Quran 7:161 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

And mention when it was said to them ‘Dwell in this city the Holy House of Jerusalem and eat therein wherever you will and say ‘our concern is for an Exoneration’ and enter the gate that is the gate of the city prostrating a prostration that is actually a bow. We shall forgive read naghfir or the passive tughfar you your transgressions; We shall give more to those who are virtuous through obedience in terms of reward.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

We said to them You make abode in this town* and eat as you will, wherever you will. It is all replete with choice of all delights. Enjoy all that is wholesome and affords pleasure, but let your bosoms surge up and answer thanks and express your thoughts in words invoking Me to relieve your hearts and unload your burden of sins, Humble yourselves and bow your knees to Me as you go through the gate , then and only then will I forgive your iniquities and reward those whose deeds are imprinted with wisdom and piety with what runs higher than what corresponds with their piety

Quran 7:161 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

And We divided them into twelve tribes ( as distinct ) nations.
We revealed to Musa when his people asked him for water ( saying ): "Strike the stone with your stick," and there gushed forth out of it twelve springs, each group knew its own place for water.
We shaded them with the clouds and sent down upon them the manna and the quail ( saying ): "Eat of the good things with which We have provided you." They harmed Us not but they used to harm themselves ( 160 )And ( remember ) when it was said to them: "Dwell in this town ( Jerusalem ) and eat therefrom wherever you wish, and say, '( O Allah ) forgive our sins'; and enter the gate prostrating ( bowing with humility ).
We shall forgive you your wrongdoings.
We shall increase ( the reward ) for the good-doers.
( 161 )But those among them who did wrong, changed the word that had been told to them.
So We sent on them a torment from the heaven in return for their wrongdoings ( 162 ) We discussed these Ayat in Surat Al-Baqarah, which was revealed in Al-Madinah, while these Ayat were revealed in Makkah.
We also mentioned the difference between the two narrations, and thus we do not need to repeat it here, all thanks are due to Allah and all the favors are from Him.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(7:161) And recall *120 when it was said to them: 'Dwell in this town and eat plentifully of whatever you please, and say: "Repentance", and enter the gate prostrate. We shall forgive you your sins and shall bestow further favours on those who do good.'

And [mention, O Muhammad], when it was meaning

*120).
This alludes to their constant defiance and rebellion in face of God' favours which eventually brought about their destruction.
