14:26 And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.

Quran 14:26 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And the similitude of a bad saying that is the word of unbelief is as a bad tree a colocynth uprooted from upon the earth having no stability no fixing or foundation. Similarly the word of unbelief has no foundation and no shoot or blessing.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Whereas an evil word stands similitude exact of an evil tree; it may flourish to begin with but soon enough it is uprooted from the soil and the surface of the earth. Its roots being loosely implanted, it does not have the strength to grow erect nor does it eventually grow at all

The Parable of the Word of Islam and the Word of Kufr
`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that `Abdullah bin `Abbas commented that Allah's statement,
مَثَلاً كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً
( a parable: a goodly word ), refers to testifying to La ilaha illallah, ( none has the right to be worshipped but Allah ) while,
كَشَجَرةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ
( as a goodly tree ), refers to the believer, and that,
أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ
( whose root is firmly fixed ), indicates that La ilaha illallah, ( none has the right to be worshipped but Allah ) is firm in the believers' heart,
وَفَرْعُهَا فِى السَّمَآءِ
( and its branches (reach ) to the sky.) with which the believer's works are ascended to heaven.
Similar is said by Ad-Dahhak, Sa'id bin Jubayr, `Ikrimah, Mujahid and several others.
They stated that this parable describes the believer's deeds, good statements and good actions.
The believer is just like the beneficial date tree, always having good actions ascending at all times, by day and by night.
Al-Bukhari recorded that `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he asked,
«أَخْبِرُونِي عَنْ شَجَرَةٍ تُشْبِهُ أَوْ كَالرَّجُلِ الْمُسْلِمِ لَا يَتَحَاتُّ وَرَقُهَا صَيْفًا وَلَا شِتَاءً، وَتُؤْتِي أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَا»
( Tell me about a tree that resembles the Muslim, the leaves of which do not fall in summer or winter and gives its fruit at all times by the leave of its Lord. )" Ibn `Umar said, "I thought of the date palm tree, but felt shy to answer when I saw that Abu Bakr and `Umar did not talk.
When they did not give an answer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
«هِيَ النَّخْلَة»
( It is the date palm tree. ) When we departed, I said to `Umar, `My father, by Allah! I thought that it was the date tree.' He said, `Why did you not speak then' I said, `I saw you were silent and I felt shy to say anything.' `Umar said, `Had you said it, it would have been more precious to me than such things ( i.e., would have been very precious to me )."' `Abdullah bin `Abbas said that,
كَشَجَرةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ
( as a goodly tree ), is a tree in Paradise.
Allah said next,
تُؤْتِى أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ
( Giving its fruit at all times, ) It is said that it means by day and by night.
And they say that describes the believer as a tree that always has fruits during summer and winter, by night and by day.
This is the parable of the believer whose good works ascend to heaven by day and by night and at all times,
بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَا
( by the leave of its Lord, ) thus earning perfection and becoming beneficial, plentiful, pure and blessed,
وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
( and Allah sets forth parables for mankind in order that they may remember. ) Allah said next,
وَمَثلُ كَلِمَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ كَشَجَرَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ
( And the parable of an evil word is that of an evil tree ) describing the disbelief of the disbeliever, for it has no basis or stability.
It is similar to the colocynth tree ( a very bitter, unscented plant ) which is also called, `Ash-Shiryan'.
Shu`bah narrated that Mu`awiyah bin Abi Qurrah narrated that Anas bin Malik said that it is the colocynth tree.
Allah said,
اجْتُثَّتْ
( uprooted ), meaning, was cutoff from the root,
مِن فَوْقِ الاٌّرْضِ مَا لَهَا مِن قَرَارٍ
( from the surface of earth, having no stability. ) therefore, existing without basis or stabililty, just like Kufr ( disbelief ), for it does not have a basis or roots.
Surely, the works of the disbelievers will never ascend nor will any of them be accepted.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(14:26) And an `evil word' *37 may be likened to an evil tree; which is torn out from the earth and has no stability. *38
And the example of a bad word meaning
*37) " Evil word " is the opposite of " Pure Word " It may be applied to everything that is unreal and wrong but here it stands for any false creed that one might adopt as a basis of one's system of life, irrespective of whether it be atheism or heresy or disbelief or shirk or idol-worship or any other " ism " that has not been brought by a Messenger.
*38) And " evil word " ( false creed ) has no stability because it is against the Law of nature.
Therefore, everything in the universe opposes it and refutes it, as if the earth hates it and is ready to spit out its seeds every time they are sown in it, and if some need succeeds in growing an evil tree, heaven suppresses down its branches.
In fact, false creed could never have been allowed to develop, if man had not been given the freedom of choice and respite for work for the sake of his trial.
That is why when same foolish people exert to establish a system of life on it, it is allowed to grow to a certain extent, but it produces nothing but harmful results as long as it lasts.
And no sooner dces it encounter with adverse circumstances than it is thoroughly uprooted from the earth.
The distinction between the " Pure Word " and the " evil word " is so apparent that anyone who makes a critical study of the religious, moral, intellectual and cultural history of the world can perceive it easily.
For the " Pure Word " has always been the one and same during the whole history of mankind and has never been uprooted.
On the contrary, there have been innumerable " evil words " but each and every one has been so uprooted that there has remained hardly anything of it except its name in the pages of history.
Nay, some of these had proved to be so absurd that if these are mentioned today one wonders how one could have followed such nonsensical things.
There has been another noteworthy difference between the two " words ".
Whenever and wherever the " Pure Word " has been adopted by an individual or a community, its blessings had not been confined to that individual and community but had benefited all around them.
On the contrary, whenever and wherever an evil word has been adopted by an individual or a community, its evils had spread chaos and disorder all around them.
In this connection, it should also be noted that the parable of the " Pure Word " and the " evil word " explains the same theme that had been explained by the similitudes of the mound of ashes that is blown away by the " wind " of the stormy day ( v.
f8 ) and of the " foam cf flood ", and the " scum of the melted metals. " ( XIII: 17 ) C v a N

The Parable of the Word of Islam and the Word of Kufr

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( And the similitude of a bad saying ) associating partners with Allah ( is as a bad tree ) this refers to the idolater. He says: idolatry is blameworthy and no aspect of it is praiseworthy, just as the idolater is censored and there is nothing praiseworthy about him; it is also said that the bad tree refers to the colocynth which is bitter and useless, and so is the idolater: useless and censored, ( uprooted from upon the earth, possessing no stability ) it has no firmness on the face of the earth; and so is the idolater: he does not have any proof to cling to, just as the colocynth does not have roots which keep it firmly grounded. Moreover, while a person is an idolater none of his works are accepted.
