Quran 4:134 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

Whoever desires by his deeds the reward of this world then God has the reward of this world and of the Hereafter for the one who wants it and no one else has it so why do any of you demand the lower reward? Why do you not seek the higher one by devoting yourself sincerely to Him since what reward he seeks can only be found with Him; God is ever Hearer Seer.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

And whoever sets his mind upon the mundane things which minister to his enjoyment and content here below must realize that in heavens realm does Allah have all that ministers to his enjoyment and content here below and all the divine things which conduce to His mercy and grace Hereafter; Allah has always been ever Sami’un and Bassirun with unlimited audition, He sees all that you do

Quran 4:134 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

The Necessity of Taqwa of Allah Allah states that He is the Owner of the heavens and earth and that He is the Supreme Authority over them.
Hence Allah's statement, وَلَقَدْ وَصَّيْنَا الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَـبَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَإِيَّـكُمْ ( And verily, We have recommended to the People of the Scripture before you, and to you ) meaning, We have recommended to you what We recommended to the People of Scriptures; Taqwa of Allah, by worshipping Him Alone without partners.
Allah then said, وَإِن تَكْفُرُواْ فَإِنَّ للَّهِ مَا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ ( But if you disbelieve, then unto Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth ).
In another Ayah, Allah said that Musa said to his people, إِن تَكْفُرُواْ أَنتُمْ وَمَن فِى الاٌّرْضِ جَمِيعًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ ( "If you disbelieve, you and all on the earth together, then verily, Allah is Rich (free of any need ), Owner of all praise.").
Allah said, فَكَفَرُواْ وَتَوَلَّواْ وَّاسْتَغْنَى اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ ( So they disbelieved and turned away.
But Allah was not in need (of them )
.
And Allah is Rich ( free of any need ), Worthy of all praise) meaning, He is far too Rich than to need His servants, and worthy of all praise in all His decisions and commandments.
The meaning of Allah's statement, وَللَّهِ مَا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَكِيلاً ( And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.
And Allah is Ever All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs. )
He has perfect watch over every soul, knowing what it deserves, He is the Watcher, and Witness of all things.
Allah's statement, إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ وَيَأْتِ بِـاخَرِينَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلَى ذلِكَ قَدِيراً ( If He wills, He can take you away, O people, and bring others.
And Allah is Ever All-Potent over that. )
means, He is able to take you away and replace you with other people if you disobey Him.
In a similar Ayah, Allah said, الْفُقَرَآءُ وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوْاْ يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْماً غَيْرَكُمْ ثُمَّ لاَ يَكُونُواْ ( And if you turn away, He will exchange you for some other people and they will not be your likes ) Allah's statement, مَّن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا فَعِندَ اللَّهِ ثَوَابُ الدُّنْيَا وَالاٌّخِرَةِ ( Whoever desires the rewards of this life, then with Allah is the reward of this worldly life and of the Hereafter. ) means, O those whose ultimate desire is this life, know that Allah owns the rewards of this life and the Hereafter.
Therefore, if you ask Allah for both, He will enrich you, award you and suffice for you.
Give us in this world!" and for such there will be no portion in the Hereafter.
And of them there are some who say: "Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!" For them there will be alloted a share for what they have earned )
, مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ حَرْثَ الاٌّخِرَةِ نَزِدْ لَهُ فِى حَرْثِهِ ( Whosoever desires (by his deeds ) the reward of the Hereafter, We give him increase in his reward), and مَّن كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْعَـجِلَةَ عَجَّلْنَا لَهُ فِيهَا مَا نَشَآءُ لِمَن نُّرِيدُ ( Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment of this world ), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like) until, انظُرْ كَيْفَ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ ( See how We prefer one above another (in this world )).
So Allah said here, وَكَانَ اللَّهُ سَمِيعاً بَصِيراً ( And Allah is Ever All-Hearer, All-Seer. )

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(4:134) He who desires the reward of this world, let him know that with Allah is the reward of this world and also of the World to Come. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. *163

Whoever desires the reward of this world meaning

*163).
In the Qur'an God often rounds off His enunciation of laws by urging people to reform those aspects of family life and social order in which they are generally liable to commit injustice with admonitions designed to create in people the urge to follow those legal injunctions.
Since in the preceding verse the believers were asked to treat women and orphans with justice and kindness it was deemed necessary to bring home to them the following points:
First, that people should not entertain the illusion that they have the power to make or mar the destinies of others, that if they were to withdraw their support, people would be left helpless.
The fact is that the destinies of all lie in the Hand of God alone and He need not remain dependent upon any single person as the sole instrument for helping any particular creature.
The resources of the Lord of the heavens and the earth are limitless and He also knows how to use those resources.

Second, that the followers of the Prophet ( peace be on him ) ought to heed the admonition that was made to them, just as it was made to the followers of the former Prophets: to fear God in all their actions.
They are being told in effect that by following God's guidance they will secure their own well-being rather than be the source of any benefit to God, that they can do God no harm by disobeying Him, just as it did not lie in the power of the followers of the former Prophets to cause God any harm.
The Lord of the Universe does not need people's obedience.
If they disobey He may simply replace them with some other nation, and their dismissal will not diminish the majesty and splendour of His realm in the least.

Third, that God alone has the power to dispense the good of this world as well as that of the Hereafter, to lavish transient benefits as well as abiding felicity.
It all depends on a man's nature and the extent of his ambition what kind of benefit he seeks from God.
If a man is infatuated with the fleeting benefits of this world, and is prepared to sacrifice the benefits of the everlasting life, then God will grant him only the good of this world and he will have no share in the good of the Hereafter.
God's benevolence is like a river which never dries up, a river which is both capable of, and geared to, providing abundant water to all who need their tillage watered.
It is short-sighted and unambitious to want one's fields to be irrigated only once, and to be prepared thereafter to face the prospect of eternal drought.
Anyone with breadth of vision would commit himself to submit to God and obey Him, thereby earning the well-being of both worlds.

The section ends with the assertion that God is All-Seeing and All-Hearing.
This means that God is fully aware of the actions of His creatures, and is unlike those negligent sovereigns who are blind in lavishing their favours.
God governs the universe with full knowledge and awareness.
He has an eye on the capacities and ambitions of all human beings and knows their qualities exactly.
He is fully aware of the purposes to which people devote their efforts and energies.
Anyone who 'wilfully decides to be disobedient to God should therefore not cherish hopes of receiving the favours reserved for those who obey Him.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( Whoso desireth the reward of the world ) whoever desires worldly benefit for the works that Allah has obligated upon him, ( (let him know that ) with Allah is the reward of the world) let him do works for the reward of this world ( and the Hereafter ) are in Allah’s hands. ( Allah is ever Hearer ) of what you say, ( Seer ) of your works.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Whoever desires a reward in this life of the world, then with Allah (Alone and none else) is the reward of this worldly life and of the Hereafter. And Allah is Ever All-Hearer, All-Seer.
