English - Sahih International

6:1 [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
Abridged Explanation of the Quran

Only Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth from nothing, is described with perfection and praised with the noblest of qualities, and love is only due to Him.
He created the night and the day, which follow one another.
He created the night for darkness and the day for light.
Despite all this, some of His servants disbelieve Him and associate partners with Him.
Allah is far above what they say.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

All praises and thanks be to Allah, Who (Alone) created the heavens and the earth, and originated the darkness and the light, yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.

Praise be Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal, with their Guardian-Lord.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

All praise be to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and originated the darkness and the light, yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.

We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Praise is to Allah Who created the heavens and the earth and introduced darkness and light- both physical and spiritual-. Yet the infidels equalize Him with creatures of their fancy and incorporate them with Him as a corporate deity

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(6:1) All praise is for Allah alone, Who created the heavens and the earth, and brought into being light and darkness, and yet those who have rejected the call of the Truth ascribe others to be equals to their Lord. *1

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the meaning

*1). Remember that, although polytheists, the Arabs to whom these verses are addressed did acknowledge God as the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who causes day to alternate with night, and Who has brought into existence the sun and the moon. None of them attributed any of these acts to either al-LAt, al-Hubal, al-'UzzA or any other deities. Why, then,'should they prostrate themselves before others beside the Creator? Why should they offer their prayers and supplicatiom to any but God? (See Towards Understanding the Qur'an, vol. I, Surah 1, n.2, and Surah 2, n.163) The actual word that has been used in the original text for 'darkness' is in the plural. The contrast with the singular 'light' is significant: whereas light is one, there can be innumerable degrees of darkness, which is the absence of light.
