English - Sahih International

2:257 Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve - their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

Quran 2:257 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

God is the Protector helper of the believers; He brings them forth from the shadows of unbelief into the light of faith. And the disbelievers — their protectors are false deities that bring them forth from the light into the shadows the repetition of ‘bringing forth from’ here is either to be taken as a reflection of His previous words “He brings them forth from the shadows” or as a reference to all those Jews who believed in the Prophet before he was sent but then rejected him those are the inhabitants of the Fire therein they shall abide.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Allah is the Guardian of those whose hearts truly believe spiritually. He guides them out of darkness and superstition of later times and out of want of spiritual and intellectual vision into illumination and mental enlightenment, whereas those who denied Allah are guided by the prince of darkness, or by those with Satanic characteristics, leading them out of light and driving them into darkness and want of spiritual and intellectual vision. Such persons shall be the inmates of Hell fire, their eternal abode

Quran 2:257 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Allah stated that whoever follows what pleases Him, He will guide him to the paths of peace, that is Islam, or Paradise.
Verily, Allah delivers His believing servants from the darkness of disbelief, doubt and hesitation, to the light of the plain, clear, explained, easy and unequivocal truth.
He also stated that Shaytan is the supporter of the disbelievers who beautifies the paths of ignorance and misguidance that they follow, thus causing them to deviate from the true path into disbelief and wickedness. أُولَـئِكَ أَصْحَـبُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـلِدُونَ ( Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever. ) This is why Allah mentioned the light in the singular while mentioned the darkness in the plural, because truth is one, while disbelief comes as several types, all of which are false.
Similarly, Allah said, وَأَنَّ هَـذَا صِرَطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَلاَ تَتَّبِعُواْ السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَن سَبِيلِهِ ذَلِكُمْ وَصَّـكُمْ بِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ( And verily, this is my straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other ) paths, for they will separate you away from His path.
This He has ordained for you that you may have Taqwa) 6:153, وَجَعَلَ الظُّلُمَـتِ وَالنُّورَ ( And originated the darknesses and the light ) 6:1, and, ظِلَـلُهُ عَنِ الْيَمِينِ ( to the right and to the lefts ) 16: 48 There are many other Ayat on the subject that mention the truth in the singular and falsehood in the plural, because of falsehood's many divisions and branches.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(2:257) And Allah (Whose support he takes) hears everything and knows everything. Allah is the Helper and Protector of those who believe in Him: He brings them out of the depths of darkness *287 into the light. As for the disbelievers, they have taghut *288 as their patron, who drives them out of light into the depths of darkness. These are the people who are doomed to the Fire, wherein they shall live for ever.

Allah is the ally of those who meaning

*287).
The 'darkness' mentioned here means the darkness of Ignorance, which throws man off the path of salvation and well-being and directs his energies and efforts to wrong directions in defiance of reality.
'Light' here means the knowledge of Truth with the help of which man comes to know his own realitv and that of the universe; this knowledge also shows him the purpose of his life, and thus leads him consciously, to adopt the Right Way.

*288).
Here taghut ( see n.
286 above )
has a plural connotation.
It implies that by turning away from God a man is subjected not to the tyranny of one, but to the tyranny of many tawaghit ( evil one ).
One of these is Satan, who throws up new temptations and allurements.
Another potential taghut ( transgressor ) is man's own animal self, which seeks to subjugate him to his appetites and desires.
There are many more taghut in the world outside oneself ; one's wife and children, one's relatives, one's family and one's community, one's friends and acquaintances, one's social environment and one's people, one's leaders and guides, one's government and rulers are all potential taghut, each one of whom seeks to have his purposes served.
Man remains subjected to these innumerable masters throughout his life, not knowing precisely whom he should please and whose displeasure he should avoid.

Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( Allah is the Protecting Friend of those who believe ) He protects and gives victory to the believers, referring here to ’Abdullah Ibn Salam and his companions. ( He bringeth them out of darkness into light ) He gave them success and brought them out of disbelief into faith. ( As for those who disbelieve ) i.e. Ka’b Ibn al-Ashraf and his companions, ( their patrons are false deities ) the devil. ( They bring them out of light into darkness ) they invite them from faith to disbelief. ( Such are rightful owners of the Fire ) the dwellers of hell. ( They will abide therein forever ) never to die or leave it.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are Taghut [false deities and false leaders, etc.], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever.
