Quran 17:37 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And do not walk in the earth exultantly that is exultant with pride and conceit. Indeed you will not rend the earth you will not pierce it and reach its depths with your pride nor attain the mountains in height the meaning is that you shall never attain such ends so how can you be so arrogant?
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Nor should you walk on earth displaying inordinate self-esteem or with an overweening opinion of your qualities, attainments or estate, for even if the incessant tread of your feet wear the rough stones smooth, you shall not be able to rend the earth nor shall you be able to level to a mountain in height
Quran 17:37 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance.
Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height ( 37 )All the bad aspects of these ( the above mentioned things ) are hateful to your Lord ( 38 )
Condemnation of strutting
Allah forbids His servants to strut and walk in a boastful manner:
وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا
( And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance. ) meaning, walking in boastful manner and acting proud, like those who are arrogant oppressors.
( Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth ) means, you cannot penetrate the earth with your walking.
This was the opinion of Ibn Jarir.
( nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height )
means, with your arrogance, pride and self-admiration.
Indeed, such behavior may bring about the opposite of what one pretends to be, as was reported in the Sahih:
"While a man from the people before you was walking arrogantly in his garments, the earth swallowed him and he is still sinking down into it, until the Day of Resurrection."
Allah also tells us about Qarun, who went to his people wearing his finery, then Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his house.
( All the bad aspects of these (the above mentioned things ) are Sayi'uhu ( hateful ) to your Lord.)
Some scholars recite this as Sayi'atan, meaning evil deeds, i.e., everything mentioned is forbidden, from the Ayah,
( And kill not your children for fear of poverty )[ 17:31 ]
up to this [ 38 ] Ayah.
So everything that is mentioned here is a Sayi'ah ( evil deed ) for which a person is to be blamed before Allah, Who does not like or accept these deeds.
As for the recitation Sayi'uhu, it is a genetive construction, meaning the bad aspects of these i.e., everything mentioned from the Ayah,
( And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. )[ 17:23 ]
up to this Ayah [ 17:38 ] meaning that the worst of these mentioned are disliked by Allah.
This was the view of Ibn Jarir, may Allah have mercy on him.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(17:37) (14). Do not strut about in the land for you can neither cleave the earth nor attain the height of the mountains. *43
And do not walk upon the earth meaning
*43) This instruction warns against the ways of tyrants and vain people and is not merely meant for the individual but also for the collective conduct of the Muslim Community.
It was because of this guidance that the rulers, governors and commanders of the Islamic State which was established on the basis of this Manifesto, were free from every tinge of tyranny, arrogance, haughtiness, pride and vanity, so much so that even in the battlefield they never uttered a word which had the slightest indication of any of these vain things.
Their gait, dress, dwelling and conveyance showed humility.
In short, their ways of conduct were not those of " big ones " but those of humble persons.
That is why they never tried to overawe the people of a conquered city by show of pomp and pride.
Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi
And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance.
Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height ( 37 )All the bad aspects of these ( the above mentioned things ) are hateful to your Lord ( 38 )

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( And walk not in the earth exultant ) showing haughtiness and arrogance. ( Lo! thou canst not rend the earth ) by means of your arrogance, ( nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills ) nor reach the height of the mountains.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance. Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height.
