﴿اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ﴾

English - Sahih International

58:16 They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah, and for them is a humiliating punishment.

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

They take the oaths they swear as protection against being killed due to disbelief, by outwardly showing Islam to protect their lives and wealth.
So they turn the people away from the truth by belittling and hindering the Muslims.
Therefore, they will face a humiliating punishment which will humiliate and shame them.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

They have made their oaths a screen (for their evil actions). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, so they shall have a humiliating torment.

Ittakhathoo aymanahum junnatan fasaddoo AAan sabeeli Allahi falahum AAathabun muheenun

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Translation

They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: therefore shall they have a humiliating Penalty.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

They used their oaths to hide, under the garb of truth, their extreme vanity and evil deeds, and many among the believers were deceived, and so their policy achieved its necessary ends. Consequently they have blocked the path of Allah, the path of righteousness and persistently opposed the progress in purpose and in action. There awaits them a humiliating and condign punishment

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(58:16) They have taken their oaths as a shield by means of which they hinder people from the Way of Allah. *34 Theirs shall be a humiliating chastisement.
