﴿فَبِمَا نَقْضِهِم مِّيثَاقَهُمْ وَكُفْرِهِم بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَقَتْلِهِمُ الْأَنبِيَاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَقَوْلِهِمْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌ ۚ بَلْ طَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴾
[ النساء: 155]

English - Sahih International

4:155 And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

I distanced them from My mercy because they broke the promise that was taken from them, disbelieved in Allah’s words, boldly killed the prophets and said to Muhammad ( peace be upon him ), 'Our hearts are covered, so we cannot understand what you say’ That is not the case.
Instead, Allah has sealed their hearts so no good reaches them.
They only have a little faith, which will not be of any use to them.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Because of their breaking the covenant, and of their rejecting the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and of their killing the Prophets unjustly, and of their saying: "Our hearts are wrapped (with coverings, i.e. we do not understand what the Messengers say)" - nay, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they believe not but a little.

(They have incurred divine displeasure): In that they broke their covenant; that they rejected the signs of Allah; that they slew the Messengers in defiance of right; that they said, "Our hearts are the wrappings (which preserve Allah's Word; We need no more)";- Nay, Allah hath set the seal on their hearts for their blasphemy, and little is it they believe;-

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Because of their breaking the covenant, and their rejecting the Ayat of Allah, and their killing the Prophets unjustly, and their saying: "Our hearts are Ghulf," nay, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they believe not but a little.

(4:155) (They have incurred Allah's wrath) for their breaking the covenant, and their rejection of the signs of Allah, and for slaying Prophets without right, and for saying: 'Our hearts are wrapped up in covers' *187 -even though in fact Allah has sealed their hearts because of their unbelief, so that they scarcely believe *188

*187). This statement of the Jews has already been mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah 2: 88. In fact, like all ignorant worshippers of falsehood, these people also boasted that their faith in the ideas and prejudices, customs and usages of their forefathers was so firm that they could never be made to forsake them. Whenever the Messengers of God tried to admonish them, they have been told point-blank that no matter what argument or evidence the latter might adduce in support of their message, they would never be prepared to alter their viewpoint. آخر کا ر اِن کی عہد شکنی کی وجہ سے، اور اس وجہ سے کہ انہوں نے اللہ کی آیات کو جھٹلایا، اور متعدد پیغمبروں کو نا حق قتل کیا، اور یہاں تک کہا کہ ہمارے دل غلافوں میں محفوظ ہیں حالانکہ در حقیقت اِن کی باطل پرستی کے سبب سے اللہ نے اِن کے دلوں پر ٹھپہ لگا دیا ہے اور اسی وجہ سے یہ بہت کم ایمان لاتے ہیں
