Quran 9:65 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And if la-in the lām is for oaths you question them about their mockery of you and of the Qur’ān while they were journeying with you towards Tabūk assuredly they will say making excuses ‘We were only engaging in idle talk and jesting’ in conversation in order to pass the time of the road and we did not mean it. Say to them ‘Were you then mocking God and His signs and His Messenger?
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And if you should ask them O Muhammad after their real nature has been betrayed, as to why did they plunge into defaming religion and disobeying Allah and His Messenger and laugh them to scorn! They would insolently say: We always plunge into worldly ambition and like to turn matters into a joke. Say to them: Do you make Allah, His revelations and His Messenger the object of a joke and laugh them to scorn
Quran 9:65 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Hypocrites rely on False, Misguided Excuses
`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "During the battle of Tabuk, a man was sitting in a gathering and said, `I have never seen like these reciters of ours! They have the hungriest stomachs, the most lying tongues and are the most cowardice in battle.' A man in the Masjid said, `You lie.
You are a hypocrite, and I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
' This statement was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and also a part of the Qur'an was revealed about it."' `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "I have seen that man afterwards holding onto the shoulders of the Messenger's camel while stones were falling on him, declaring, `O Allah's Messenger! We were only engaged in idle talk and jesting,' while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reciting,
أَبِاللَّهِ وَءَايَـتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(9:65) If you question them ("What were you talking about?"), they will promptly answer, "We were merely jesting and making merry.' *73 Ask them, "What, then! were you mocking at Allah and His Revelations and His Messenger?
And if you ask them, they will meaning
*73) This refers to the hypocrites who used to make fun of the Holy Prophet and the true Muslims in their secret meetings when they were making preparations for the expedition to Tabuk.
In this way, they used to discourage those Muslims who sincerely and honestly intended to go forth for Jihad.
We learn many things in this connection from the traditions.
For instance, in one of their meetings, when the hypocrites were having a gossip, one of them remarked, " I say! Do you think that the Romans are no better than the Arabs ? You will see that in the near future these "brave" men will be bound with ropes. " Another responded to this, " What a fun it would be if after this each one of them is lashed with a hundred stripes ! " Still another, ridiculing the preparations by the Prophet for the expedition, remarked, " Look at this man, and his preparations ! He intends to go forth to conquer the forts in Syria and the Roman Empire. "

( And if thou ask them ) O Muhammad, about what they are laughing about ( they will say: We did but talk ) about the troop ( and jest ) and joke with each other. ( Say ) to them, O Muhammad: ( was it at Allah and His revelations ) the Qur’an ( and His Messenger that ye did scoff? )
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW) that you were mocking?"
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
