Quran 26:63 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
God exalted be He says Thereupon We revealed to Moses ‘Strike the sea with your staff’ and he struck it whereupon it parted it split into twelve parts and each part was as a mighty mountain between each of these parts were paths which they followed such that not even the saddles or the felts of the riders were touched by water.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
We inspired Mussa to strike the sea with his staff and there did the sea split into two enormous divisions, each partition as immense as a huge mountain
Quran 26:63 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Fir`awn's Pursuit and Expulsion of the Children of Israel, and how He and His People were drowned
More than one of the scholars of Tafsir said that Fir`awn set out with a huge group, a group containing the leaders and entire government of Egypt at that time, i.e., the decision-makers and influential figures, princes, ministers, nobles, leaders and soldiers.
( So, they pursued them at sunrise. ) means, they caught up with the Children of Israel at sunrise.
( And when the two hosts saw each other, ) means, each group saw the other.
At that point,
( the companions of Musa said: "We are sure to be overtaken." ) This was because Fir`awn and his people caught up with them on the shores of the Red Sea, so the sea was ahead of them and Fir`awn and his troops were behind them.
Hence they said:
( "We are sure to be overtaken." (Musa ) said: "Nay, verily with me is my Lord.
He will guide me.") meaning, `nothing of what you fear will happen to you, for Allah is the One Who commanded me to bring you here, and He does not go back on His promise.' Harun, peace be upon him, was in the front, with Yusha` bin Nun and a believer from the family of Fir`awn, and Musa, peace be upon him, was in the rear.
More than one of the scholars of Tafsir said that they stood there not knowing what to do, and Yusha` bin Nun or the believer from the family of Fir`awn said to Musa, peace be upon him, "O Prophet of Allah, is it here that your Lord commanded you to bring us" He said: "Yes." Then Fir`awn and his troops drew near and were very close indeed.
At that point Allah commanded his Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, to strike the sea with his staff, so he struck it, and it parted, by the will of Allah.
Allah says:
( And it parted, and each separate part became like huge mountain. ) meaning, like mighty mountains.
This was the view of Ibn Mas`ud, Ibn `Abbas, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah and others.
`Ata' Al-Khurasani said, "It refers to a pass between two mountains." Ibn `Abbas said, "The sea divided into twelve paths, one for each of the tribes." As-Suddi added, "And in it there were windows through which they could see one another, and the water was erected like walls." Allah sent the wind to the sea bed to make it solid like the land.
Allah says:
( and strike a dry path for them in the sea, fearing neither to be overtaken nor being afraid ) ( 20:77 ).
And here He says:
وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ الاٌّخَرِينَ
( Then We brought near the others to that place. ) Ibn `Abbas, `Ata' Al-Khurasani, Qatadah and As-Suddi said:
وَأَزْلَفْنَا
( Then We brought near ) means, "We brought Fir`awn and his troops near to the sea."
( And We saved Musa and all those with him.
Then We drowned the others. ) meaning: `We saved Musa and the Children of Israel and whoever followed their religion, and none of them were destroyed, but Fir`awn and his troops were drowned and not one of them remained alive, but was destroyed.' Then Allah says:
( Verily, in this is indeed a sign, ) meaning, this story with its wonders and tales of aid to the believing servants of Allah is definitive proof and evidence of Allah's wisdom.
( yet most of them are not believers.
And verily your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
) The explanation of this phrase has already been discussed above.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(26:63) We inspired Moses with the Command: "Smite the sea with your staff." The sea parted forthwith and its each part stood like a mighty mountain. *47
Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with meaning
*47) Literally, tawd is a high mountain.
It appears that as soon as Prophet Moses struck the sea with his staff, it tore the sea asunder and the waters stood like two mighty mountains on the sides and remained in that condition for so long that, on the one hand, the Israelite caravans consisting of hundreds of thousands of the nigrants were able to pass through safely, and on the other, Pharaoh and his hosts stepped in and reached the middle of the sea.
In the natural course, a phenomenon like this has never occurred that due to a windstorm, however strong, the sea should have parted and stood like mighty mountains on either side for such a long time.
According to verse 77 of Ta Ha, Prophet Moses was commanded by Allah " to make for them ( the Israelites ) a dry path across the sea.
" This shows that the smiting of the sea did not only result in dividing the waters into two parts, which stood like mighty mountains on either side, but it also created a dry path in between without any mud or slush.
In this connection, one should also consider verse 24 of Surah Dukhan, which says that after Moses had crossed the sea along with his people, he was commanded by Allah " to let the sea remain as it is because Pharaoh is to be drowned in it. " This implies that if after crossing the sea, Moses had again struck it with his staff, the two sides would have rejoined, but he was forbidden to do so.
Obviously, this was a miracle, and the view of those who try to interpret it as a natural phenomenon, is belied.

( Then We inspired Moses, saying: Smite the sea with thy staff. And ) when he hit it ( it parted ) into 12 roads, ( and each part ) and each road ( was as a mountain vast ) like a huge mountain.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
