Quran 22:72 Surah Hajj ayat 72 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
22:72 And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, you recognize in the faces of those who disbelieve disapproval. They are almost on the verge of assaulting those who recite to them Our verses. Say, "Then shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that? [It is] the Fire which Allah has promised those who disbelieve, and wretched is the destination."

Quran 22:72 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And when Our signs in the Qur’ān are recited to them though they are clear manifest signs bayyinātin a circumstantial qualifier you perceive on the faces of those who disbelieve denial that is to say denial of these signs in other words you perceive the effect of such denial in the way of aversion and frowning. They would almost pounce upon those who recite Our signs to them that is they would almost fall upon them in assault. Say ‘Shall I inform you about something worse than that? something more repulsive to you than the Qur’ān that is being recited to you? It is The Fire! God has promised it to the disbelievers in that their journey’s end shall be to it. And it is an evil journey’s end!’
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And -to their misfortune- when Our revelations are recited to them and Our divine signs are presented, you instantly notice that their countenance speak a different language reflecting hatred, denial and disdain. They are almost ready to set upon with hostile action and words to injure and overthrow those who recite to them Our revelations, Say to them O Muhammad: -If these divine revelations are distasteful to you- shall I tell you of what shall be far worse and more distasteful to you ! it is Hell which Allah has promised to those infidels who denied Him, and how evil is the end for which they are destined
Quran 22:72 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Idolators' worship of others besides Allah and Their vehement rejection of the Ayat of Allah
Allah tells us that the idolators, in their ignorance and disbelief, worship besides Allah others which He has sent down no authority for, i.e., no proof or evidence for such behavior.
This is like the Ayah:
وَمَن يَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَـهَا ءَاخَرَ لاَ بُرْهَانَ لَهُ بِهِ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُ عِندَ رَبِّهِ إِنَّهُ لاَ يُفْلِحُ الْكَـفِرُونَ
( And whoever calls upon, besides Allah, any other god, of whom he has no proof; then his reckoning is only with his Lord.
Surely, the disbelievers will not be successful. ) 23:117 So Allah says here:
مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَـناً وَمَا لَيْسَ لَهُمْ بِهِ عِلْمٌ
( for which He has sent down no authority, and of which they have no knowledge; ) meaning, they have no knowledge in the subject that they fabricate lies about; it is only something which was handed down to them from their fathers and ancestors, with no evidence or proof, and its origins lie in that which the Shaytan beautified for them and made attractive to them.
Allah warned them:
( and for the wrongdoers there is no helper. ) meaning, no one to help them against Allah when He sends His punishment and torment upon them.
Then Allah says:
( And when Our clear Ayat are recited to them, ) means, when the Ayat of the Qur'an and clear evidence and proof for Tawhid of Allah are mentioned to them, and they are told that there is no god besides Allah and that the Messengers spoke the truth,
( They are nearly ready to attack with violence those who recite Our Ayat to them. ) then they nearly attack and do harm to those who bring proof to them from the Qur'an, and cause them harm using their tongues and hands.
( Say ) O Muhammad to these people,
( Shall I tell you of something worse than that The Fire which Allah has promised to those who disbelieved, ) The fire and wrath and torment of Allah are far worse than that with which you are trying to scare the believing close friends of Allah in this world.
The punishment in the Hereafter for these deeds of yours is worse than that what you claim you want to do to the believers.
( and worst indeed is that destination! ) how terrible is the Fire as a final destination and abode!
( Evil indeed it is as an abode and as a place to rest in.
) 25:66
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(22:72) And when Our clear Revelations are recited to them, you perceive signs of disdain in the faces of the disbelievers as though they were going to assault those who recite Our Revelations to them. Say to them, "May I inform you of a thing worse than this? *122 It is the Fire which Allah has promised for those who reject the Truth; and what an evil abode it is !"
And when Our verses are recited to meaning
*122) That is, "You will meet with a far worse state of anguish than that which you display against those who recite Divine Revelations to you.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( And when Our revelations ) i.e. the Qur’an ( are recited unto them ) expositing to them the commands and prohibitions, ( thou knowest ) O Muhammad ( the denial ) their hatred of the Qur’an ( in the faces of those who disbelieve ) in the Qur’an; ( they all but attack ) they are about to beat up and fall on ( those who recite Our revelations ) the Qur’an ( unto them. Say ) O Muhammad, to the people of Mecca: ( Shall I proclaim unto you worse than that ) worse than what you told the Muslims in the life of this world? They said to them: " We have seen no adherents of any religion who are less fortunate than you ". And so Allah said: Say, O Muhammad Allah said: what is worse is ( The Fire! Allah hath promised it for the ones who disbelieve ) in Muhammad ( pbuh ) and in the Qur’an; and you are indeed disbelievers in Muhammad and the Qur’an. ( A hapless journey’s end ) to which they will come!
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them, you will notice a denial on the faces of the disbelievers! They are nearly ready to attack with violence those who recite Our Verses to them.
