Surah Tawbah ayat 69 Tafsir Quran 9:69

﴿كَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوا أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَالًا وَأَوْلَادًا فَاسْتَمْتَعُوا بِخَلَاقِهِمْ فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَاقِكُمْ كَمَا اسْتَمْتَعَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَاقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُوا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ﴾
[ التوبة: 69]

9:69 [You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged. [It is] those whose deeds have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.

You O hypocrites are like those before you who were far mightier than you and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their share their lot in this world. So you enjoy O hypocrites your share just as those before you enjoyed their share and you indulge in vain talk in falsehood and defamation of the Prophet s just as they indulged in vain talk. Those their works have become invalid in this world and in the Hereafter; and those they indeed are the losers.

You hypocrites stand similitude exact of those who preceded you. They were mightier than you are and they lived in greater affluence of wealth and progeny. They enjoyed all that afforded pleasure and was of sensuous character and they neglected all that was dutiful to Allah. Similarly you enjoy all that affords pleasure and is of sensuous character in the same way as those who preceded you; you plunged into worldly ambition the same as they plunged themselves into defaming religion and disobeying Allah. You and such persons are those whose hopes shall be doomed to disappointment and their deeds to worthlessness here and Hereafter, and all of you were born to be losers

بِخَلَـقِهِمْ ( their portion ), means, they mocked their religion, according to Al-Hasan Al-Basri.
Allah's statement, وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُواْ ( and you indulged in play and pastime as they indulged in play and pastime ), indulged in lies and falsehood, أُوْلَـئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـلُهُمْ ( Such are they whose deeds are in vain ), their deeds are annulled; they will not acquire any rewards for them because they are invalid, فِي الدنْيَا وَالاٌّخِرَةِ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْخَـسِرُونَ ( in this world and in the Hereafter.
Such are they who are the losers. ) because they will not acquire any rewards for their actions.
Ibn `Abbas commented, "How similar is this night to the last night, كَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ ( Like those before you... ) These are the Children of Israel, with whom we were compared.
The Prophet said,
«وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتَتَّبِعُنَّهُمْ حَتَّى لَوْ دَخَلَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْهُمْ جُحْرَ ضَبَ لَدَخَلْتُمُوه»
( By He in Whose Hand is my life! You will imitate them, and even if a man of them entered the den of a lizard, you will enter it likewise! )" Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
«وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتَتَّبِعُنَّ سَنَنَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ شِبْرًا بِشِبْرٍ وَذِرَاعًا بِذِرَاعٍ، وَبَاعًا بِبَاعٍ حَتَّى لَوْ دَخَلُوا جُحْرَ ضَبَ لَدَخَلْتُمُوه»
قالوا: ومن هم يا رسول الله، أهل الكتاب؟ قال:
«فَمَنْ؟»
( By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will follow the traditions of those who were before you a hand span for a hand-span and forearm's length for forearm's length, and an arm's length for an arm's length.
And even if they enter the den of a lizard, you will also enter it. ) They asked, "Who, O Allah's Messenger, the People of the Book" He said, ( Who else )" This Hadith is similar to another Hadith collected in the Sahih.

(9:69) You are behaving *76 just like those who went before you: they had more power than you, and possessed greater riches and had more children than you: they had enjoyed their portion of the good things of the worldly life and you, too, have enjoyed your portion of the good things like them: you are also engaged in idle discussions like the discussions they held. Consequently in the end everything they did, proved vain in this world and shall be vain in the Next World: surely they are the people who are the losers.

[You disbelievers are] like those before you; meaning

*76) In the preceding verse, they were being mentioned in the third person, but here they are being addressed directly in the second person.

( Even as those ) even as the punishment of those ( before you ) of hypocrites who ( were mightier than you in strength ) physically, ( and more affluent than you in wealth and children. They enjoyed their lot awhile ) they expend their share of the Hereafter in the life of this world, ( so ye enjoy your lot awhile ) you expended your share of the Hereafter in the life of this world ( even as those before you ) of hypocrites ( did enjoy ) expend ( their lot awhile ) their share of the Hereafter in the life of this world. ( And ye prate ) speak falsehood ( even as they prated ) and inwardly gave the lie to Muhammad ( pbuh ) just as those before them indulged in falsehood and gave the lie to the prophets of Allah. ( Such are they whose works have perished ) their good works have been thwarted ( in the world and the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers ) in that they will face punishment.

Like those before you, they were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion awhile, so enjoy your portion awhile as those before you enjoyed their portion awhile; and you indulged in play and pastime (and in telling lies against Allah and His Messenger Muhammad SAW) as they indulged in play and pastime. Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers.
