Poetry and Poets (Al-Shi'r wa Al-Shu'ara') in the Holy Quran

﴿بَلۡ قَالُوٓاْ أَضۡغَٰثُ أَحۡلَٰمِۭ بَلِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ بَلۡ هُوَ شَاعِرٞ فَلۡيَأۡتِنَا بِـَٔايَةٖ كَمَآ أُرۡسِلَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ﴾ [Al-Anbiyā’: 5]

(5) But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."

Surah: Al-Anbiyā’ - Verse: 5 - Juz: 17 - Page: 322

﴿ وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ * أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِي كُلِّ وَادٖ يَهِيمُونَ * وَأَنَّهُمۡ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفۡعَلُونَ * إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَذَكَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا وَٱنتَصَرُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُواْۗ وَسَيَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓاْ أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٖ يَنقَلِبُونَ ﴾ [Ash-Shu‘arā’: 224-227]

(224) And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;

(225) Do you not see that in every valley they roam

(226) And that they say what they do not do? -

(227) Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

Surah: Ash-Shu‘arā’ - Verse: 224-225-226-227 - Juz: 19 - Page: 376

﴿وَمَا عَلَّمۡنَٰهُ ٱلشِّعۡرَ وَمَا يَنۢبَغِي لَهُۥٓۚ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ وَقُرۡءَانٞ مُّبِينٞ ﴾ [Yā-Sīn: 69]

(69) And We did not give Prophet Muhammad, knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur'an

Surah: Yā-Sīn - Verse: 69 - Juz: 23 - Page: 444

﴿ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ * وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٖ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ﴾ [Aṣ-Ṣāffāt: 35-36]

(35) Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant

(36) And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

Surah: Aṣ-Ṣāffāt - Verse: 35-36 - Juz: 23 - Page: 447

﴿أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٞ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِۦ رَيۡبَ ٱلۡمَنُونِ ﴾ [Aṭ-Ṭūr: 30]

(30) Or do they say [of you], "A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time?"

Surah: Aṭ-Ṭūr - Verse: 30 - Juz: 27 - Page: 524

﴿وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرٖۚ قَلِيلٗا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُونَ ﴾ [Al-Ḥāqqah: 41]
