﴿مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي اسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا فَلَمَّا أَضَاءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُ ذَهَبَ اللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ﴾
[ البقرة: 17]

English - Sahih International

2:17 Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
Abridged Explanation of the Quran

They are like someone who lights a fire, but when it has lit up what is around him, Allah takes away the light from the flames: leaving them in the darkness, unable to see.
Allah shows us what the hypocrites are like with two examples: one related to fire, and the other to water.
In the example related to fire, He compares them to someone who lights a fire to illuminate things, but when it is lit and he thinks he will benefit from its light, it goes out, smoldering and leaving him in the dark.
Such people then remain in the dark, unable to see anything or find a way.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it illuminated all around him, Allah removed their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".

2:17 Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when translate in arabic

مثلهم كمثل الذي استوقد نارا فلما أضاءت ما حوله ذهب الله بنورهم وتركهم في ظلمات لا يبصرون

سورة: البقرة - آية: ( 17 )  - جزء: ( 1 )  -  صفحة: ( 4 )

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Their example stands similitude exact of someone who has kindled a fire togive light to a body of companions and when the surroundings glowed with light, Allah extinguished their fire and their alacrity and quenched their light and cut them off illumination and enlightenment and left them in want of physical, spiritual and intellectual sight

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(2:17) Their condition may be described in a parable: a man kindled a fire and when it illuminated all around him, Allah took away the light from their eyes and left them in utter darkness, where they could not see anything. *16

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when meaning

*16). This means that two opposite effects emerged when a true servant of God radiated the light which made it possible to distinguish true from false and right from wrong, and made the straight way distinct from the ways of error. To those endowed with true perception, all truths became evident. But those who were almost blinded by the worship of their animal desires perceived nothing.
The expression, 'Allah took away the light of their perception' should not create the impression that these people were not responsible for their stumbling into darkness. Only those who do not seek the Truth, who prefer error to guidance and who are adamantly disinclined to pursue the Truth despite its luminosity, are deprived, by God, of the light of their perception. God simply enables such people to do what they wish.

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when meaning in Urdu

اِن کی مثال ایسی ہے جیسے ایک شخص نے آگ روشن کی اور جب اُس نے سارے ماحول کو روشن کر دیا تو اللہ نے اِن کا نور بصارت سلب کر لیا اور انہیں اس حال میں چھوڑ دیا کہ تاریکیوں میں انہیں کچھ نظر نہیں آتا
