Tafsir Ibn Katheer in EnglishBut they turned away from thanking Allah and believing in His messengers, so I punished them by turning their favours into difficulties, then I sent upon them a strong flood which destroyed their damn and flooded their fields.
And I replaced their two pleasant gardens with two gardens which gave bitter fruit, and which contained fruitless tamarisk trees and a small amount of the lote tree ( sidr ).
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
But they turned away (from the obedience of Allah), so We sent against them Sail Al'Arim (flood released from the dam), and We converted their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and some few lotetrees.

We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
34:16 But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood translate in arabic
فأعرضوا فأرسلنا عليهم سيل العرم وبدلناهم بجنتيهم جنتين ذواتي أكل خمط وأثل وشيء من سدر قليل
سورة: سبأ - آية: ( 16 ) - جزء: ( 22 ) - صفحة: ( 430 )Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
But they declined to show appreciation of the condition of things and be sensible of Allahs grace, and furthermore they failed to impel themselves to the feeling of gratitude and gratefulness. By consequence, We sent against them torrential rain causing destruction of their dam, built to confine the water and to regulate its flow, and We replaced their fertile land and their orchards with gardens of bitter fruit, shrubs of small tamarisk trees and a few of the Lotus trees and other trees carrying berry- like drupe
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(34:16) But they turned away *28 and so We let loose upon them a devastating flood *29 that swept away the dams and replaced their gardens by two others bearing bitter fruits, tamarisks, and a few lote trees. *30
But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood meaning
*28) That is, "They adopted the way of disobedience and ingratitude instead of obedience and gratefulness."
*29) The word 'arim as used in sayl al- arim in the Text is derived from the South Arabic word ariman, which stands for a "dam". In the ancient inscriptions that have been unearthed in the ruins of the Yaman, this word has been commonly used in this meaning. For example, in an inscription dated 542 or 543 A.D., which Abraha, the Abyssinian governor of the Yaman, had got installed after the repairs to the great dam of Maa`rib, this word has been used repeatedly in the meaning of a dam. Therefore, sayl al- arim implies a flood that comes when a dam breaks.
*30) That is, "As a result of the flood that came after the dam burst, the whole land was laid waste. The canals which the Sabaeans had dug out by building dams between the mountains, were ruined and the irrigation system destroyed. Then the same land which had been like a garden before, became a jungle of wild growth and no eatable plants were left in it except the small plumlike fruit of the lote bushes."
But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood meaning in Urdu
مگر وہ منہ موڑ گئے آخرکار ہم نے اُن پر بند توڑ سیلاب بھیج دیا اور ان کے پچھلے دو باغوں کی جگہ دو اور باغ انہیں دیے جن میں کڑوے کسیلے پھل اور جھاؤ کے درخت تھے اور کچھ تھوڑی سی بیریاں
