[ التوبة: 61]
9:61 And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allah and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who abuse the Messenger of Allah - for them is a painful punishment.

Quran 9:61 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And of them the hypocrites are those who injure the Prophet by casting aspersions on him and communicating to others what he says in confidence saying when they are forbidden from doing this lest it should reach him ‘He is only a listener!’ that is he listens to anything that is said and accepts it so that when we swear to him that we have not communicated to others a particular thing he believes us. Say he is ‘A listener who listens to good for you and not one who listens to evil one who believes in God and has faith he trusts in the believers in what they inform him and not in others the lām of li’l-mu’minīna ‘in the believers’ has been added to distinguish between belief in the sense of ‘submitting to God’ islām and in other senses such as ‘trusting’ and who is a mercy read rahmatun in the nominative as a supplement to udhunun ‘a listener’ or rahmatin in the genitive as a supplement to khayrin ‘to good’ to those of you who believe. Those who injure God’s Messenger for them there is a painful chastisement’.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Among these hypocrites are also those who prejudice the Prophet and label him: all ears. He attentively listens to all that is being said, be it false or true; he is easily deceived. Say to them: He bows down his ear and listens graciously to all that is of advantage to you; he believes those whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand and he is not deceived by those whom he perceives are lying. He solemnly believes in Allah and trusts those whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand for whom he is Allahs given mercy. Indeed those who prejudice the Prophet shall suffer the torment laid upon the damned
Quran 9:61 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Hypocrites annoy the Prophet
Allah says, some hypocrites bother the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by questioning his character, saying,
هُوَ أُذُنٌ
( he is (lending his ) ear), to those who say anything about us; he believes whoever talks to him.
Therefore, if we went to him and swore, he would believe us.
Similar was reported from Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid and Qatadah.
Allah said,
قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ
( Say: "He listens to what is best for you" ), he knows who's saying the truth and who is lying,
يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
( he believes in Allah; has faith in the believers ), he believes the believers,
وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنكُمْ
( and is a mercy to those of you who believe" ), and a proof against the disbelievers,
وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
( But those who annoy Allah's Messenger, will have a painful torment. )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(9:61) There are some among them who injure the Prophet and say, "This man readily believes whatever he hears.', *69 Say, "It is good for you that he is so: *70 He believes in Allah and puts his trust in the believers *71 and is a blessing for those who are true believers among you. As regards those who injure the Messenger of Allah, there is a painful chastisement for them."
And among them are those who abuse meaning
*69) This was one of the charges which the hypocrites levelled against the Holy Prophet.
As he used to listen to everyone and Iet him say freely whatever he had to say, they would find fault with him, saying, " He is a credulous person.
Everyone can approach him freely and may say whatever he pleases, and he readily believes whatever he hears! " Though it was a good thing that he heard everyone, the hypocrites intentionally spread it as a vice, so that the poor and humble Muslims should be kept away from coming near the Holy Prophet.
The hypocrites did not like that these true Believers should inform the Holy Prophet about their plots, mischiefs and hostile talks.
They resented it very much that the Holy Prophet listened to and believed in the talk of these humble people against such " respectable " people as they.
*70) The answer to this charge implies two things.
First, " Though the Prophet listens to everything, he attends only to that which is good and is for the welfare of the Community, for he is not the one who would listen to or encourage mischievous things. " Secondly, " It is good for yourselves that he listens patently to everyone; otherwise he would not have allowed you to put forward lame excuses for your negligence from the struggle in the Way of Allah.
Had he not been forbearing, he would not have paid attention to your false professions of faith and hypocritical expressions of good wishes for Islam, but would have taken you to task for your mischiefs and made it difficult for you to live at AI-Madinah.
It is thus obvious that it is good for you that he listens to everyone. "
*71) That is, " You are wrong that he listens to everyone.
He puts his trust only in the true Believers.
Accordingly, he believed only in those things about you that were conveyed to him by good and trustworthy people, who were neither liars nor tale-bearers.
Therefore, whatever they said about you was true and should leave been taken as true. "

( And of them ) of the hypocrites: Judham Ibn Khalid, Iyyas Ibn Qays, Sammak Ibn Yazid and ’Ubayd Ibn Malik ( are those who vex the Prophet ) by slandering and vilifying him ( and say ) to one another: ( He is only a hearer ) he listens to us and believes us when we tell him we have not said anything against you. ( Say ) to them, O Muhammad: ( A hearer of good ) and not evil ( for you ) i.e. he listens to you and believes what is good rather than believes that you are lying; it is also said that this means: if he is a hearer, then it is good for you, ( who believeth in Allah ) he believes in the word of Allah ( and is true to the believers ) and he believes the word of sincere believers, ( and a mercy ) preventing from torment ( for such of you as believe ) both inwardly and outwardly. ( Those who vex the Messenger of Allah ) by not joining him at the Battle of Tabuk. The reference here is to Jallas Ibn Suwayd, Sammak Ibn ’Amr, Mikhsha’ Ibn Humayr and their host, ( for them there is a painful doom ) in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.

And among them are men who hurt the Prophet (Muhammad SAW) and say: "He is (lending his) ear (to every news)." Say: "He listens to what is best for you; he believes in Allah; has faith in the believers; and is a mercy to those of you who believe." But those who hurt Allah's Messenger (Muhammad SAW) will have a painful torment.
