Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

And it is Allah Who made the trees and other objects He created cast shadows* when they intercept light to protect you from the scorching heat of the sun and He hollowed out for you caves in the hills and the mountains to shelter you and He equipped you with garments to protect you from the heat and other garments -armours- to shield you from the weapons when you contend in warfare. Thus does Allah mean to make all grace abound in you that you may hopefully conform to Islam

Quran 16:81 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Homes, Furnishings and Clothing are also Blessings from Allah Allah mentions His great blessings for His servant in that He has given them homes to dwell in and protect themselves with, in which they find all kinds of benefits.
He has also given them homes from the hides of cattle, i.e., leather, which are light and easy to carry on journeys and can be erected wherever they stop, whether they are traveling or are settled.
Thus Allah says: تَسْتَخِفُّونَهَا يَوْمَ ظَعْنِكُمْ وَيَوْمَ إِقَـمَتِكُمْ ( which you find so light when you travel and when you camp; ) وَمِنْ أَصْوَافِهَا وَأَوْبَارِهَا وَأَشْعَارِهَآ ( out of their wool, fur and hair ) refers to sheep, camels and goats respectively. أَثَـثاً ( furnishings ) meaning what you take from them, i.e., wealth.
It was also said that it means articles of convenience, or clothing.
The correct view is more general in meaning than this; it means that you make carpets, clothing and other things from their wool, hair etc., which you use as wealth and for trade.
Ibn `Abbas said: `Al-Athath means articles of convenience and comfort." This was also the view of Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Al-Hasan, `Atiyah Al-`Awfi, `Ata' Al-Khurasani, Ad-Dahhak and Qatadah.
The phrase, إِلَى حِينٍ ( for a while ) means, until the appointed time. Shade, Places of Refuge in the Mountains, Garments and Coats of Mail are also Blessings from Allah وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِّمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَـلاً ( And Allah has made shade for you out of that which He has created, ) Qatadah said: "This means trees." وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِّنَ الْجِبَالِ أَكْنَـناً ( and He has made places of refuge in the mountains for you, ) meaning fortresses and strongholds. جَعَلَ لَكُمُسَرَابِيلَ تَقِيكُمُ الْحَرَّ ( and He has made garments for you to protect you from the heat, ) meaning clothing of cotton, linen and wool. وَسَرَبِيلَ تَقِيكُم بَأْسَكُمْ ( and coats of mail to protect you from your violence. ) such as shields made of layers of sheet iron, coats of mail and so on. كَذَلِكَ يُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ ( Thus does He perfect His favor for you, ) meaning, thus He gives you what you need to go about your business, so that this will help you to worship and obey Him. لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْلِمُونَ ( that you may submit yourselves to His will ).
This is interpreted by the majority to mean submitting to Allah or becoming Muslim. All the Messenger has to do is convey the Message فَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ ( Then, if they turn away, ) meaning, after this declaration and reminder, do not worry about them. فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ الْبَلَـغُ الْمُبِينُ ( your duty (O Muhammad ) is only to convey ( the Message ) in a clear way), and you have delivered the Message to them. يَعْرِفُونَ نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُنكِرُونَهَا ( They recognize the grace of Allah, yet they deny it ) meaning they know that Allah is the One Who grants these blessings to them, and that He is Bountiful towards them, but they still deny this by worshipping others besides Him and thinking that their help and provisions come from others besides Him. وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ الْكَـفِرُونَ ( and most of them are disbelievers.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(16:81) Allah has made for you from the many things He has created shelter from the sun. He has created for you places of refuge in the mountains and blessed you with such garments as protect you from heat *76 and garments which shield you in your fights. *77 Thus He perfects His blessings on you, *78 so that you should submit to Him.

And Allah has made for you, from meaning

*76) The Qur'an has not mentioned protection from cold for either of the two reasons: ( 1 ) Because the use of garments in the summer season is a symbol of cultural perfection and obviously there is no need to mention the lower stages of culture.
Or ( 2 ) the use of garments in hot countries has specially been mentioned because the main use of garments there is for protection from the hot pestilential furious wind.
Therefore, one has to cover one's head, neck, ears, and the whole of ones body to protect it from the hot wind which would otherwise scorch one to death.

*77) That is, " Armour ".

*78) " He perfects His blessings on you ": AIIah makes provision for the minutest needs and necessities of every aspect of human life.
For example, Iet us take the instance of the protection of the human body from external influences.
We fmd that Allah has made such elaborate arrangements as require a complete book to relate them.
These arrangements reach their perfection in the case of clothing and housing arrangement.
Or, if we consider the food requirements we realize that it is of many varieties which fulfil every need.
More than this: the means Allah has provided for food requirements of man are so numerous that the list of the varieties and the names of different kinds of food require a big volume.
This is the perfection of the blessing of food.
Likewise, one would see perfection of the blessings of Allah in the fulfillment of each and every human need and necessity.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( And Allah hath given you, of that which He hath created ) from trees, gardens and mountains, ( shelter from the sun ) from heat; ( and hath given you places of refuge ) caves and grottos ( in the mountains, and hath given you coats to ward off the heat from you ) in the summer and cold in the winter, ( and coats (of armour ) to save you from your own foolhardiness) from the arms of your own enemies. ( Thus doth He perfect His favour unto you, in order that ye may surrender (unto Him )) in order that you believe; it is also said that this means: in order that you be safe from injury, according to another reading.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And Allah has made for you out of that which He has created shades, and has made for you places of refuge in the mountains, and has made for you garments to protect you from the heat (and cold), and coats of mail to protect you from your (mutual) violence. Thus does He perfect His Grace unto you, that you may submit yourselves to His Will (in Islam).
