Power and Oneness of Allah Allah tells us that He is the Creator of what is in the heavens and on earth, and what is between them.
He is the Sovereign and Controller alternating the night and day. يُكَوِّرُ الَّيْـلَ عَلَى النَّهَـارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّـهَارَ عَلَى الَّيْلِ ( He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night. ) means, He has subjugated them and He causes them to alternate without ceasing, each seeking the other rapidly, as He says: يُغْشِى الَّيْلَ النَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُ حَثِيثًا ( He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly ) ( 7:54 ).
This is the meaning of that which was narrated from Ibn `Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid, Qatadah, As-Suddi and others. وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّـى ( And He has subjected the sun and the moon.
Each running for an appointed term. )
means, for a period of time that is known to Allah, then it will come to an end on the Day of Resurrection. أَلا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ ( Verily, He is the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving. ) means, beside His might, greatness and pride, He is Oft-Forgiving to those who disobey Him but then turn to Him in repentance. خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ ( He created you (all ) from a single person;) means, He created you, with all your varied races, types, languages and colors, from a single soul, who was Adam, peace be upon him. ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا ( then made from him his wife. ) who was Hawwa', peace be upon her.
This is like the Ayah: يَـأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالاً كَثِيراً وَنِسَآءً ( O mankind! Have Taqwa of your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his wife, and from them both He created many men and women ) ( 4:1 ). وَأَنزَلَ لَكُمْ مِّنَ الاٌّنْعَـمِ ثَمَـنِيَةَ أَزْوَجٍ ( And He has sent down for you of cattle eight pairs. ) means, He has created for you from among the cattles, eight pairs.
These are the ones that are mentioned in Surat Al-An`am, eight kinds -- a pair of sheep, a pair of goats, a pair of camels and a pair of oxen. يَخْلُقُكُمْ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـتِكُـمْ ( He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, ) means, He forms you in your mothers' wombs. خَلْقاً مِّن بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ ( creation after creation ).
Everyone of you is originally a Nutfah, then he becomes an `Alaqah, then he becomes a Mudghah, then he is created and becomes flesh and bones and nerves and veins, and the Ruh ( soul ) is breathed into him, and he becomes another type of creation. فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَـلِقِينَ ( So Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators ) ( 23:14 ). فِى ظُلُمَـتٍ ثَلَـثٍ ( in three veils of darkness ) means, in the darkness of the womb, the darkness of the placenta which blankets and protects the child, and the darkness of the belly.
This was the view of Ibn `Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Abu Malik, Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah, As-Suddi and Ibn Zayd. ذَلِكُـمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّـكُمْ ( Such is Allah your Lord. ) means, the One Who created the heavens and the earth and everything in between, and created you and your forefathers, is the Lord.
To Him belong sovereignty and control over all of that. لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ ( La ilaha illa Huwa. ) means, no one else should be worshipped except Him alone with no partner or associate. فَأَنَّى تُصْرَفُونَ ( How then are you turned away ) means, how can you worship anything besides Him What has happened to your minds

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(39:6) He it is Who created you from a single being, and He it is Who made from it its mate. *12 He it is Who created for you eight heads of cattle in pairs. *13 He creates you in your mothers' wombs, giving you one form after another in threefold depths of darkness. *14 That, then, is Allah, your Lord. *15 His is the kingdom. *16 There is no god but He. *17 So, whence are you being turned astray? *18

He created you from one soul. Then meaning

*12) This dces not mean that first He created the human beings from Adam and then created his wife, Eve.
But here, instead of the chronological order, there is the order of presentation, examples of which arc found in every language.
For instance, we say, " Whatever you did today is known to me, and whatever you did yesterday is also in my knowledge. " This cannot mean that what happened yesterday has happened after today.

*13) That is, the camel, cow, sheep and goat whose four males and four females together make eight heads of cattle.

*14) The three dark veils are: the belly, the womb and the caul or membrane enclosing the foetus.

*15) " Your Lord " : your Master, Ruler and Providence.

*16) That is, " All powers and authority rest with Him and it is He Who is ruling over the whole Universe.
"

>*17) In other words, the reasoning is this: " When Allah alone is your Lord and His is the sovereignty, then inevitably your Deity also is He.
How can another be your deity when he has neither any share in providence nor any role in sovereignty? After all, how can it be reasonable for you to take others as your deities when Allah alone is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, when Allah alone has subjected the sun and the moon for you, when He alone brings the day after the night and the night after the day, and when He alone is your own Creator and Lord as well as of all animals and cattle? "

*18) These words need deep consideration.
It has not been said: " Where are you turning away? " but 'where are you being turned away?" That is, "There is someone else who is misleading you, and being thus deceived you do not understand such a simple and reasonable thing.
" The other thing which by itself becomes evident from the style is: The word "you" is not addressed to the agents but to those who were turning away under their influence.
Their is a subtle point in this which can be understood easily after a little thought.
Those who were working to turn away others ( from the Right Way ) were present in the same society and were doing whatever they could openly and publicly.
Therefore, there was no need to mention them by name.
It was also useless to address them, for they were trying to turn away the people from the service of Allah, the One, and entrapping them for the service of others, and keeping them entrapped for selfish motives.
Obviously, such people could not be made to see reason by argument, for it lay in their own interest not' to understand and see reason, and even after understanding they could hardly be inclined to sacrifice their interests.
However, the condition of the common people who were being deceived and cheated, was certainly pitiable.
They had no interest involved in the business; therefore, they could be convinced by reasoning and argument, and after a little understanding they could also see what advantages were being gained by those who were showing them the way to other deities, after turning them away from Allah.
That is why the address has been directed to the common people, who were being misguided rather than those few who were misguiding them.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( He created you from one being ) from the being of Adam alone, ( then from that (being )) i.e. from Adam ( He made its mate ) Eve, He created her from one of Adam’s shorter ribs; ( and He hath provided for you of cattle eight kinds ) of sheep: a male and a female; of goat: a male and a female; of camel: a male and a female; of bovines: a male and a female. ( He created you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation ) a state after another: a sperm drop then a blood clot then a piece of flesh and then bones, ( in a threefold gloom ) the darkness of the belly, the darkness of the womb and the darkness of the placenta. ( Such is Allah, your Lord ) Who does this. ( His is the Sovereignty ) which is perpetual and never ending. ( There is no God save Him ) there is no Creator or Fashioner except Him. ( How then are ye turned away ) How then do you lie against Him and ascribe partners to Him?

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

He created you (all) from a single person (Adam); then made from him his wife [Hawwa' (Eve)]. And He has sent down for you of cattle eight pairs (of the sheep, two, male and female; of the goats, two, male and female; of the oxen, two, male and female; and of the camels, two, male and female). He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation in three veils of darkness, such is Allah your Lord. His is the kingdom, La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). How then are you turned away?
