Verse 65 from surah At-Tawbah

﴿وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ﴾
[ التوبة: 65]

English - Sahih International

9:65 And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

If you, O Messenger, ask the hypocrites about the insults they used against the believers after Allah informs you of it, they will say, ‘We were just joking when we said that and we were not serious’.
Say, O Messenger, ‘Is it Allah, His verses and His Messenger that you were making fun of?’

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW) that you were mocking?"

Walain saaltahum layaqoolunna innama kunna nakhoodu wanalAAabu qul abiAllahi waayatihi warasoolihi kuntum tastahzioona

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Translation

If thou dost question them, they declare (with emphasis): "We were only talking idly and in play." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Signs, and His Messenger, that ye were mocking?"

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat and His Messenger that you were mocking"

They would insolently say: We always plunge into worldly ambition and like to turn matters into a joke. Say to them: Do you make Allah, His revelations and His Messenger the object of a joke and laugh them to scorn

(9:65) If you question them ("What were you talking about?"), they will promptly answer, "We were merely jesting and making merry.' *73 Ask them, "What, then! were you mocking at Allah and His Revelations and His Messenger?

*73) This refers to the hypocrites who used to make fun of the Holy Prophet and the true Muslims in their secret meetings when they were making preparations for the expedition to Tabuk. In this way, they used to discourage those Muslims who sincerely and honestly intended to go forth for Jihad. We learn many things in this connection from the traditions. For instance, in one of their meetings, when the hypocrites were having a gossip, one of them remarked, "I say! Do you think that the Romans are no better than the Arabs ? You will see that in the near future these "brave" men will be bound with ropes." Another responded to this, "What a fun it would be if after this each one of them is lashed with a hundred stripes ! " Still another, ridiculing the preparations by the Prophet for the expedition, remarked, "Look at this man, and his preparations ! He intends to go forth to conquer the forts in Syria and the Roman Empire."

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only meaning in Urdu

اگر ان سے پوچھو کہ تم کیا باتیں کر رہے تھے، تو جھٹ کہہ دیں گے کہ ہم تو ہنسی مذاق اور دل لگی کر رہے تھے ان سے کہو، "کیا تمہاری ہنسی دل لگی اللہ اور اُس کی آیات اور اس کے رسول ہی کے ساتھ تھی؟
