14:10 Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays your death for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority."

Quran 14:10 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Their messengers said ‘Can there be doubt concerning God an interrogative meant as a denial in other words there can be no doubt concerning His Oneness given the manifest proofs of it the Originator the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you to obedience of Him so that He might forgive you your sins min dhunūbikum min is extra since through submission to the One God all that may have been committed previously is forgiven or else it min ‘some of’ is partitive intended to state that forgiveness which is due to God’s servants and defer you without chastisement to an appointed term’ the term of death. They said ‘You are but mortals like us desiring to bar us from that which our fathers used to worship in the way of idols. So bring us a clear warrant’ a manifest argument demonstrating your truthfulness.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Their Messengers said to them: Do you people involve Allah in doubt when it is He who generated the heavens and the earth and brought them into existence and He invites you to His system of faith and worship so that you qualify to receive His blessings and the forgiveness of your sins! He grants you respite to confess yourselves mistaken and your punishment He puts in respite up to a predetermined point of time. They said: But you are simply mortals like us and you just want us to turn our backs upon the gods our fathers held in holy reverence and veneration! Give us then solid evidence that convinces our minds and tends to prove the conclusion

The Argument between the Prophets and the Disbelievers
Allah narrates to us the arguments that ensued between the disbelievers and their Messengers.
When their nations doubted the Message of worshipping Allah alone without partners, the Messengers said,
( (What! ) Can there be a doubt about Allah...) about His Lordship and having the exclusive right to be worshipped alone, being the only Creator of all creatures Verily, none besides Allah is worthy of worship, alone without partners with Him.
Most nations were, and still are, affirming the existence of the Creator, but they call upon intermediaries besides Him whom they think will benefit them or bring them closer to Allah.
Their Messengers said to them,
( He calls you that He may forgive you of your sins ) in the Hereafter,
( and give you respite for a term appointed. ), in this worldly life.
Allah said in other Ayat,
( Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace to every owner of grace. ) 10:3 However, their nations went on arguing against their prophethood, after they had to submit to the first evidence ( that Allah Alone created everything ).
Disbelievers reject Prophethood because the Messengers were Humans!
Their nations said,
( You are no more than human beings like us! ) so why should we follow you just because you say so, even though we did not witness a miracle by your hands,
( Then bring us a clear authority. ), a miracle of our choice.
( Their Messengers said to them: "We are no more than human beings like you..." ) affirming that truly, they were only human being like their nations,
( but Allah bestows His grace to whom He wills of His servants. ), with prophethood and messengership which is His choice,
( It is not ours to bring you an authority ) according to your choice,
( (except by the permission of Allah.
), after we beg Him and He provides us with a miracle,
( And in Allah (alone ) let the believers put their trust.) in all their affairs.
Their Messengers said to them next,
( And why should we not put our trust in Allah ), after He had guided us to the best, most clear and plain way,
( And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us ), such as foolish actions and abusive statements,
( and in Allah (alone ) let those who trust, put their trust.)
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(14:10) The Messengers said, "Do you have doubt about the existence of Allah. Who is the Creator of the heavens and the earth? *17 He calls you that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite till your appointed term. " *18
Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt meaning
*17) The Messengers posed this question to those who rejected the Message in order to bring home to them the absurdity of their stand with regard to God.
For though .
the mushriks of every age believed in the existence of God and acknowledged that He was the Creator of the heavens and the earth, they did not accept the Message, its logical result, that He alone was entitled to their worship.
That is why the Messengers.
asked them, " Do you have any doubt about the existence of Allah? "
*18) In the case of individuals, the `appointed term' may be either the time of one's death or the Doomsday.
As regards the `appointed term' for the rise and fall of communities, it is determined by their collective behaviour.
For instance, if a capable community degenerates before the expiry of its term, the assigned period is shortened and it is deposed.
On the other hand, if a degenerate community changes its ways for the better, its term is extended, So much so that it may extend even to the Doomsday.
This same thing is implied in v.
11 of Ar-R'ad:" ...The fact is that AIlah dces not change a people's lot unless they themselves change their own characteristics ..... "

( Their messengers said: Can there be doubt concerning Allah ) can there be any doubt regarding the divine Oneness of Allah, ( the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calleth you ) to repent and profess monotheism ( that He may forgive you your sins ) which you committed in the time of ignorance ( and reprieve you ) without any punishment ( unto an appointed term ) to an ordained time, i.e. to the time of death. ( They said ) to the messengers: ( Ye are but mortals ) human beings ( like us, who would fain turn us away from what our fathers used to worship ) of idols. ( Then bring some clear warrant ) an edict or proof.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Their Messengers said: "What! Can there be a doubt about Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
