34:42 But today you do not hold for one another [the power of] benefit or harm, and We will say to those who wronged, "Taste the punishment of the Fire, which you used to deny."

Quran 34:42 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
God exalted be He says ‘So today none among you has any power over another in other words none of those worshipped have any power over any of those who worshipped either to benefit through intercession or to hurt’ through chastisement. And We shall say to those who did wrong who disbelieved ‘Taste the chastisement of the Fire which you used to deny!’
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
There and then shall all he told: This is the day on which none of you has power over the others nor can any of you avail or do harm to the others. We will say to the wrongful of actions: Now taste the torment of the Fire which you had consistently denied
Quran 34:42 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Angels will disown Their Worshippers on the Day of Resurrection
Allah tells us that on the Day of Resurrection, He will rebuke the idolators before all of creation.
He will ask the angels whom the idolators used to worship, claiming that their idols were in the form of these angels and that they could bring them nearer to Allah.
He will ask the angels:
أَهَـؤُلاَءِ إِيَّاكُمْ كَانُواْ يَعْبُدُونَ
( Was it you that these people used to worship ) meaning, `did you command them to worship you' Allah says in Surat Al-Furqan:
أَءَنتُمْ أَضْلَلْتُمْ عِبَادِى هَـؤُلاَءِ أَمْ هُمْ ضَلُّوا السَّبِيلَ
( Was it you who misled these My servants or did they (themselves ) stray from the ( right ) path) ( 25:17 ).
And He will say to `Isa, peace be upon him:
أَءَنتَ قُلتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِى وَأُمِّىَ إِلَـهَيْنِ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سُبْحَـنَكَ مَا يَكُونُ لِى أَنْ أَقُولَ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِحَقٍّ
( Did you say unto men: "Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah,' He will say: "Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say ).") ( 5:116 ).
Similarly, the angels will say:
سُبْحَـنَكَ
Glorified be You! meaning, exalted and sanctified be You above the notion that there could be any god besides You.
You are our Protector instead of them.
means, we are Your servants and we disown these people before You.
( Nay, but they used to worship the Jinn; ) meaning, the Shayatin, because they are the ones who made idol worship attractive to them and who misguided them.
most of them were believers in them.
This is like the A0yah:
إِن يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ إِلاَّ إِنَـثاً وَإِن يَدْعُونَ إِلاَّ شَيْطَـناً مَّرِيداً لَّعَنَهُ اللَّهُ
( They invoke nothing but females besides Him, and they invoke nothing but Shaytan, a persistent rebel! Allah cursed him ) ( 4:117-118 ).
Allah says:
( So Today, none of you can profit or harm one another. ) means, `none of those idols and rivals whom you hoped would benefit you, will be of any avail to you, those whom you worshipped in the hope that they would help you at times of stress and calamity.
Today they will have no power either to benefit you or to harm you.'
And We shall say to those who did wrong: -- meaning the idolators --
( "Taste the torment of the Fire which you used to deny." ) meaning, this will be said to them by way of rebuke.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(34:42) Today none of you has the power to benefit or harm another; *63 and We shall say to the evil-doers: 'Taste now the chastisement of the Fire which you used to deny, calling it a lie.'
But today you do not hold for meaning
*63) In this sentence, jinn implies the satans among the jinns.
The answer means: " Apparently these people worshipped us, by mentioning our names and by making our images according to their imaginations.
But, in fact, they did not worship us but worshipped the satans, for the satans only had shown them the way that they should regard others than Allah as fulfillers of their needs, and should make offerings before them.
"
This verse clearly brings out the error of the view of those people who take the word " jinn " to mean the dwellers of the mountains and deserts and rural areas.
Can a sensible person imagine, on the basis of this verse, that the people used to worship the dwellers of the mountains and the deserts and the villages and believed in them? This verse also throws light on another meaning of 'ibadat.
It shows that 'ibadat is not mere worship and service, but it also implies carrying out somebody's orders and obeying him without question.
Even if one curses another ( as one curses Satan ) but at the time follows his way, one would be performing his 'ibadat.
For other examples, see An-Nisa': 117-119; Al-Ma'idah: 60; At-Taubah: 31; Maryam: 42; AI-Qasas:63.

( That day ) which is the Day of Judgement ( ye will possess no use ) no intercession ( nor hurt ) by driving away the torment ( one for another ) i.e. the angels and the jinn for Banu Malih. ( And We shall say unto those who did wrong ) those who ascribed partners to Allah: ( Taste the doom of the Fire which ye used to deny ) in the life of the world.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
So Today (i.e. the Day of Resurrection), none of you can profit or harm one another. And We shall say to those who did wrong [i.e. worshipped others (like angels, jinns, prophets, saints, righteous persons, etc.) along with Allah]: "Taste the torment of the Fire which you used to belie.
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
