English - Sahih International

29:41 The example of those who take allies other than Allah is like that of the spider who takes a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.

Quran 29:41 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

The likeness of those who choose besides God other patrons namely idols from whom they hope to profit is as the likeness of the spider that makes a home for itself in which to shelter. And truly the frailest the weakest of homes is the home of the spider for it neither protects it from heat nor cold — likewise idols cannot benefit those who worship them — if they only knew this they would not worship them.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

The like of those who take tutelary guardians or protectors besides Allah stands similitude exact of the spider which seeks protection in a house made of slender filaments or threads spun all round. It may be strong enough to suit its purpose, but it collapses by a wave of the hand, and so the spiders house is indeed the flimsiest of all houses if only they -the infidels- know

Quran 29:41 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Likening the gods of the Idolators to the House of a Spider This is how Allah described the idolators in their reverence of gods besides Him, hoping that they would help them and provide for them, and turning to them in times of difficulties.
In this regard, they were like the house of a spider, which is so weak and frail, because by clinging to these gods they were like a person who holds on to a spider's web, who does not gain any benefit from that.
If they knew this, they would not take any protectors besides Allah.
This is unlike the Muslim believer, whose heart is devoted to Allah, yet he still does righteous deeds and follows the Laws of Allah, for he has grasped the most trustworthy handle that will never break because it is so strong and firm.
Then Allah warns those who worship others besides Him and associate others with Him that He knows what they do and the rivals they associate with Him.
He will punish them for their attribution, for He is All-Wise and All-Knowing.
Then He says: وَتِلْكَ الاٌّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَآ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ ( And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge. ) meaning, no one understands them or ponders them except those who are possessed of deep knowledge.
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that `Amr bin Murrah said, "I never came across an Ayah of the Book of Allah that I did not know, but it grieved me, because I heard that Allah says: وَتِلْكَ الاٌّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَآ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ ( And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge.
)
"

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(29:41) The case of those who took others than Allah as their protectors is that of a spider who builds a house; but the frailest of all houses is the spider's house; if they only knew. *73

The example of those who take allies meaning

*73) All the above-mentioned nations were involved in shirk, and their belief about their deities was that they were their supporters and helpers and guardians, and had the power to make or mar their destinies; so when they will have won their goodwill by worship and.
presentation of offerings they will succour them in need and protect them against calamities and afflictions.
But, as shown by the historical events cited above, all their beliefs and superstitions proved to be baseless when their destruction was decreed by Allah.
Then no god, and no god incarnate, and no saint or spirit, and no jinn or angel, whom they worshipped came to their rescue, and they met their destruction with the realization that their expectations and beliefs had been false and futile.
After relating these events, Allah is now warning the mushriks to the effect: " The reality of the toy-house of expectations that you have built on your faith in the powerless servants and imaginary deities, apart from the real Master and Ruler of the universe, is no more than the cobweb of a spider.
Just as a cobweb cannot stand the slightest interference by a finger, so will the toy-house of your expectations collapse in its first clash with the scheme of Allah.
It is nothing but ignorance that you are involved in the web of superstition.
Had you any knowledge of the Reality you would not have built your system of life on baseless props.
The fact is that none other than the One Lord of the worlds in this universe is the Owner of power and authority, and His support is the only support which is reliable.
"
Now whoever rejects taghut and believes in Allah has taken a firm support that never gives way.
And Allah hears everything and knows everything." ( Al-Baqarah: 256 ).

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs

( The likeness of those who choose ) worshipped ( other patrons than Allah ) idols as Lords ( is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider’s house ) He says: the spider’s web does not protect the spider from heat nor from cold; and idols do not protect those who worship them in this worldly life nor in the Hereafter, ( if they but knew ) this similitude; but they do not know nor believe in it.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

The likeness of those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) other than Allah is as the likeness of a spider, who builds (for itself) a house, but verily, the frailest (weakest) of houses is the spider's house; if they but knew.
