Quran 7:89 Surah Araf ayat 89 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
7:89 We would have invented against Allah a lie if we returned to your religion after Allah had saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that Allah, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon Allah we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision."

Quran 7:89 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
We would be forging a lie against God if we were to return to your creed after God has delivered us from it. It is not right for us to return to it unless God our Lord wills that it be so and forsakes us. Our Lord embraces all things through His knowledge that is to say His knowledge embraces all things including my situation and yours. In God we have put our trust. Our Lord decide adjudicate between us and our people for You are the best of deciders’ adjudicators.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
If we should favour your system of faith and worship, said Shuaib, then we will have viciously and wrongfully related to Allah falsehood and denied His revelations and signs betokening Omnipotence and Authority. And how could we turn renegade after we have been graced by Allah Who has delivered us from such an evil system of faith bringing nothing but harm here and Hereafter! This shall never happen, he added, unless it be Allahs will that we be destined to lose our senses and be harmed by courage. Allahs knowledge encompasses the wide circle of the whole and of all in all and Omniscience is asserted as His own.. In Allah, our Creator, do we trust and to Him do we and our people plead our causes and He shall justly decide them. O Allah, our Creator, he prayed, You are the best and the most competent of all judges Who decide a case as put by opponent parties
Quran 7:89 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Allah describes the way the disbelievers answered His ProphetShu` ayb and those who believed in him, by threatening them withexpulsion from their village, or with forceful reversion to thedisbeliever's religion.
The chiefs spoke the words mentioned here to the Messenger Shu`ayb, but intended it for those who followed his religion too.
The statement,
( "Even though we hate it" ), means, would you force us to do that, even though we hate what you are calling us to Certainly if we revert to your religion and accept your ways, we will have uttered a tremendous lie against Allah by calling partners as rivals to Him,
( And it is not for us to return to it unless Allah, our Lord, should will. ) This part of the Ayah refers all matters to Allah's will, and certainly, He has perfect knowledge of all matters and His observation encompasses all things,
( In Allah (Alone ) we put our trust.
), concerning all our affairs, what we practice of them and what we ignore,
( Our Lord! Judge between us and our people in truth ) judge between us and our people and give us victory over them,
( for You are the best of those who give judgment ) and You are the Most Just Who never wrongs any in His judgment.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(7:89) If we return to your faith after Allah has delivered us from it we would be fabricating a lie against Allah. nor can we return to it again unless it be by, the will of Allah, our Lord. *73 Our Lord has knowledge of all things, and in Allah we put our trust. Our Lord! Judge rightly between us and our people, for You are the best of those who judge.'
We would have invented against Allah a meaning
*73).
This phrase signifies substantively what is meant by the commonly used Islamic formula In-sha' Allah ( 'If Allah so wills' ).
Its meaning is evident from al-Kahf 18: 23-4, in which the believers are directed not to make definitive statements about what they will do without making such actions contingent on God's will.
This is understandable since a believer firmly believes in God's power and is ever conscious that his destiny is inalienably tied to God's will.
It is impossible for such a person to make foolish statements about what he will do and what he will not do.
He is bound to make it clear that he will accomplish what he intends only, if 'God so wills'.
Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi

( We should have invented a lie ) falsehood ( against Allah if we returned to your religion after Allah hath rescued us from it ) from your religion. ( It is not for us ) it is not permissible for us ( to return to it ) to embrace your religion: associating others with Allah ( unless Allah should (so ) will) unless Allah takes away the knowledge from our hearts. ( Our Lord comprehendeth all things in knowledge ) our Lord knows everything. ( In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord! ) O our Lord! ( Decide with truth ) with justice ( between us and our folk, for Thou art the best of those who make decision ) the best of judges.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
"We should have invented a lie against Allah if we returned to your religion, after Allah has rescued us from it. And it is not for us to return to it unless Allah, our Lord, should will. Our Lord comprehends all things in His Knowledge. In Allah (Alone) we put our trust. Our Lord! Judge between us and our people in truth, for You are the Best of those who give judgment."
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
