Quran 27:19 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Whereat he Solomon smiled fa-tabassama the beginning of the sentence amused dāhikan the end of the sentence at its words which he had heard from three miles away and which was carried to him by the winds. When he was on the verge of entering their valley he Solomon made his hosts halt until they the ants had entered their dwellings — on this journey his hosts consisted of cavalry and infantry. And he said ‘My Lord inspire me to be thankful for Your grace with which You have favoured me and my parents and to do good that will please You and include me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants’ the prophets and saints.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And there did Sulaymans countenance turn expressive of pleasure and amusement and he laughed at what he thought was indeed incredible and at once he prayed: O Allah, my Creator, I pray and beseech You to actuate me with the feeling of gratitude and gratefulness for Your grace and blessing and Your beneficent gift you bestowed on me and my parents Help me impress my deeds with wisdom and piety to Your satisfaction, and in mercy to me, admit me O Allah, my Creator, into the realm of those of Your votaries in whose hearts reigns piety
Quran 27:19 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Dawud and Sulayman ( peace be upon them ), the organization of Sulayman's Troops and His passage through the Valley of the Ants
Here Allah tells us about the great blessings and favors which He bestowed upon two of His servants and Prophets, Dawud ( David ) and his son Sulayman ( Solomon ), peace be upon them both, and how they enjoyed happiness in this world and the Hereafter, power and authority in this world, and the position of being Prophets and Messengers.
Allah says:
( And indeed We gave knowledge to Dawud and Sulayman, and they both said: "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has preferred us above many of His believing servants!" )
( And Sulayman inherited from Dawud. ) means, in kingship and prophethood.
What is meant here is not wealth, because if that were the case, Sulayman would not have been singled out from among the sons of Dawud, as Dawud had one hundred wives.
Rather what is meant is the inheritance of kingship and prophethood, for the wealth of the Prophets cannot be inherited, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«نَحْنُ مَعَاشِرَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ لَا نُورَثُ، مَا تَرَكْنَاهُ فَهُوَ صَدَقَة»
( We Prophets cannot be inherited from; whatever we leave behind is charity. ) And Sulayman said:
( O mankind! We have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from everything. ) Here Sulayman was speaking of the blessings that Allah bestowed upon him, by giving him complete authority and power, whereby mankind, the Jinn and the birds were subjugated to him.
He also knew the language of the birds and animals, which is something that had never been given to any other human being -- as far as we know from what Allah and His Messenger told us.
Allah enabled Sulayman to understand what the birds said to one another as they flew through the air, and what the different kinds of animals said.
Sulayman said:
( We have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from everything. ) i.e., all things that a king needs.
( This, verily, is an evident grace. ) means, `this is clearly the blessings of Allah upon us.'
( And there were gathered before Sulayman his hosts of Jinn and men, and birds, and they all were set in battle order. ) means, all of Sulayman's troops of Jinn, men and birds were gathered together, and he rode with them in a display of might and glory, with people marching behind him, followed by the Jinn, and the birds flying above his head.
When it was hot, they would shade him with their wings.
( and they all were set in battle order. ) The first and the last of them were brought together, so that none of them would step out of place.
Mujahid said: "Officials were appointed to keep each group in order, and to keep the first and the last together so that no one would step out of line -- just as kings do nowadays."
( Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, ) meaning, when Sulayman, the soldiers and the army with him crossed the valley of the ants,
( one of the ants said: "O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulayman and his armies should crush you, while they perceive not." ) Sulayman, peace be upon him, understood what the ant said,
( So he smiled, amused at her speech and said: "My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your favors which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, ) meaning: `inspire me to give thanks for the blessings that You have bestowed upon me by teaching me to understand what the birds and animals say, and the blessings that You have bestowed upon my parents by making them Muslims who believe in You.'
( and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, ) means, `deeds that You love which will earn Your pleasure.'
( and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants. ) means, `when You cause me to die, then join me with the righteous among Your servants, and the Higher Companion among Your close friends.'
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(27:19) Hearing its words, Solomon laughed smilingly and said "O My Lord, restrain *25 me so that I may render thanks to Thee for Thy favours which Thou hast bestowed upon the and my parents, and (enable me) to do such good works as may please Thee; and admit me, by Thy mercy, among Thy righteous servants. " *26
So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, meaning
*25) " Restrain me...thanks to Thee " means this: " O my Lord! the wonderful powers and abilities that You have given me are such that if I become even a little forgetful and heedless, I might transgress the bounds of service and be puffed up with pride and go astray.
Therefore, O my Lord, restrain me so that I may remain grateful to You for all Your blessings instead of being ungrateful.
"
*26) " Admit me..righteous servants " probably implies this: " I should be included among the righteous in the Hereafter and should enter Paradise along with them. " For a person who dces righteous acts will automatically be righteous, but one's entry into Paradise in the Hereafter cannot come about merely on the strength of one's good works, but it will depend on Allah's mercy.
According to a Hadith, the Holy Prophet once said, " Merely the deeds of any one of you will not enable him to enter Paradise. " It was asked, " In your case too, O Messenger of Allah? " He replied, " Yes, I also shall not enter Paradise only on the strength of my deeds, unless Allah Almighty covers me with His mercy. " This prayer of the Prophet Solomon on this occasion becomes irrelevant if an Naml is taken to mean a vibe of human beings and namlah a member of that tribe.
After all, there could be nothing extraordinary in the warning given by a member of a human tribe to the people of his vibe about the approaching troops of a powerful king that it should have induced the king to make such a prayer to Allah.
However, a person's having such a wonderful power of comprehension that he may hear the speech of an ant from a distance and also understand it, is certainly something extraordinary, which can involve a person in self-conceit and vanity.
In such a case only the prayer of the Prophet Solomon can be relevant.
