Quran 12:68 Surah Yusuf ayat 68 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
12:68 And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allah at all except [it was] a need within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.

Quran 12:68 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
God exalted be He says And when they entered in the manner which their father had bidden them that is separately it did not avail them anything min shay’in min is extra against God that is against His decree; it was but a need in Jacob’s soul which he thus satisfied and this need was his desire to fend off the evil eye from them out of affection for them. And verily he was possessed of knowledge because We had taught him; but most of mankind — and they are the disbelievers — do not know about God’s inspiring His elect.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Albeit they entered in the manner conformable to their fathers advice, it did not mean that they would have escaped a misfortune decreed by Allah, but it was only a notion in Yaqubs mind wherefore his reason was satisfied. He was imbued with divine knowledge We had imparted to him, but most people are not so imbued nor do they perceive this fact
Quran 12:68 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Ya`qub orders His Children to enter Egypt from Different Gates
Allah says that Ya`qub, peace be upon him, ordered his children, when he sent Binyamin with them to Egypt, to enter from different gates rather than all of them entering from one gate.
Ibn `Abbas, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Mujahid, Ad-Dahhak Qatadah, As-Suddi and several others said that he feared the evil eye for them, because they were handsome and looked beautiful and graceful.
He feared that people might direct the evil eye at them, because the evil eye truly harms, by Allah's decree, and brings down the mighty warrior-rider from his horse.
He next said, l
( and I cannot avail you against Allah at all. ) this precaution will not resist Allah's decision and appointed decree.
Verily, whatever Allah wills, cannot be resisted or stopped,
( "Verily, the decision rests only with Allah.
In Him, I put my trust and let all those that trust, put their trust in Him." And when they entered according to their father's advice, it did not avail them in the least against (the will of ) Allah; it was but a need of Ya`qub's inner self which he discharged.
), as a precaution against the evil eye,
( And verily, he was endowed with knowledge because We had taught him, ) he had knowledge that he implemented, according to Qatadah and Ath-Thawri.
Ibn Jarir said that this part of the Ayah means, he has knowledge that We taught him,
( but most men know not. )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(12:68) However know it well that I cannot ward off from you Allah's will for none other than He has any authority whatsoever. In Him I have put my trust and all who want to rely upon anyone should put their trust in Him alone. " And it so happened that when they entered the city by different gates as their father had advised them the precautionary measure proved ineffective against Allah's will. Of course Jacob had done his best to avert the fear he had in his heart. Indeed he possessed knowledge because of what We had taught him: but most people do not understand the reality of the matter. *54
And when they entered from where their meaning
*54) " Most people do not understand.

" how Prophet Jacob was able to hold the balance between " trust in Allah " and adoption of precautionary measures.
This was because Allah had favoured him with the real knowledge.
That was why he took all those measures which were dictated by common sense, deep thinking and experience.
He admonished them for their ill treatment with their brother Joseph so that they should not dare repeat it in the case of Benjamin.
He took a solemn pledge from them in the name of AIlah that they would take good care of the safety of their step-brother.
Then he advised them to be on their guard against the dangerous political situation and to enter the capital by different gates so as not to give cause for alarm and suspicion.
In short, as far as it was humanly possible, he took all the precautionary measures to avoid every possible risk.
On the other hand, he always kept this thing in view ( and expressed it ) that no human precautionary measure could avert the enforcement of Allah's will, and that the real protection was Allah's protection: and that one should not rely on the precautionary measures but on the favour of AIlah.
Obviously only that person who has the real knowledge can keep such a balance in his words and deeds, who knows what kind of efforts are demanded of his human faculties bestowed by Allah for the solution of worldly problems, who also realizes that it is Allah alone Who has the power to make them a success or a failure.
This is " what most people do not understand " .
Some of them rely merely on their efforts and measures and discard trust in Allah; while there are others who rely merely on " trust in AIlah " and do not adopt any practical measure to solve their problem.

( And when they entered ) Egypt ( in the manner which their father had enjoined ) as their father commanded them, ( it would have naught availed them as against Allah ) against what Allah had decreed for them; ( it was but a need of Jacob’s soul ) in Jacob’s heart ( which he thus satisfied ) which he expressed; ( and lo! He ) i.e. Jacob ( was a lord of knowledge ) of remembrance ( because We had taught him ) of that which We taught him of legal rulings, punishments, decree and destiny; he knew that nothing happens except what Allah decrees; ( but most of mankind ) the people of Egypt ( know not ) this nor believe in it.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
