surah Maidah aya 18 , English translation of the meaning Ayah.
5:18 But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the [final] destination.
Tafsir Ibn Katheer in EnglishBoth the Jews and the Christians claimed: ‘We are Allah’s children and loved ones’.
Say, O Messenger, in refutation of their claim: Why does Allah punish you for the sins you commit? If you were His loved ones, as you claim, He would not have punished you, by your being killed or disfigured in the world, and by means of the fire of Hell in the Afterlife, because He does not punish those He loves.
Instead, you are just like all other human beings.
If any of them do good, Allah will reward them with Paradise.
If any of them do evil, He will punish them in the fire of Hell.
Allah forgives whomever He wishes through His grace; and He punishes whomever He wishes through His justice.
The dominion of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is in between them, is Allah’s alone.
To Him alone is the return.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And (both) the Jews and the Christians say: "We are the children of Allah and His loved ones." Say: "Why then does He punish you for your sins?" Nay, you are but human beings, of those He has created, He forgives whom He wills and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and to Him is the return (of all).

Nay, ye are but men,- of the men he hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and He punisheth whom He pleaseth: and to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between: and unto Him is the final goal (of all)"

The Jews and the Christians say: We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones. Say to them Muhammad: Why then does He punish you and afflict you with pain and suffering in requital for your evil deeds! Indeed you are but creatures constituting a part of those He brought into being and caused to exist. He forgives whom He will and torments whom He will. To Him alone belong all that is in the heavens and on earth and all in between. He is the end and the purpose for which all are destined
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(5:18) The Jews and the Christians say: 'We are Allah's children and His beloved ones.' Ask them: 'Why, then, does He chastise you for your sins?' You are the same as other men He has created. He forgives whom He wills and chastises whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them. To Him is the eventual return.
